Can you can leave your estate to your pet?

CNN —Some people really do leave money to their pets. Estate attorneys told CNN they’re seeing more incidences of people making financial plans for their pets after they die. Twenty-nine states have enacted pet trust laws since 2008, and now every state, plus Washington, DC, has some form of guidelines, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. However, if a person names a guardian for their pet, they can leave money and property to that person. dpa/picture alliance/Eventpress/SipaFlorida attorney Peggy Hoyt, author of “All My Children Wear Fur Coats,” told CNN she urges her clients to leave comprehensive instructions for pet caretakers.

Thousands of striking Boeing workers on Monday were voting on a new labor deal that, if approved, would end a seven-week strike that analysts say is costing the company tens of millions of dollars each day. Roughly 33,000 machinists walked off the job in the Seattle and Portland, Ore., areas in September, stalling operations at factories where Boeing manufactures most of its commercial planes. In October, workers rejected a second tentative labor contract by a wide margin, just after the plane maker reported a $6.1 billion quarterly loss. Here’s what else to know about the latest developments in the company’s first strike since 2008:How many workers are on strike? The contract that spurred the ongoing strike covers about a fifth of the company’s employees.

US District Judge Lewis Kaplan scheduled the hearing after Ryan Salame, a former executive of Alameda Research and FTX Digital Markets, tried to withdraw his guilty plea. Salame said prosecutors broke a promise to him by later indicting his romantic partner, Michelle Bond — a claim that prosecutors vigorously disputed. Instead, Kaplan grilled Salame under oath for over 30 minutes in his Manhattan courtroom Thursday morning, accusing him of misrepresenting the plea negotiations. That left Kaplan in a bind: Either Salame lied in his plea hearing, throwing the plea into doubt. Bond would not be pursued if I plead guilty," Salame said.

The newly discovered fossils preserved 3D structures within the delicate wing bones, which typically are found flattened like pancakes within rock layers. CT scans of the fossils provided a rare glimpse inside the wing bones belonging to two species of pterosaurs, including one new to science. These are not unlike those found in the wing bones of modern birds that flap their wings to fly, Rosenbach said. In contrast, spiral ridges within Arambourgiania’s wing bones resembled the interiors of vulture wing bones, which are thought to resist the forces associated with soaring. “They represent the largest animals with the capacity to fly,” Rosenbach said of the extinct reptiles.

Nationwide, active listings in August were up 36% compared with the same month last year, according to a new report from Realtor.com. The growth in supply is due to the fact that homes are sitting on the market longer. “The widely anticipated Fed rate cut has already ushered in lower mortgage rates, but it seems that some buyers and sellers are waiting for additional declines.”That can be seen in weekly mortgage data. Regionally, active listings rose 46% in the South, 35.7% in the West, 23.8% in the Midwest and 15.1% in the Northeast. Part of that is due to the mix of homes on the market, as more smaller homes are being listed.

Wall Street is on edge heading into the July consumer price report after sharp stock swings this month reignited fears over the fate of the economy. Economists are predicting that inflation remained broadly unchanged in July — a reading that should allow the Federal Reserve to start easing the brakes on the economy next month by cutting interest rates. But a sharper-than-expected slowdown in the Consumer Price Index could intensify worries that the economy is moving quickly toward a more pronounced downturn, while a surprise acceleration is likely to rein in rate cut expectations that investors are already counting on to support the market. That leaves investors in search of an inflation “sweet spot,” Chris Larkin, head of trading and investing at E-Trade, said in a statement: “cool enough that no one will be second-guessing the likelihood of a September rate cut, but warm enough to push aside the recession concerns that have rattled the markets recently.”

Starbucks unveiled an abrupt leadership change on Tuesday: Brian Niccol, a high-profile name in the restaurant industry, is taking the reins, after months of weak sales at the coffee giant and a falling stock price. Mr. Niccol will step in as chief executive next month, replacing Laxman Narasimhan, whose relatively brief stint in the top job at Starbucks began in March last year. The company’s chief financial officer, Rachel Ruggeri, will serve as interim chief executive until Mr. Niccol officially joins the company on Sept. 9.
