There were two requirements for the Stade de France track for the 2024 Paris Olympics: make it purple and make it fast. But Paris was fast: seven Olympic records and three track and field world records were set at the Games. Wilson later became the youngest male Olympic track and field gold medalist ever after the U.S. 4x400-meter relay team — made up of Chris Bailey, Vernon Norwood, Bryce Deadmon, and Rai Benjamin — won gold over Botswana on Saturday. “I was kind of in the moment because I’m watching a 16-year-old running the Olympics — Olympics history,” Norwood said. When Olympic Sponsors Go Rogue

When the French luxury goods conglomerate LVMH agreed to pay about $175 million to underwrite the organizing committee for the Paris Olympics, the company, owned by France’s richest person, Bernard Arnault, asked for more than any previous sponsor had ever done. Organizers of the Games, desperate for that cash, appeared to have said yes at every turn. Made by the LVMH-owned jeweler Chaumet. But there was one secret that had been held back, Antoine Arnault, who is Bernard Arnault’s son and the family’s representative to the Olympics, told a gathering of well-heeled Parisians on the eve of the Games. Keep an eye out, he and other LVMH executives said, for “a big surprise” involving the company.

The so-talented-it-is-hard-to-comprehend US roster carved up Serbia, South Sudan and Puerto Rico in group play and then bulldozed Brazil in its quarterfinal matchup. Having already beaten Serbia twice in the last few weeks and looking unstoppable, Team USA went into Thursday’s game against the European nation expecting another romp. “I remember, like it’s today, like it was yesterday, dreaming about seeing myself playing in the final at home in the Olympics. “That’s going to be the most-watched game, I feel like, since I’ve been playing in FIBA. Despite looking in sync throughout the group stage and against Brazil, there were signs of chemistry issues in pre-Olympics exhibitions and during the game against Serbia.

DETROIT — Automaker Stellantis plans to indefinitely lay off up to 2,450 U.S. factory workers later this year as it discontinues production of an older version of its Ram 1500 pickup truck in Michigan. It is produced alongside the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant, located near Detroit. The current Ram 1500, which was recently updated for the 2025 model year, is produced at a nearby plant. “With the introduction of the new Ram 1500, production of the Ram 1500 Classic at the Warren [Michigan] Truck Assembly Plant will come to an end later this year,” the company said in an emailed statement. On Friday, breaking makes its Olympics debut at the Place de la Concorde in Paris. This form of dance, created by Black youths in the Bronx in the early 1970s, has traveled far from its birthplace. Support for hip-hop education in the States typically comes from nonprofit organizations, after-school programs and for-profit dance schools. Despite breaking’s American roots, it has never been institutionally supported in public schools as part of a coordinated national policy. The Lycée Turgot, a public high school housed in a majestic 19th-century building, has for the past seven years been home to France’s premier national hip-hop dance program.

Meanwhile, the yen strengthened 0.6% to 146 against the US dollar, after losing nearly 2% on Tuesday and Wednesday combined. But those fears, as well as a further jump in the value of the yen, are still haunting the market. The volatility in the yen, which was at the heart of recent market turmoil, remains elevated, he added. On Monday, the Nikkei plummeted by the most since 1987, sparking a broader global market sell-off. The narrowing of the interest rate differentials, which had enabled the yen carry trade, could push the yen higher, Kuptiskevich added.

Now, a team of engineers and geologists brings a new theory to the table — a hydraulic lift device that would have floated the heavy stones up through the middle of Egypt’s oldest pyramid using stored water. Water from ancient streams flowed into a system of trenches and tunnels that surrounded the Step Pyramid, according to the study team. The shaft within the Step Pyramid is connected to a 200-meter-long (656-foot-long) underground tunnel that connects to another vertical shaft outside the pyramid. Conversely, a moderate-sized hydraulic lift can raise 50 to 100 tons. “It doesn’t mean (the hydraulic lift device) wasn’t used,” she added.
