Smoking was the leading risk factor by far, the study found, contributing to nearly 1 in 5 cancer cases and nearly a third of cancer deaths. Other key risk factors included excess body weight, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, diet and infections such as HPV. Overall, researchers analyzed 18 modifiable risk factors across 30 types of cancer. In 2019, these lifestyle factors were linked to more than 700,000 new cancer cases and more than 262,000 deaths, the study found. But modifiable risk factors contributed to more than half of new cases for 19 of the 30 types of cancer evaluated.

CNN —People taking tirzepatide injections lost more weight and were more likely to reach specific weight loss targets than those taking semaglutide, according to a new study. But 82% of people taking tirzepatide reached this important clinical benchmark, compared with about 67% of those taking semaglutide. Average weight loss was also consistently higher among those taking tirzepatide over time. And by one year, average weight loss was nearly double for those taking tirzepatide — more than 11%, compared with about 6% for those taking semaglutide. According to the new study, individuals with type 2 diabetes had less significant weight loss than those without a diagnosis — but average weight loss was still greater among those taking tirzepatide.

About 40% of new cancer diagnoses are associated with excess weight, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The risk was cut by more than half for gallbladder cancer, meningioma, pancreatic cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma, a kind of liver cancer. It was also significantly reduced for ovarian cancer, colorectal cancer, multiple myeloma, esophageal cancer, endometrial cancer and kidney cancer. And GLP-1 medications interact with systems related to insulin production.

Semaglutide prescriptions have soared in the US, which could raise the number of people at risk for a potential side effect. Unlike flu and RSV, Covid-19 is constantly circulating; it doesn’t offer a reprieve. The changes are meant to “simplify RSV vaccine decision-making for clinicians and the public,” the agency said.

In the study, published Monday in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics, researchers reviewed nearly 150 studies on the relationship between social media and the mental health of adolescents. For Murthy, the urgency of the youth mental health crisis is dominant — and there’s enough evidence to act now. “There are certain benefits, but getting some benefits does not justify forcing kids to endure significant harm.”Still, social media is not the same as cigarettes. “To be clear, a warning label would not, on its own, make social media safe for young people,” he wrote.

Florida will join Georgia and South Carolina with a six-week ban. The Tampa Bay Abortion Fund anticipates that at least 90% of people who call their hotline will be impacted by a six-week abortion ban and will need to seek abortion care outside of Florida. But the 3% drop between 2022 and 2023 brought the rate just below the previous low from 2020, which was 56 births for every 1,000 women of reproductive age. The birth rate fell among most age groups between 2022 and 2023, the new report shows. For older women, the option of waiting is not as viable.”Meanwhile, births continued to shift to older mothers. In South Carolina, there was a 70% decrease in abortions just one month after the state enforced a six-week limit. CNN —About 1 in every 10 people in the US who uses Adderall or similar combination drugs to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been affected by an ongoing shortage, a new analysis suggests. The US Food and Drug Administration announced that Adderall was in shortage in mid-October 2022, and the share of people with ADHD who filled their prescriptions for Adderall and related medications plunged in the following months. Patients were considered eligible for a monthly prescription fill if they had filled one within the previous two years. Prescriptions for medications used to treat ADHD surged during the Covid-19 pandemic, especially among young adults and women, one study found. But it’s been about a year and a half since she’s been able to fill her Adderall prescription in a “totally uneventful” way, she said.

Less than 20% of adults who do not identify as LGBT say they have experienced any of these same interactions. Consequences resulting from these negative health care experiences are also more than twice as common among LGBT adults. About a quarter of LGBT adults say they’ve had a recent health care experience that caused their health to get worse, compared with less than 10% of other adults, the survey found. LGBT adults are consistently more likely than non-LGBT adults to experience discrimination in their daily lives at least a few times a year across demographics. But among LGBT adults, negative experiences are more likely among those who are younger, women and have lower income.

Nearly two-thirds of all abortions in the US in 2023 – an estimated 642,700 – were medication abortions, the report says. Medication abortion, also known as medical abortion, is a method by which someone ends their pregnancy by taking two pills – mifepristone and misoprostol – rather than having a surgical procedure. Misoprostol can be used on its own for a medication abortion and is a safe alternative, but research suggests that using both pills together is the gold standard.

When it comes to “natural” causes of death such as medical conditions, however, the new study found that medication did not significantly affect mortality among ADHD patients. For these reasons, the link identified between treatment with medication and reduced mortality risk cannot be considered a direct cause-and-effect.

From January 2020 through August 2021, the risk of death for renters facing eviction was 2.6 times greater than it was in the general population, the study found. During the baseline period of 2010 to 2016, the mortality rate was 1.4 times higher for renters facing eviction than it was for the general population. Another study from December explored the risk between rising rent costs and mortality risk. Eviction filings were down 45% during the first two years of the pandemic, according to the new study.
