Fittingly for an Academy Awards celebrating 2023, the year of “Barbenheimer,” the movies that made up that phenomenon commanded our attention on Sunday night, too. The 96th Academy Awards are on Sunday, March 10. Some of the recipients of the most Oscars in history never set foot in front of the camera. But some of the winningest individuals in Oscars history actually made their impacts on film behind the scenes, designing costumes for "Roman Holiday," bringing dinosaurs to life in "Jurassic Park," and composing songs for "The Little Mermaid." While stars such as Streep, Frances McDormand, and Daniel Day-Lewis have won three acting Oscars each, some lesser-known names have won many more. In one of the most anticipated and surely one of the most exuberant moments of Oscar night, Ryan Gosling took the stage to perform “I’m Just Ken,” the nominated song from “Barbie” by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt. Wearing a sparkling pink suit and a cowboy hat, Gosling started out in the audience serenading his “Barbie” co-star Margot Robbie, who couldn’t contain her giggles. He then took the stage surrounded by an army of besuited Ken dancers, including fellow movie Kens Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa and Scott Evans. Mark Ronson joined him onstage but Slash of Guns N’ Roses did the true shredding, showing up midway through for a cameo. His early routines, including one in which he wears “Hammer pants,” have received tens of millions of views online.

ETImage “Barbie” is up for eight awards but is only the favorite for best original song. So while the Oscars have traditionally celebrated prestige films, Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster was undeniable, scoring eight Oscar nominations. Billie Eilish’s heart-wringing track “What Was I Made For?” won song of the year at the Grammys, and it is the front-runner in its Oscars category. And in 2003, Martin Scorsese’s “Gangs of New York” scored 10 nominations but no trophies. The best potential parallel to “Barbie” may be Bradley Cooper’s 2018 remake of “A Star Is Born,” which was nominated for eight Oscars and walked away with only best song.

Cillian Murphy Wins Best Actor Oscar for 'Oppenheimer'
  + stars: | 2024-03-10 | by ( March | At P.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +1 min
LOS ANGELES, March 10 (Reuters) - Cillian Murphy earned his first Academy Award for his portrayal in “Oppenheimer” of the physicist who led the United States’ development of the atomic bomb during World War Two. The win caps a successful awards season for the 47-year-old Irish actor, who also picked up a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and a Screen Actors Guild award for his performance. Murphy, who lives in Ireland and keeps a low profile in Hollywood, had his biggest role to date playing a tortured, morally ambiguous Oppenheimer. The movie – which, alongside Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” birthed the summer cinema phenomenon dubbed “Barbenheimer” – helped prop up a 2023 box office where well-established franchises fell flat. This is especially important for the company's Fisher-Price and American Girl brands, which have been in the midst of their own transformations for several years. CNN —If you drink every time someone mentions “Barbie” at this Sunday’s Oscars, you probably won’t be awake to see the best picture category presented, even with the show’s earlier start time. Yet while the year’s biggest box-office winner will get plenty of attention – due in part to its much-debated “snubs” – the 96th Academy Awards looks destined to be “Oppenheimer’s” night. While few superhero or genre movies have managed to break through (“Black Panther” being an exception), “Barbie’s” mix of stars and social commentary nabbed eight nominations, including best picture. The award-industrial complex’s fondness for smaller films, further fueled by their availability via streaming services, is evident in the other best picture contenders. Cillian Murphy accepts the Screen Actors Guild award for his starring role in "Oppenheimer," the heavy favorite on Oscar night.

When Greta Gerwig did not receive an Oscar nomination last month for best director for “Barbie,” despite the film’s nod for best picture and its status as a global box office phenomenon, the news revived scrutiny over gender diversity among the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ membership. The directors’ branch, which chooses the five nominees for that Oscar category, is 25 percent female. Over all, 34 percent of the academy’s more than 10,000 members are women. “The academy, like our industry, should reflect the world in which we live,” said David Heyman, a producer of “Barbie.” “The fact that it doesn’t is just wrong.”

“Frankly, I hate dialogue,” Villeneuve told The Times of London. I don’t remember movies because of a good line, I remember movies because of a strong image. This supposed truism is heard everywhere in the film world and even taught to film writers.
