Wealthy investors and family offices shied away from stocks leading up to market swings this week, but many saw the drop in prices as an opportunity for tax savings and estate planning, according to wealth advisors. When stocks tumbled Monday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq down 3%, wealthy investors neither panicked nor jumped in to buy, according to several advisors. The drop in prices last Friday and Monday also offered a chance for wealthy investors to take advantage of tax benefits and gift strategies. With the gift and estate exemption amount scheduled to expire at the end of next year, many wealthy investors are working to give away the maximum before the expiration. “Most family offices are so invested in alternatives, hedge funds, PE and real estate, that they aren’t moving their investments around anyway,” said Geoffrey von Kuhn, an advisor to several of the nation’s largest family offices.

A survey of over 2,000 content creators conducted by the influencer marketing agency NeoReach last year found that 48% of creators earned less than $15,000 a year. Since the money that influencers make sometimes isn't enough to sustain their lifestyles, they balance content creation with other jobs. Most of these creators have smaller audiences, according to former influencer marketer Emmy Petit, who is now a full-time influencer. Southeast Asia's IPO market declined significantly in the first six months of 2024, with market capitalization plunging 71% to $5.8 billion, a report from Deloitte showed. There were no blockbuster IPOs from January to June, with only one large IPO with market capitalization of more than $1 billion and raising more than $200 million, Deloitte said. In the same period a year ago, there were three large IPOs which raised more than $600 million each. The downward trend signals "subdued IPO market sentiments where investors and IPO candidates continue to navigate macroeconomic factors," Deloitte said. Still, the report pointed out that historically, the latter half of the year "has always been the better performing half between 2020 to 2022."

Even as few as two hours daily on a device can cause eye problems, says Dr. Steven Reed, an optometrist and president of the AOA. Unmanaged screen use can lead to issues including dry eye, eye strain, back and neck pain, headaches, heavy eyelids, tearing and blurred vision. Modify brightness to a comfortable level depending on surrounding lighting and increase contrast on your device to reduce glare. Getting glasses that block blue light and reflective light, which are available for prescription and non-prescription lenses, can be an effective option for some people to prevent eye strain, too, eye doctors say. "If you're on your screen until bedtime and then you don't really sleep well, that impacts your overall health significantly," he says.
