CNN —Gregg Berhalter has been fired as the head coach of the United States men’s national soccer team following the squad’s Copa America elimination, the US Soccer Federation announced on Wednesday. Berhalter, initially hired in 2018, led the team to the knockout stage of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In June 2023 he was given a new contract that was to run through the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup. The poor performance piled pressure on Berhalter, with critics questioning whether he still was the right person to lead the team heading into the 2026 World Cup. The men’s team is next scheduled to play on September 7 in an international friendly against Canada at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City.

Only a week ago, the military said that the pier had been repaired and reattached to the Gaza shore after breaking apart in turbulence. The post added that the pier would be “rapidly re-anchored” off the coast of Gaza when the expected turbulence passed. This relocation is the latest blow to the U.S. effort to facilitate aid deliveries by sea to Gaza. The pier was damaged by rough seas in late May and had to be taken out of service. The World Food Program, a U.N. agency, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday.

CNN —Former “General Hospital” actor Johnny Wactor was fatally shot in downtown Los Angeles while interrupting thieves Saturday, according to his agent and CNN affiliate KABC. Her son initially thought his car was being towed, and he approached the person to ask, Scarlett Wactor told KABC.
