In March, the Democratic governor announced a plan to gift several California cities hundreds of tiny homes by the fall to create space to help clear homeless encampments that have sprung up across the state’s major cities. More than 171,000 homeless people live in California, making up about 30% of the nation’s homeless population. The state has spent roughly $30 billion in the last few years to help them, with mixed results. Officials also pointed to a new law signed by Newsom in July to streamline construction of tiny homes. “It’s going to help thousands of people who are going to benefit because of the comprehensive nature of the approach here.”Sacramento and the state have also agreed to place the other 175 tiny homes at the California state fairgrounds.

The solution to keep prices under control seems fairly simple: Just build more housing. For a time, sprawl boosted housing supply and accommodated newcomers to the West: Nearly 60 million more people live in the region now compared with the 1950s. Running out of landWhen the economy crashed in 2008, housing construction screeched to a halt. All this red tape has caused a serious slowdown in much-needed housing construction. Build, build, buildDespite the unique challenges of building in the paradoxically wide-open West, some cities have been able to break through.

Almost invariably, the chatbot answers were rated as three or four times as reliable as the ones from the poor wee humans. But here's the most striking part: The chatbot answers, on average, were rated seven times as empathetic as the ones from humans. It's as if the unfeeling android Mr. Data figured out how to convincingly emulate Dr. Crusher's comforting bedside manner. Give those medical chatbots access to people's individual medical records, and they could offer more precisely directed advice. Healthcare AI startups will want the cheapest versions with the most financial bang, which won't necessarily have the best patient outcomes.

Mary Turner Pattiz, who as Mary Turner was a silky-voiced disc jockey at KMET, the album-oriented rock station that was the soundtrack of Southern California in the 1970s and early ’80s, before leaving radio to become an addiction counselor and philanthropist, died on May 9 at her home in Beverly Hills. The cause was cancer, said Ace Young, a former KMET news director. (When Jim Ladd, a late-night D.J., told his listeners to phone the White House to protest the practice, 5,000 callers jammed the White House switchboard.) When major bands came to town to perform or promote a new record, they made a stop at KMET to be interviewed by Ms. Pattiz. For his part, Mr. Springsteen was so taken with her that he asked her on a date, and at his performance at the Forum in Inglewood, Calif., the night after the interview, he dedicated the song “Promised Land” to her.

The team will share the new, 35,000-seat Snapdragon Stadium with an existing women's team, San Diego Wave of the National Women's Soccer League. "Sycuan has deep roots to the San Diego community," said Sycuan Tribal Chairman Cody Martinez. "Our MLS team will provide us with a great opportunity to bring together many different segments of the community." An international rock band’s first U.S. tour is a moment to be celebrated, a sign that years of hard work have paid off. “Then it really happened.”Forests and the Oklahoma band they were touring with, Ben Quad, are hardly the first musicians to be robbed while on tour in America. (In 1999, Sonic Youth famously lost an entire truck’s worth of gear to a thief, also in California.) But the experience was still a shock for a band from a country as safe as Singapore. “It was the worst luck ever,” said Chris Martinez, 29, a Forests fan from San Diego who discovered the band years ago on a business trip to Singapore.
Last year, on a spring evening, a 28-year-old man confronted a woman on a San Diego bus who was filming him with her cellphone, according to court documents. He grabbed the man, Anthony J. McGaff, 28, put him in a chokehold and held him for eight minutes, Mr. McGaff’s family said, until Mr. McGaff lost consciousness and died. Like the New York case, the victim in San Diego was Black and the man who killed him was white. A video captured by a subway rider shows Daniel Penny holding Mr. Neely in a chokehold for at least three minutes, including nearly a minute after he went limp. In San Diego, law enforcement officials arrested Mr. Hilbert within hours.
Over the past decade, they've grown their real estate portfolio to 47 units worth $19 million. Both had also had real estate ambitions prior to meeting. According to Simpson, the best way to source deals is also the most obvious — by having a good relationship with real estate brokers. If they intend to sell a property, Simpson and Moore generally only make improvements to between 60% to 65% of the units. In the future, the couple's long-term goals include continuing to grow their real estate portfolio, expanding their coaching business, and eventually handing their own investments full-time.
CNN —The US Coast Guard is suspending its search for three missing Americans last heard from on April 4 near Mazatlán, Mexico, according to a Coast Guard news release. The search was suspended “pending further developments” after Mexican Navy and US Coast Guard responders “conducted 281 cumulative search hours covering approximately 200,057 square nautical miles” with no sign of the missing vessel or passengers, the release said. Kerry O’Brien, Frank O’Brien and William Gross are all “experienced sailors,” according to an earlier joint statement from their families. “An exhaustive search was conducted by our international search and rescue partner, Mexico, with the U.S. Coast Guard and Canada providing additional search assets,” said Commander Gregory Higgins, command center chief of Coast Guard District 11. Winds potentially over 30 knots and seas 15 to 20, maybe more, feet at the time of their voyage,” Higgins told CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield on Saturday.
