The U.K. stock market is likely to rise over the course of 12 months, if the Bank of England cuts interest rates on Thursday and history repeats itself, according to a CNBC Pro analysis. Economists say the forecasts for whether the U.K. central bank will either reduce or hold rates are a close call. A decision to lower interest rates — which sit at at 5.25% currently — would mark the first time monetary police has been eased in Britain since the hiking cycle began in December 2021. The analysis found that, on three occasions the index had risen more than 20% on average within a year after an interest rate cut. For instance, the domestically focused index of 250 stocks rose by 17% across three months after the Bank of England cut rates in 1998.

"Each of these strengths contributed to a good revenue performance in the first half of 2024, supported by higher interest rates." Hong Kong-listed shares of HSBC were up 2.84% at 07:56 a.m. London time in the wake of the earnings beat. The first-half figure nevertheless came in well above the $20.5 billion average of broker estimates compiled by HSBC, according to Reuters. "The strong performance of the business gives us the confidence to say that we'll be mid-teens return in 2025 as well," Quinn told CNBC. Any September decision to lower the Fed's target range would be the first time interest rates have fallen since the hiking cycle began in March 2022. However, stocks fell soon after the rate cut in 2001 and 2007 by 13.5% and 20.6%, respectively, due to the dotcom crash and the global financial crisis. The current tightening episode is the seventh in the past 40 years. Historically, the Fed has cut rates because the U.S. economy was heading into a recession or experiencing a notable growth slowdown. While nominal rates peaked at 11.5% at the end of the 1983-84 episode, the current target range of 5.25%-5.50% is the highest this millennium.

AI models, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT or Anthropic's Claude, are built by running complex algorithms on large amounts of data. Barclays has identified a list of global stocks poised to benefit as central banks in Europe and the U.K. prepare to cut interest rates. The European Central Bank and the Bank of England are expected to continue, or begin, reducing interest rates in the second half of this year, continuing into 2025. Barclays economists project that by mid-2025, the ECB's key rate could reach 2.5%, while the Bank of England's rate might settle at 4%. Barclays included the following stocks in its "rate-cut winners basket", among which are: Cellnex Telecom, Royal KPN , Hermes , Zalando , and Siemens Healthineers . While banks are often thought to suffer from lower interest rates, Barclays suggests that any loss in earnings from lower rates could be partially offset by higher lending volumes and reduced provisions for bad loans.

Despite its progressive intentions, the tax failed to raise sufficient revenue for the monarch, as people boarded up their windows to lower their tax liability. Window tax was a property tax based on the number of windows in a house. In addition, the minister also lifted capital gains for stock market investors who cash in within a year from 15% to 20%. While the tax raises more than £3 billion ($3.9 billion) annually, it has given birth to far riskier forms of speculation while simultaneously hurting the stock market. However, given the lofty valuations that Indian stock markets currently trade, the tax to skim the excesses might be a positive development over the longer term.

As stocks pull back from all-time highs, a top Bank of America strategist warned investors to be cautious, citing a series of economic indicators that have historically signaled the end of a rally. "Historically, whenever the unemployment rate has started to rise, it has never gone down again. The unemployment rate unexpectedly climbed to 4.1% in June , tied for the highest level since October 2021. The strategist added that such conditions typically lead to higher risk premiums and lower asset prices, especially given the current elevated market levels. The Bank of America strategist also expressed concern about consumer confidence, which he described as "collapsing."

Shares of Nordea Bank , the Finnish lender, have been labeled "too cheap to ignore" by investment bank Berenberg. Net interest income – earned through the differences in rates offered to savers and borrowers — grew 7% year-on-year to 3.86 billion euros. "Trading on only 7.5x our [financial year] 2025 earnings — an 8% premium to the sector — we think Nordea is too cheap to ignore. However, the Berenberg analyst believes that Nordea's net interest income is relatively resilient, noting that "the market still underappreciates Nordea's [net interest income] stability, in our view, which contrasts favourably to that of more rate-sensitive Nordic peers." The analyst also said that recent challenges, including a slight miss on second-quarter net interest income expectations or a modest cost increase, should not deter investors.

Jefferies has identified a lesser-known and potentially undervalued Taiwanese company poised to benefit from the growing artificial intelligence sector. The investment bank said Insyde Software, listed on the Taipei Exchange, is well positioned to capitalize on the increasing demand for AI-enabled personal computers and servers. Jefferies initiated coverage of Insyde with a research note titled "Firmware Leader and Yet-to-be Discovered AI Play" on July 9 with a "Buy" rating and a price target that suggests a potential 42% upside from current levels. However, the stock has already risen by more than 30% since the ratings action, according to FactSet data, which shows the stock currently offers 17% upside potential. Founded in 1998, Insyde has established itself in the firmware industry, commanding over 50% market share in the personal computer segment, Jefferies suggests.

Citi has identified several undervalued global stocks exposed to artificial intelligence that present substantial investment opportunities. AI has driven approximately half the 11% return in the MSCI All Country World Index so far, according to Citi. The picture resembles the S & P 500 , where mega-cap stocks focused on AI have driven much of the rally. While many AI stocks have benefited from both expanding multiples and upward earnings revisions, Citi has identified a subset of 19 stocks that buck this trend. This dual tailwind of improving valuations and fundamentals has not been present in stocks with medium or low AI exposure — such as those in the table above.

Yet, the system has also exacerbated the social divide between the haves and have-nots, who are confined to the largely abysmal state-run education system. That means entrance tests and examinations are a high-stakes juncture in a person's life. A half-hearted attempt at testing the country's education system in 2021 was aborted when the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country. The company, which offers services ranging from online tutorials to offline coaching, attracted billions of dollars from investors worldwide during the pandemic when online education services were in high demand. One of the companies it bought was an offline test preparation service called Aakash Education Services, which is still expected to IPO this year.

Tesla shares saw more gains in premarket trading Wednesday, after jumping 10% in the previous session following the release of second-quarter vehicle production and deliveries figures that beat analyst expectations. Tesla's total deliveries hit 443,956 vehicles in the second quarter, with total production at 410,831 vehicles over the period. Analysts had expected that Tesla deliveries — the closest approximation of sales disclosed by the automaker — to reach 439,000 in the three-month stretch ending on June 30, according to a consensus of estimates compiled by FactSet StreetAccount. Global stocks ended the first half of 2024 up by more than 12%, and investors stand to make good money over the next six months if history repeats itself. Since the late 1980s, though, after a first-half rise of over 12%, stocks rose every single time in the second half of the year. The analysis also reveals that since 1970, the global stock market index had an average 21.25% price return for the whole year when the index was up more than 12% halfway through the year. The U.S.-only S & P 500 index has behaved in a very similar way to the MSCI World Index since 1989. The stock market had risen by more than 25% in the first half of that year.
