The musician Florence Welch, photographed in London on July 5, 2024. When I rang the Camberwell, South London, doorbell of Florence Welch, I held a tribute: “The Penguin Book of Spiritual Verse” (2022), edited by Kaveh Akbar. Chanel coat, price on request, (800) 550-0005; Valentino tights (worn underneath), $1,000; and Welch’s own dress, headband and jewelry. Exacerbating the mixed craving for and fear of having a baby and what it would mean for her art, Welch feels the intense pressure of aging as a female performer. Art begins in the body; art is limited by the limitations of the body; at some point, art exceeds the body and can live beyond the scope of flesh.

CNN —For the first time, scientists have found evidence that marine mammals could be inhaling microplastics, according to new research that detected the potentially harmful particles in the breath of bottlenose dolphins off the coasts of Louisiana and Florida. Previous research has discovered the tiny particles present in marine mammals’ tissues from exposure through consumption and then movement from the digestive tract into other organs. “We found that dolphins may be breathing in microplastics, even if they live in rural areas away from high levels of human activity. The researchers are unsure how inhalation of microplastics will affect dolphins, but they suspect it could have an impact on the creatures’ lung health, according to the study. The study team held up petri dishes to the mammals’ blowhole, through which dolphins inhale and exhale.

A doctor shortage is projected to hit 86,000 by 2036. According to the Rural Medical Training Collaborative, 133 rural residencies in family medicine and 69 rural-track programs are recruiting for 2025 enrollment, along with 30 internal-medicine residencies and 16 psychiatry residencies. Several pieces of legislation have also been introduced to Congress to address the doctor shortage. For example, HR 7855, the Association of American Medical Colleges-endorsed Rural Residency Planning and Development Act of 2024, would codify the Rural Residency Planning and Development Program, which funds the startup costs of residency training in rural areas, Dill said. From 2019 to 2024, the program has enabled the launch of 46 accredited rural residency programs across 38 states and Puerto Rico.

That includes researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who are developing a set of wearable robotic limbs to help astronauts recover from falls. When the wearer falls over, an extra pair of limbs can extend out to provide leverage to help them stand, conserving energy for other tasks. The questionnaires, known as client intake forms, give rare insight into the practices of Sage and other crisis pregnancy centers and how they use ambiguous language to describe their services. These practices are typical for crisis pregnancy centers across the country, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The tactics used at crisis pregnancy centers often create delays that leave women unable to access abortions, forcing them to continue their pregnancies. Most crisis pregnancy centers in the United States are affiliated with either Heartbeat International or Care Net, another anti-abortion network. Like Idaho, North Carolina provides state funding to crisis pregnancy centers.

In this 2004 photo, then-District Attorney Kamala Harris waits for a proceeding to convene in San Francisco. The long-standing problem of racial inequities in the criminal justice system is among the issues that prompted Harris to become a prosecutor in the first place. “I grew up knowing about the disparities, inequities, and unfairness in the criminal justice system,” Harris said during a 2019 town hall hosted by MSNBC. Her cautious stance on the issue frustrated many advocates of criminal justice reform, including those who expressed support for Harris on other issues.

“I had never seen a letter like that before and had no idea what having dense breasts even meant,” said Mullen, 38, of Andover, Massachusetts. Dense tissue makes it harder to find breast cancer on a mammogram; and that dense breast tissue is a risk factor for cancer. You've got dense breasts. “You cannot counsel an entire population of women with dense breasts with one policy that’s going to be appropriate for everybody,” Pearlman said. Although it’s true that women with dense breasts are 1.5 to 2 times more likely than other women to develop breast cancer, they’re no more likely to die from it.

Internal research accidentally revealed this week indicates TikTok knew its algorithm was harmful. Lawyers for children harmed by social media say the apps have long known they are hurting kids. According to NPR, TikTok's internal documents show officials at parent company ByteDance discussing internal studies that show the app can harm children. According to NPR, the unredacted internal documents show that TikTok touted its tools for limiting teens' screen time despite knowing from its own research that these features had "little impact." Matthew Bergman, a founding attorney of the Social Media Victims Law Center, which represents over 3,000 plaintiffs in cases of adolescents harmed by social media, told BI that the unsealed information is "certainly consistent with what we're seeing" across TikTok and other social media.

Nearly 130 million adults in the United States have some form of heart disease, according to the AHA. Having coronary heart disease raises the risk of future dementia by 27% compared with people without heart disease, the AHA statement said. Heart attacks and heart failureAbout every 40 seconds, someone in the United States will have a heart attack, the AHA estimates. Heart failure is a more severe form of heart disease, in which the heart is too weak to pump enough blood and oxygen to the body’s organs. That benefit held true even for people with existing diagnoses of cardiometabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

If your student is still years away from filling out applications, it may be wise to start contributing to a 529 savings plan. You won't owe taxes on withdrawals for qualified education expenses which include kindergarten through 12th grade tuition, college or trade school tuition and supplies and even student loans. Anyone can open a 529 plan for a beneficiary they choose — it doesn't have to be your own child and it can even be yourself. Nearly every state and the District of Columbia sponsors its own 529 plan. Your contributions may be deductible on your state taxes if you contribute to your home state's plan, for instance.

However, "the port strike could cause renewed goods-side inflation," she said. At the time, goods weren't hitting the shelves as quickly as consumers wanted them, which drove up prices. The U.S. port strikes could have a similar effect, "setting up a scenario reminiscent of the pandemic-era logistics crisis," Saidel-Baker said.

Nearly 1 in 3 Americans may have an undiagnosed iron deficiency, a problem that can lead to fatigue, brain fog and difficulty concentrating, a new study suggests. An analysis of data from more than 8,000 adults in the U.S. revealed that 14% had low iron blood levels, a condition known as absolute iron deficiency, while 15% had the right iron levels but their bodies couldn’t use the essential mineral properly, known as functional iron deficiency, according to the report published Tuesday in JAMA Network Open. Doctors don’t typically screen adults for iron deficiency, which is why the condition has been overlooked in many people. There had been hints in other studies suggesting iron deficiency might be more widespread than doctors assume. The rates of iron deficiency between men and women are more similar after the age of menopause, experts said.

Two reports released Monday provide a mixed but compelling outlook on the wave of book removals and challenges as the annual Banned Books Week begins for schools, stores and libraries nationwide. The ALA attributed the decline in book challenges in the first eight months of 2024, in part, to the work of anti-censorship activists and “success in courts” against laws that restrict book access. “But, you know, the First Amendment protects the rights of minors as well.”While the ALA’s report shows signs of book challenges abating, objections to certain titles still persist. Like the ALA, PEN said a large portion of the books targeted have racial or LGBTQ themes. It is supported by the ALA, PEN, the Authors Guild, the National Book Foundation and more than a dozen other organizations.

On social media, accounts with the usernames “Heather Baker Midwife” and “heatherbakermidwife,” one of which had her photo, sent “cease and desist” messages to Nosek and another former client.
