Nvidia's blowout quarter was a positive signal for stocks, but maybe not at just this moment, some investors say. "We're bullish on the market, but more in the fourth quarter than the fall," said Infrastructure Capital Management CEO Jay Hatfield. The investor expects the S & P 500 will close the year up at 5,000, which is roughly 12% above where the index closed Wednesday. On Thursday, the major averages turned lower during midday trading after a boost from Nvidia earnings results faded . For the month of August, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S & P 500 are down by more than 3%, each.

CNBC Daily Open brings investors up to speed on everything they need to know, no matter where they are. Rather, it was "a pause that refreshes" — a healthy adjustment to "oversold market conditions," Stoltzfus wrote. "Fixed income just looks relatively attractive, especially [relative to] where [we] were just a couple of years ago," said Kevin Gordon, senior investment strategist at Charles Schwab . Whatever choice investors make, then, it's made under a backdrop of heathy conditions — something rare since the pandemic.

That's the reason Microsoft has disclosed how much of the expected Azure cloud growth will come from AI for the past two quarters, Nadella said. That could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars in new Azure AI revenue. "There are two parts to even the AI," Nadella said.

Stock futures held steady in overnight trading Monday after the market staged a relief rally on the hope that the banking turmoil would be contained. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq 100 futures were also little changed. Investors also welcomed news that JPMorgan Chase could be advising embattled First Republic Bank on strategic alternatives. First Republic Bank sold off another 47% during the session, extending its month-to-date decline to 90% as the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank made investors worried about other banks with large uninsured deposit bases. The SPDR Regional Banking ETF (KRE) rose 1% Monday after dropping 14% last week, with PacWest, First Citizens and Fifth Third Bancorp among the names leading the rebound.
