Chris Sununu on Friday blasted Rand Paul for launching a "Never Nikki" website to oppose former UN ambassador Nikki Haley's White House bid, arguing that "nobody cares" about the Kentucky senator's thoughts on the race. When the interviewer asked Sununu what Paul's opposition would mean for Haley's campaign, the governor said there wouldn't be any impact. Related stories"What does Rand Paul mean? Editor’s Note: John Avlon is a CNN senior political analyst and anchor. A truly stunning number of former Cabinet-level Trump administration officials are trying to warn Republican primary voters that their old boss’s reelection would be a disaster for our country. Share them with friends, family and neighbors who might be tempted to go along with the crowd and vote for Trump. But what about the Republican elected officials who have scrambled to endorse Trump before a single person has actually voted? So the voters of Iowa and New Hampshire have a disproportionate responsibility over the next few days.

Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney speaks during the Anti-Defamation League's "Never is Now" summit at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan in New York City, New York, U.S., November 10, 2022. In media interviews, Cheney said she was considering running for president next year as a third-party conservative candidate or on a bipartisan ticket that would include both a Republican and a Democrat. She cited Trump as a threat to democracy and the United States. She has kept her focus on the former president, echoing Biden in saying that another Trump presidency would threaten American democratic institutions. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has vowed to carry out reprisals against those he perceives to have wronged him if elected again.

CNN —Former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney said Tuesday that she’s committed to doing what’s necessary to stop former President Donald Trump from returning to the White House, as she continues to mull a third-party presidential run in 2024. Throughout her book, Cheney detailed how she saw her Republican colleagues fall in line to support his claims of election fraud following the 2020 election. In one instance, Cheney recalls GOP members reluctantly signing their names on electoral vote objection sheets for the states Republicans were contesting. Cheney has split with the Republican Party during previous elections. She also crossed party lines to stump for two moderate Democrats in competitive House races last year.

Cheney writes most members knew “it was a farce” and “another public display of fealty to Donald Trump.”“Among them was Republican Congressman Mark Green of Tennessee,” Cheney writes. “Leader McConnell, who had made a career out of savvy political calculation and behind-the-scenes maneuvering, got this one wrong,” Cheney writes. In the book, Cheney also condemns right-wing media for amplifying the disinformation coming from Trump and his allies. “Several months later, I heard the show had been in the final stages of production when it was shut down,” Cheney writes. Cheney writes that Pelosi’s team “pulled together a list of the 10 worst things I had ever said about her.

“For my young, healthy husband, that’s a different decision than for me when I am taking care of patients who are cancer survivors, and they trust me to be in their airway every day,” she told NBC News. “Giving people that autonomy is the most important part.”More recently, when asked if she recommended that others receive the vaccination, in accordance with C.D.C. guidance, she carefully sidestepped the question: “I recommend that people make their decisions based on the risks and benefits that have been published — and the risks and benefits should be investigated in a fair and balanced manner.” She later said that their children were not vaccinated against Covid-19. She also expressed disbelief at the strong reactions to Mr. Ramaswamy from some who might have been expected to share similar views. “What has been surprising is that people have, in the Republican Party themselves, had such an allergic reaction to someone who is an independent thinker, who actually represents a lot of what the Republican Party — in terms of the people who vote conservative — what we believe,” she said.

Opinion: Marjorie Taylor Greene botches the explanation

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. CNN —On the day after Republicans lost pivotal races in Kentucky, Ohio and Virginia last week, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene offered a diagnosis for her party’s ills. On Tuesday, Ohio voters passed an amendment to the state constitution that guarantees abortion rights. The disconnect may or may not cost Trump votes in 2024, but it’s hurting Republicans up and down the ballot. “Democrats will win in 2024 by making the election a choice, not just a referendum on Biden’s performance in office.

In business, that meant building a fortune by hyping a drug that ultimately failed. In politics, it means arguing he can return Trump's “America First” vision to the White House without the baggage. Ramaswamy majored in biology and participated in the campus Republican club, standing out even there as a libertarian. “I believe Donald Trump was an excellent president,” Ramaswamy said while campaigning in Atlanta. Vivek Ramaswamy, a brash multimillionaire former biotech executive, took a swipe at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over his cowboy boots, echoing speculation the shoes contain hidden lifts to boost his height. Five Republican candidates took part in Wednesday's debate. Trump allies have relentlessly hammered DeSantis over his cowboy boots, suggesting that DeSantis has hidden lifts inside them. DeSantis has said the boots are standard boots from Lucchese, a Texas-based western style shoe maker. Haley, who clashed with Ramaswamy several times during Wednesday's debate, corrected him, saying she actually wears five-inch heels.

