Images of the destroyed pagers showed that they bore stickers from Taiwan-based Gold Apollo, Reuters reported. In a statement, Gold Apollo identified the other company as the Hungary-based BAC. Reached by phone on Wednesday, a spokesperson for Gold Apollo declined to comment further, citing the ongoing investigation. The explosions on Tuesday come amid rising concern that tensions between Israel and Lebanon could spiral into all-out war. Hsu of Gold Apollo said he also felt he had been victimized and was considering filing a lawsuit.

CNN —United Nations members voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to demand that Israel end its occupation of Palestinian territories within 12 months. Fourteen countries voted against, including the United States, Hungary, Israel, Argentina, Czechia, Fiji, Malawi, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Tonga, and Tuvalu. In its advisory opinion, the ICJ said Israel should end its occupation “as rapidly as possible.” The UN’s resolution gives a 12-month timeline. During the 1967 war, Israel captured the West Bank, East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and the Golan heights from neighboring Arab states. The Palestinians want the West Bank and Gaza for a future state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Thousands of pagers used by Hezbollah members around Lebanon simultaneously exploded on Tuesday evening, sending local emergency services into overdrive as hospitals filled up with wounded patients. Sulzberger, the New York Times publisher, sounded the alarm Thursday on the “quiet war” against press freedoms unleashed by authoritarians around the world and said Americans should understand the anti-media “playbook” that Donald Trump might employ in a second term. “The effectiveness of this playbook should not be underestimated,” Sulzberger wrote. “I believe the risk is shared by our entire profession, as well as all who depend on it,” he wrote. The collaboration makes a clear statement about the importance of solidarity in the face of existential threats to press freedom. “They’ve been a great partner on the cause of press freedom over many decades and it’s great to see that tradition continue.”

London CNN —Foreign automakers have dominated China’s car market for decades, selling millions of vehicles and raking in enormous profits. Ford (F) and General Motors (GM) are also among firms seeing sales and market share vanish in China as local consumers spurn overseas brands to buy Chinese instead. The American automaker’s sales in China have halved from a peak of above 4 million in 2017 to 2.1 million last year. Last year, BYD sold a record 3.02 million vehicles globally, including plug-in hybrids, up 62% from 2022. Months later, Stellantis (STLA), which makes Citroen, Fiat, and Peugeot cars, bought a 20% stake in Chinese EV maker Leapmotor for about €1.5 billion ($1.7 billion).

Protesters rallied outside Bulgaria’s parliament on Thursday to denounce a controversial legal amendment adopted the day before that bans talk of LGBTQ and so-called nontraditional sexual choices in schools. The amendment bans the “promotion, popularization and support of ideas and opinions related to non-traditional sexual orientation or sexual identification other than biological” in schools. Protesters rally outside Bulgaria's parliament on Thursday in Sofia, Bulgaria. Bulgaria has also declined to ratify the Istanbul Convention on preventing violence against women, because of widespread belief it means to promote LGBTQ rights. European rights groups, like the Belgium-based Forbidden Colors, condemned the legislation as an assault on the fundamental rights of LGBTQ individuals, particularly children.
