CNN —Moody’s on Monday evening downgraded 10 US banks and put the credit ratings of six others on review, an indication that the agency could also eventually downgrade those institutions. Some investors say that while the Moody’s downgrade isn’t groundbreaking, it’s a reminder that the economy, and markets, still have challenges ahead. Moody’s downgraded Commerce Bank, BOK Financial, M&T Bank, Old National Bank, Prosperity Bank, Amarillo National Bank, Webster Financial, Fulton Financial, Pinnacle Financial and Associated Bank. Wall Street firms fined $549 million for using WhatsApp and other channelsWells Fargo is among a number of Wall Street firms that admitted Tuesday to using WhatsApp, Signal and other messaging platforms for “off-channel” communications in violation of federal recordkeeping requirements. The Securities and Exchange Commission said the Wall Street firms acknowledged wrongdoing and have agreed to pay penalties totaling $289 million, reports my colleague Matt Egan.

Moody's downgraded the credit of 10 small regional banks by one notch apiece, while 17 other banks were either given negative outlook or had their rating put under review. In a note, Moody's cited many of the concerns around interest rate risk that led to the collapse of several regional banks earlier this year. Among the banks that were downgraded on Tuesday, shares of M&T Bank and Webster Financial fell more than 3% each. Shares of PNC Financial and Citizens Financial Group , which were given negative outlooks by Moody's, fell about 4%. That puts the fund on track for its worst day since May 4, when the fund fell nearly 5.5%.

Moody's cut the credit ratings of a host of small and mid-sized U.S. banks late Monday and placed several big Wall Street names on negative review. Moody's also changed its outlook to negative for 11 banks, including Capital One , Citizens Financial and Fifth Third Bancorp . Among the smaller lenders receiving an official ratings downgrade were M&T Bank , Pinnacle Financial , BOK Financial and Webster Financial . "Meanwhile, many banks' Q2 results showed growing profitability pressures that will reduce their ability to generate internal capital. Though the stress on U.S. banks has mostly been concentrated in funding and interest rate risk resulting from monetary policy tightening, Moody's warned that a worsening in asset quality is on the horizon.

In what amounted to 27 rating actions on US banks, Moody's pointed to rising costs of capital, deteriorating profits, and climbing risks to assets. In effect, much of the stress on banks Moody's is responding to can be chalked up to the Federal Reserve's policy decisions over the past year and a half. "Most banks' deposits were flat or down only modestly, but the mix worsened, with non-interest-bearing deposits declining and banks paying more for deposits," Moody's strategists wrote. So Moody's downgrades aren't all doom and gloom for these firms, and it's always possible the moves are reversed once the outlook turns rosier. Banks are in the money business, he explained, and the Fed has made money harder to come by.

The rule, which would implement a 2017 agreement by global regulators, aims to overhaul how banks gauge their riskiness, and in turn how much money they must keep on hand. Industry opponents have already begun to criticize the plan as banks seek to soften, delay, or otherwise derail the government's long-planned effort. The proposal would see U.S. regulators implement a previous global agreement via the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision. "Bank capital is critical," said Dennis Kelleher, president and CEO of Better Markets, which advocates for tougher financial rules. "However, maximizing Wall Street’s bonuses depends on minimizing capital and that’s why Wall Street fights to prevent regulators from requiring them to have enough capital."

However, Borthwick noted the bank's office CRE exposure was low relative to its overall loan portfolio, at 2%. July 20 (Reuters) - The first of the supercharged Big Tech firms to report in this earnings season - Tesla and Netflix - seemed to underwhelm markets overnight, cutting across the enthusiastic reception for big banks and knocking back bulled-up Wall St from 2023 highs. Although electric car giant Tesla (TSLA.O) comfortably beat second quarter profit forecasts, markets seized on plans for continued price discounting and squeezed margins as a reason to drag its shares down almost 4% in overnight trading. In the fixed income world, Treasury yields crept back higher ahead of next week's Federal Reserve meeting.

July 20 (Reuters) - Flagstar Bank, a subsidiary of New York Community Bancorp (NYCB.N), said on Thursday it has hired six private client banking teams from the now-defunct First Republic Bank. Three of the teams are based on the West Coast and three teams are based in New York City, the bank said in a statement. Flagstar Bank also bought deposits and loans of New York-based Signature Bank from U.S. regulators after Signature was closed in March. Citizens Financial Group (CFG.N) recently added 50 new senior private bankers and another 100 support staff in Boston, Florida, New York and San Francisco, mostly from First Republic.

July 19 (Reuters) - Three major U.S. regional banks met or beat profit expectations on Wednesday as higher interest rates allowed them to charge more for loans, while deposits stabilized, sending shares across the sector up. Investors have been anxiously awaiting regional bank second quarter earnings as they look for reassurance that the turmoil that rocked the sector earlier this year has finally passed. M&T Bank Corporation (MTB.N) and Citizens Financial Group (CFG.N) both beat Wall Street estimates from charging clients higher interest rates after the U.S. Federal Reserve raised borrowing costs to rein in stubborn inflation. The KBW Regional Bank Index (.KRX) and S&P regional bank index (.SPCOMBNKS) were each gaining nearly 2% in line with the broader market. M&T's deposits rose to $162.1 billion from $159.1 billion at the end of the first quarter, but fell about 4.9% year-on-year.

CNN —The bond and stock markets are finally seeing eye to eye when it comes to the Federal Reserve. Stocks and the 10-year Treasury’s real yield have begun moving inversely again, according to a research note from Morgan Stanley. That’s a reversal from earlier this year, when yields and stocks both moved higher. A concurrent rally both in bond yields and stocks is atypical. The Consumer Price Index report for June showed that annual inflation slowed to 3%, marking its lowest rate since March 2021.

Stocks could continue to gain momentum in the week ahead as traders turn their attention to earnings results after the past week's softer inflation news. The major benchmarks are headed for a positive week Friday after encouraging consumer and wholesale inflation in June cemented the likelihood that the Federal Reserve is closer to the end of its rate-hiking campaign. Some market participants expect this period could mark the trough for earnings, and urge traders to pay more attention to forward guidance. "And that's a great sign for the market and market health." This year's test, which was devised before the latest banking crisis, checked if banks would stay above the minimum 4.5% capital ratio during economic stress and macroeconomic instability. Banks will disclose their new stress capital buffer in the coming days and Well Fargo expects a reduction in the capital requirements for JP Morgan, BofA and Goldman. Goldman Sachs analysts said market focus will likely return quickly to potential increases to stress capital buffer and tougher regulations against the backdrop of Basel III revision. Citigroup (C.N) rose 0.7%, but trailed its peers as analysts said higher stress capital buffer would hamper its efforts to boost profitability.
