Ukraine's drone units are operating more like scrappy startups than traditional military units. AdvertisementSome of Ukraine's drone units are operating more like edgy tech start-ups than military units, as they continue to play an oversized role in the country's military defenses. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, drone pilots are now the deadliest soldiers on the modern battlefield. The Journal met with Clear Eyes, a drone battalion that started out as unpaid civilian enthusiasts relying on commercial drones to track Russian military movements. Dakhno is now a drone pilot who claims to have killed about 300 Russian soldiers in a year and a half, and to have once flown a drone with a 9-pound bomb into a school auditorium where Russian soldiers were sheltering.

Sweden has dropped plans for 13 wind farms in the Baltic Sea due to security concerns. Wind turbines could interfere with radar and slow Sweden's missile response, its army said. A recent study found that an additional minute could be added to the country's missile response time. Sweden, which joined NATO earlier this year, shares a coast on the Baltic Sea with Russia. The reaction time in the event of a missile attack could go from 2 minutes to 60 seconds with wind farms in the way.

CNN —The Mary Rose was a royal favorite when it first set sail as the flagship of King Henry VIII’s fleet in 1512. After the Mary Rose came to rest at the bottom of a strait in the English Channel, a layer of silt cloaked the ship and the hundreds of crew who died on board. Now, researchers are studying the objects and bones from the wreck to better understand who the men were and how they lived. Budget airlines like Spirit, Frontier, and Southwest are struggling to turn a profit. The still-in-service airlines Neeleman founded, like JetBlue Airways, Azul Brazilian Airlines, Canada's WestJet, and Breeze Airways, largely follow this idea. Some airlines have bought Airbus' new extra-long-haul A321XLR to replace their aging Boeing 757s. That's about 800 miles further than its predecessor and at least 880 miles further than its closest competitor: the aging, out-of-production Boeing 757. Carriers like United Airlines and Icelandair are lining up for the new jet, putting in more than 550 orders so far. Continental Airlines, now United Airlines, switched its 757-300 order to the newer 737-800 in 2003, for example. Hong Kong CNN —China appears to have built a new and unusual aircraft carrier, intriguing experts with a potentially first-of-its-kind vessel that could further increase Beijing’s rapidly expanding maritime power. This potential new aircraft carrier “is of a somewhat unusual shape and size – much smaller than China’s previous naval aircraft carriers,” said Thomas Shugart, a former US Navy submarine commander and now a fellow at the Center for a New American Security. Another view of the satellite imagery captured on October 23, 2024, showing a potentially new class of a Chinese aircraft carrier at a shipyard in the southeastern end of the country. Only the United States Navy operates aircraft carriers bigger than the Fujian. Conducted in the South China Sea, the exercise was “aiming to enhance the integrated combat capability of the aircraft carrier formations” and was “part of the Liaoning aircraft carrier formation’s regular real-combat training in the high seas,” Xinhua said.

The Mary Rose was one of the largest warships of the Tudor navy during King Henry VIII’s reign until it sank on July 19, 1545, during a battle against the French. The Mary Rose was one of them, and the flagship became the king’s favorite. The hull of the Mary Rose, supported by a steel cradle attached to a lifting frame, was raised on October 11, 1982. The research team used Raman spectroscopy, a nondestructive method that preserves valuable samples, to study the bones, Shankland said. “Investigating the impact of this on the spine would further our understanding of bone chemistry changes with age, but also with stress from activity.”
