Some young investors are using astrology and tarot cards to guide day trading decisions. They believe stock market behavior aligns with cyclical patterns of planets and the moon. Gen Z sees astrology as a form of inner clarity, akin to religion, amid shifting identities. The idea is that everything — from the whims of the stock market to the rotation of the planets — is cyclical. The New York Fed’s May Survey of Consumer Expectations showed improvement of people’s perceptions of their current financial situation as well as their outlook for a year from now. Households’ expectations for highest US stock prices improved to a three-year high. In May, home price expectations were still high, unchanged from the month before; however, inflation expectations dipped — and that’s a good sign for the Federal Reserve. Monday’s survey showed that the three- and five-year inflation expectations were unchanged. When the April CPI showed inflation on a cooler trajectory than it had started the year, the major US stock indexes all surged to record highs.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Friday named packaged food stocks that might be good additions to portfolios, especially if the economy is headed for a slowdown. "For example, the packaged food plays." According to Cramer, Campbell Soup reported solid earnings but weaker guidance, due in part to its pricey acquisition of pasta sauce maker Sovos Brands. He stressed that the whole packaged food group usually does well in a slowdown and suggested also looking into Tyson Foods , Hormel , General Mills , Conagra and Kellanova . "Ultimately, I feel incrementally more positive on the packaged food space after hearing from Campbell's and Smucker," he Cramer said.

Ernie Barnes Paints What It Feels Like to Move

The second thing you notice about an Ernie Barnes painting might be its vibrant color scheme. Anchored in earthy reds and browns, it perfectly complements the artist’s virtuosic, almost musical mastery of space and composition. Or it could be the overflowing warmth with which he depicts Black American life that catches your eye. You may also have encountered one of the thousands of posters and prints which, throughout his career, he made available at modest prices. The first thing you notice about an Ernie Barnes painting will be the distinctively sinuous way he renders human beings.

Analysts are expecting the Memorial Day weekend to usher in yet another summer of strong consumer spending on travel and other leisure activities. “We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” Paula Twidale, senior vice president at AAA Travel, said in a release. Spending this summer will likely be a little softer than last year’s, they said, but still strong. The bank’s consumer travel survey showed that 72% of people said they’re planning to travel, with 36% saying they’ve already planned their trip. Even among respondents making less than $75,000 a year, more than 60% said they’re planning to travel this summer.

The Dow just hit 40,000. Here's a look at how it got here
  + stars: | 2024-05-16 | by ( Fred Imbert | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
The Dow first closed above 20,000 in early 2017, as investors began pricing in lower corporate taxes in the U.S. under former President Donald Trump. However, the Dow struggled in 2018 after the excitement around lower taxes faded, with trade tensions between China and the U.S. rising and the Federal Reserve raising interest rates. In 2019, the stock market recovered as the Fed pivoted away from raising rates. By early 2020, the Dow was nearing 30,000 — reaching a high of 29,551.42 on Feb. 12, 2020. The Dow tumbled 38% from its February 2020 intraday peak to a low of 18,213.65 in March 2020.

While Red Lobster increased traffic somewhat, people coming in to chow down on all-you-can-eat shrimp was a money bleeder. But the story about what's gone wrong with Red Lobster is much more complicated than a bunch of stoners pigging out on shrimp (and, later, lobster) en masse. Red Lobster first opened in Lakeland, Florida, in 1968 and was acquired by the food conglomerate General Mills in 1970. CNN —Taylor Swift released “The Tortured Poets Department” on Friday, a 31-track surprise double album, and she’s clearly in an emotionally evolved era. Either way, as the title suggests in this song, she’s determined to get him back. ‘I Hate it Here’“This place made me feel worthless,” Swift sings. CNN —One thing about Taylor Swift is she will rip her own heart open and spill the blood in the form of her song lyrics. Welcome to “The Tortured Poets Department.” Her latest music continues Swift’s tradition of sharing insight about her feelings and relationships in her songs. Clues include the opening in which Swift sings, “You left your typewriter at my apartment.” Healy expressed a fondness for typewriters in a 2019 interview with GQ magazine. “So when I touch down/ Call the amateurs and cut ‘em from the team,” Swift sings. It all led to a whole “Taylor Swift is a snake” trend on social media, and Swift has talked about how she withdrew into herself during that time.