“I’m sick of Republicans losing,” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said. DeSantis has long contrasted his successful re-election last year in Florida with Republican setbacks in the last few elections, including Trump’s loss in 2020. Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy blamed Ronna McDaniel, the chair of the Republican National Committee, instead of Trump, for the party’s recent performance. After circling each other for half the debate, they finally went on the attack over the other's dealings with China. The DeSantis campaign, meanwhile, has tried to attack Haley on that issue, accusing her of welcoming a Chinese company into her state.

Welcome to Opinion’s commentary for the third Republican presidential debate, held in Miami on Wednesday night. The debate didn’t answer the question of whether she can really cut into DeSantis’s more conservative bloc of support. He deserves praise for his substantive, competent answers, but there’s not much of a market for that in the Republican primaries. In a debate dominated by a neoconservative revival, Ramaswamy — in both style and substance — was the only Trumpist on the stage. primary voters relished his attacks on the Republican National Committee and the debate moderators.

Instead, they addressed terrorism and the Middle East conflict as well as domestic issues such as Social Security and abortion. On foreign policy, Haley offered an unapologetic and determined vision, saying America needs to stand by its ally Israel and support Ukraine. On Social Security, both Haley and Christie said the retirement age needed to be raised for younger workers, though neither would state a specific age. Christie also called for means-testing, saying rich people did not need Social Security as a safety net. "As governor of Florida, I know a few people on Social Security," DeSantis quipped.

Mel Sembler, a gregarious developer and major Republican fund-raiser whose largess was repaid with prize ambassadorships by two presidents, and who founded a controversy-courting “tough love” drug rehabilitation program, died on Oct. 31 at his home in St. Petersburg, Fla. Mr. Sembler, who developed more than 350 shopping centers and other retail projects in the Southeast, was a sought-after fund-raiser for Republicans, capable of shaking the money tree for $11 million at a single dinner. establishment who had an open lane to power in the era before the rise of Donald J. Trump. Mr. Sembler was candid about the role of money in politics. “Money gives you a voice,” he told The Tampa Bay Times in 2019.

When the Colorado Republican announced this past week that he would not seek reelection, he began with the type of criticism of Democratic policies that is standard fare for a hard-line conservative. Yet under political pressure in Colorado, Buck decided there was no way forward for him in Congress. Alone among Republicans, Buck said he was opposing Jordan because he had not clearly stated that Biden won the 2020 election. This past week, Trump called Buck a “weak and ineffective Super RINO,” or Republicans In Name Only. The next day, Buck testified about a legal effort in Colorado to ban Trump from the ballot under the Constitution’s “insurrection clause."

Last month, the Penn Wharton Budget Model from the University of Pennsylvania came out with an analysis of the debt crisis entitled “When Does Federal Debt Reach Unsustainable Levels?”Their answer? The concern is that punting the problem into the future, continuing to raise debt even as interest rates rise further or hold at higher levels for longer, the debt will grow even faster in a “snowball” scenario. Similar proposals have been offered over the years but at the same time they seem to lack political support – indeed, Republicans have recently voiced the idea of cutting Social Security. The debt crisis is rapidly worsening at a time when the bond market is having its own set of problems. A recent government auction of debt, an occurrence that is becoming more common as the U.S. borrows more, saw weak demand.

But the challenge facing Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee in Georgia is unlike any of the others. For one, he is the only judge so far to allow television cameras in the courtroom to broadcast hearings and any trials. And the trials will play out in a battleground state that Trump narrowly lost in 2020. But the experience of some judges who have been thrust into the public eye point to potential pitfalls and dangers ahead for the 34-year-old Georgia native. “Hopefully, you have a life outside the law,” Cahill said during his talk in Reno about handling high-profile cases.

Liz Cheney said politics are so broken that 'we're electing idiots'The former congresswoman also argued the GOP will crumble if Trump becomes its 2024 nominee. Cheney made it clear that amid talk of a potential third-party bid, she has absolutely no interest in doing "anything that could help Donald Trump." A daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, the former congresswoman thinks the party of Lincoln will crumble if the GOP renominates Trump as its presidential nominee. "We're at a moment in our country where there is a tectonic shift going on in our politics," Liz Cheney said. "And, I think in particular if the Republican Party — I'm not sure if it is salvageable now — if the Republican Party nominates Donald Trump it will shatter and we will have a whole new politics, as we should."

This reflects history, which shows that while being vice president often correlates with success in future presidential ambitions, it is far from a guarantee. Think about recent vice presidents who have tried to upgrade their positions. That doesn’t seem like a particularly high success rate, though we should remember that many vice presidents (like Cheney) don’t run. About 55% of vice presidents who ran for their party’s nomination became the head of their party’s ticket. The last time it happened was 1940, when President Franklin Roosevelt crushed his vice president, John Nance Garner.
