Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a rally at Madison Square Garden, in New York, U.S., October 27, 2024. Andrew Kelly | ReutersRepublican presidential candidate Donald Trump headlined a rally at New York's Madison Square Garden on Sunday that began with a series of vulgar and racist remarks by allies of the former president. Danielle Alvarez, a senior adviser to the Trump campaign, told Reuters that the joke about Puerto Rico "does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign." Harris's campaign in an email said the Madison Square Garden rally was "mirroring the same dangerously divisive and demeaning message" as Trump. Trump's 2016 presidential opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton, has accused him of "re-enacting" a pro-Nazi rally that was held at Madison Square Garden in 1939 on the eve of World War Two.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have laid out a broad array of ideas aimed at making life more affordable and strengthening the economy, which rank at the top of voters’ concerns. Both Trump and Harris have rolled out pricey provisions without specifying how they would cover the cost. Though his campaign hasn’t released details on the proposal, Trump has indicated that he would eliminate both federal income taxes and payroll taxes, which fund Social Security and Medicare. Around half of beneficiaries – mainly those with higher incomes – pay federal income tax on their Social Security payments. Harris’ plan would also accelerate the speed of Medicare’s drug price negotiations so that the costs of more medications come down faster.

Expectations of a Fed rate cut caused mortgage rates to drop to a two-year low of 6.08% in late September, but it failed to spur homebuying activity. Every percentage point on a mortgage rate makes a big difference for that monthly payment. Here’s what’s driving the recent upswing in mortgage rates. Mortgage rates track the 10-year US Treasury yield, which was expected to fall in anticipation of further rate cuts. “I am clearly not going to own any fixed income.”The government’s fiscal situation might already be having an impact on mortgage rates.

Trump's proposals would dramatically worsen Social Security's finances, a nonpartisan budget group is warning. The group predicts Trump's agenda would push up Social Security insolvency by 3 years. "We find President Trump's campaign proposals would dramatically worsen Social Security's finances," the CRFB budget group said in a blog post. Social Security trust funds are set to be exhausted by Fiscal Year 2034, according to the Congressional Budget Office. They worry that the expanded tax credit would reduce incentives to find a job, hurting the economy. The child tax credit “is a costly transfer program for taxpayers with kids who do not need government handouts,” the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank, has said. In 2022, after one year, Congress allowed the expanded child tax credit to expire. While it was in effect, the expanded child tax credit reduced child poverty in the U.S. by nearly half, studies have found. JD Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate, has said he favors expanding the child tax credit as well, though he is vague on details.

As more retirees start to claim Social Security, there are not enough workers contributing to the program to make up for that increase in benefit payments. But the trust fund Social Security relies on to pay retirement benefits is projected to be depleted in 2033. watch nowBoth presidential candidates — former president Trump and Vice President Harris — have vowed to protect Social Security benefits. "Seniors should not pay tax on Social Security," Trump wrote on July 31 in all capital letters on social media platform Truth Social. How Trump’s tariffs would work
  + stars: | 2024-10-13 | by ( Katie Lobosco | Annette Choi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
Study after study, including one from the federal government’s bipartisan US International Trade Commission, has found that Americans have borne almost the entire cost of Trump’s tariffs on Chinese products. When Trump was in office, he implemented tariffs on about $380 billion worth of goods imported into the US, according to a Tax Foundation analysis. The Trump tariffs also hit foreign steel, aluminum, washing machines and solar panels. But even if Trump implements tariffs on all US imports, the resulting revenue is unlikely to cover all these costs. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget recently estimated that Trump’s tariff plan would not generate enough revenue to pay for his other spending proposals.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump unveiled yet another set of targeted tax break proposals on Thursday, doling out more promises of relief as Election Day draws ever closer. Speaking before the Detroit Economic Club on Thursday, Trump promised to make the interest paid on car loans fully tax deductible, similar to the popular existing deduction for mortgage interest. They raped our country.”One tax expert questioned why Trump would limit the benefit just to car loans. “Once and for all, I’m going to end double taxation on our overseas citizens,” he said in a video released Thursday. Currently, some Americans living abroad must pay taxes to both the United States and to the country where they reside.

