London CNN —The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla held in May last year cost British taxpayers £72 million ($91 million), an amount some have labeled excessive. The £72 million spent on the coronation could have paid for 24 million free meals for schoolchildren in London, based on the city government’s current budget of £3.00 ($3.75) per meal. Some additional spending came from the Privy Purse, the monarch’s private source of income, a royal source told CNN. “Plans (for the coronation) were scaled back,” the royal source told CNN. The culture department, in its accounts, said it had underspent its budget on the coronation by £2.8 million ($3.5 million).

They see me as a threat to their power.”The episode has raised eyebrows among security officials, who point to Gabbard’s history of unusual relationships overseas. The circumstances that led to Gabbard’s inclusion on Quiet Skies may be entirely benign, these sources said. Under normal circumstances, one official said, Gabbard would be forced to explain the underlying foreign travel or contacts in question during her background check. Security officials from multiple agencies told CNN that the program is known inside the government for having far laxer standards for inclusion. “TSA’s Quiet Skies program is a risk-based, automated approach to transportation security, to include identifying potential risks and applying enhanced security measures.”The statement continued: “TSA’s Quiet Skies program is not a terrorist watchlist.

While Anthropic and OpenAI continue to raise significant sums, some smaller companies have essentially been folded into Google and Microsoft. U.S. regulators are also scrutinizing the multibillion-dollar investments that Microsoft, Amazon and Google are putting into A.I. But the deals are seen as allowing the big companies to form deep ties with their smaller rivals while avoiding most government scrutiny. It is very unusual for Chinese businesspeople to take public aim at the government and those who have done so have often faced repercussions. In particular, Pinduoduo’s pricing system has done great harm to China’s brands and its industries,” he was quoted as saying by state-owned media outlet The Paper. In further remarks from the same press conference that were not widely reported by state media, Zhong singled out the Chinese government for not doing more to stop the trend. M. Jodi Rell, who was the first (and, to date, only) Republican woman to serve as governor of Connecticut, beginning her seven years in office when the incumbent resigned in a corruption scandal, died on Wednesday in Florida. Her family, providing no other details, said she died in a hospital after a brief illness. Mrs. Rell had been the state’s lieutenant governor for more than nine years when, in July 2004, she began completing the term of Gov. Known as a moderate Republican, Mrs. Rell sought bipartisan compromise — a goal that became more important to her, she said, when, five months after becoming governor, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. She returned to her office in the Capitol in Hartford nine days later.

The role requires Senate confirmation unless Mr. Trump is able to make recess appointments. The choice of Mr. Vought would bring in a strongly ideological figure who played a pivotal role in Mr. Trump’s first term, when he also served as budget chief. Among other things, Mr. Vought helped come up with the idea of having Mr. Trump use emergency power to circumvent Congress’s decision about how much to spend on a border wall. Mr. Vought was a leading figure in Project 2025, the effort by conservative organizations to build a governing blueprint for Mr. Trump should he take office once again. Mr. Trump tried to distance himself from the effort during his campaign, but he has put forward people with ties to the project for his administration since the election.

Reuters —The Nicaraguan parliament, dominated by the ruling Sandinista Front, on Friday approved a constitutional reform that hands more power to President Daniel Ortega as well as the Central American nation’s police and military. The two have been married since 2005 and she was made vice president in 2017. Under the new reform, the co-presidents will have control over the legislature, judiciary and electoral, public administration, and oversight bodies as well as autonomous entities. Government critics have said the reforms legalize the “absolute power” already exercised for years by Ortega and Murillo. “If adopted, these changes will sound the death knell for fundamental freedoms and rule of law in Nicaragua,” he said in a statement.

CNN —Venezuelan authorities are investigating opposition leader Maria Corina Machado for alleged treason after she expressed support for a US bipartisan bill that seeks to block Washington from doing business with any entity that has commercial ties with the government of Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro. The US bill – introduced by Florida Reps. Mike Waltz (R) and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) – was passed on Monday by the House of Representatives. During a televised event on Wednesday, Maduro criticized the bill and said that the opposition’s actions against him will not be successful. Even after Venezuela’s electoral and judicial authorities announced Maduro’s victory, they have not shown detailed results and electoral records to support it, prompting anger and concern across the country and abroad. Several countries, including the US, have formally recognized Gonzalez as the country’s president-elect following the disputed election.

Pam Bondi, who Donald Trump tapped last night for attorney general after former Representative Matt Gaetz dropped his bid, is arriving on the national stage with a smaller profile and less political baggage than Gaetz. Bondi began working as an assistant state attorney in the Tampa area in the 1990s, before becoming Florida’s first female attorney general in 2011. Like Gaetz, Bondi is a Trump loyalist. She served on Trump’s legal team during his first impeachment and oversaw the filing of voting-related lawsuits in battleground states. New York City’s congestion pricing program has cleared its last bureaucratic hurdle, and most drivers could soon be paying $9 to enter the busiest parts of Manhattan. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs the city’s mass transit network and will oversee the pricing plan, has been granted permission by the Federal Highway Administration to proceed with the tolls as planned, according to M.T.A. Congestion pricing would charge most motorists $9 to enter Manhattan below 60th Street during peak hours, down from the previously approved rate of $15. Although it has received final government approval, congestion pricing could still be undone, even after its start date. President-elect Donald J. Trump has also threatened to stop congestion pricing as one of his first acts in office.

The Indonesian government expects Apple to increase its proposed $100 million investment into the country, according to state media, as the iPhone maker seeks clearance from Jakarta to sell its latest phones. According to a report from Indonesian state media, the country's Ministry of Industry met with representatives from Apple on Thursday regarding its proposal to invest $100 million over two years. "From the government's perspective, of course, we want this investment to be larger," industry ministry spokesperson Febri Hendri Antoni Arif told state media on Thursday. While Indonesia represents a small market for Apple, it also offers growth opportunities as it has the world's fourth-largest population, according to Le Xuan Chiew, a Canalys analyst focusing on Apple strategy research. Success in this market requires a long-term approach, and Apple's investment offer demonstrates a commitment to complying with local regulations and paving the way for future growth, he added.

Why the U.S. is growing less food

Fruit production is down nearly 36% in 2024 from 2003, while vegetable production is down 6.3%, according to the USDA. Imports make up a growing share of fresh produce availability, with 60% of the total fruits and 38% of vegetables in the U.S. supplied by other countries in 2021, with Mexico as the largest supplier. The U.S. prioritizes growing commodities — like corn, soybeans, wheat and sugar. And that's a big sticking point for many small to midsize farmers growing fruits and vegetables. The 2018 farm bill extended into 2024 but expired in September.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Friday stepped into a major legal fight over the $8 billion a year the federal government spends to subsidize phone and internet services in schools, libraries and rural areas, in a new test of federal regulatory power. The justices had previously denied two appeals from Consumer Research after federal appeals courts upheld the program. Circuit Court of Appeals, among the nation’s most conservative, ruled 9-7 that the method of funding is unconstitutional. The last time the Supreme Court invoked what is known as the non-delegation doctrine to strike down a federal law was in 1935. But several conservative justices have suggested they are open to breathing new life into the legal doctrine.