The relationship between Trump and Putin has long been a source of controversy. AdvertisementWith only a month to go before the presidential election, Donald Trump's relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin has once again come under the spotlight. In a forthcoming book, journalist Bob Woodward says that the former president and Putin have a closer friendship than previously known. The Ukraine war has already roiled markets for food, oil, gas, and other products, and wider conflict could have an even more devastating impact. If Russian President Vladimir Putin is victorious in Ukraine, it may embolden Chinese leader Xi Jinping to invade Taiwan.

Federal Debt and the Election

Likewise, the federal government will eventually face consequences for spending more money than it raises in taxes. Already, the costs of high federal debt are evident. About one-seventh of all federal spending this year will cover interest payments on debt the government previously accumulated. (Social Security remains almost twice as expensive as Medicare, the military or debt interest.) Over time, interest payments will account for an even larger share of the federal budget, leaving less money for everything else.

Harris’ plan would boost the debt by $3.5 trillion over the next decade, while Trump’s platform would cause it to spike by $7.5 trillion, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget’s report, released Monday. It found that Harris’ measures could have no significant impact on the debt or could increase it by $8.1 trillion. And Trump’s proposals could balloon the debt by between $1.5 trillion and $15.2 trillion. These proposals would cost $2.3 trillion in total. But the committee estimates these tariffs would bring in between $2 trillion and $4.3 trillion over a decade — not enough to cover Trump’s agenda.

Harris has proposed expanding the small business tax credit from $5,000 to $50,000. She even mentioned a key proposal in her opening answer at the presidential debate: expand the small business tax credit 10-fold, from $5,000 to $50,000. Theodos called small businesses "essential" for the US economy, and Buttle said they're a crucial source of innovation. The Pew Research study found 61% of small businesses are majority-owned by men and, as of 2021, 85% were majority-white owned. "We're talking about community businesses, micro-businesses, businesses where the founder doesn't have as much net worth," Theodos told BI.

But now, as the dangers of a widening deficit and mounting debt grow, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are making little effort to address it. A budget deficit occurs when a country’s spending exceeds what it collects in revenue, primarily through taxes. The deficit is expected to widen under the status quo and could get even worse under proposals by both Harris and Trump, if enacted. During the Trump-Harris presidential debate earlier this month, the budget deficit was mentioned just twice, when Harris jabbed Trump for his proposals, which are expected to add considerably more to the deficit than hers. In the 2021 fiscal year, during which Trump left office, the country ran a $2.8 trillion deficit.

BI broke down the pros, cons, and frequently asked questions about basic income. Universal basic income and guaranteed basic income could fill gaps in the existing US social safety net, experts said. A benefit of basic income is the element of choice, according to Shafeka Hashash, associate director of guaranteed income at the Economic Security Project. Private donors often fully or partially fund basic income programs, lessening the cost burden on local governments. That's 24% lower than the 11.6 trillion rubles it recorded in 2022, when revenues jumped due to oil price volatility. In 2021, Russia's oil and gas sales revenue stood at 9 trillion rubles. Trump’s promised business tax cuts come alongside his suite of targeted tax relief for individuals, a list that continues to grow. Trump used tariffs, in part, to help boost American manufacturing. Reducing the corporate tax rateTrump has long wanted to reduce the corporate tax rate to below 21%. WASHINGTON — As president, Donald Trump slashed a lucrative tax break enjoyed by coastal donors and suburban swing-state voters. What shifted more than the economy is Trump's needs, said Caroline Bruckner, managing director of American University's Kogod Tax Policy Center. The reversal is one of a flurry of freebies that Trump and his rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, are offering voters in the stretch run before Election Day. Trump’s proposal to repeal the SALT cap, which is set to expire next year if Congress takes no action, would reduce federal revenue by $1.2 trillion over a decade, according to CRFB’s estimate. But many voters in those counties would stand to benefit considerably from a repeal of the SALT cap.
