First the gunmen fired through the door, seriously wounding both Hadar's father, Avida, and her 15-year-old brother, Carmel. Eventually, the militants would rupture the reinforced window with explosives and shoot her mother, Dana, through the gap. That began with a wardrobe being jammed against the other side of their safe room door and set alight. "They also used tires. But we were in survival mode and she was, in all honesty, a superstar," her father said.

(AP) — An Indiana Moms for Liberty chapter has followed the conservative group’s national playbook, challenging diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in school districts as part of its “parental rights” mission. Democratic candidate and Carmel city councilman Miles Nelson asked his opponent on stage earlier this month to denounce the local Moms for Liberty chapter. The local chapter is relatively new, but its June newsletter attracted wide condemnation after quoting Hitler on its front cover. “It’s a clear example of how opposition to Moms for Liberty can galvanize people to vote against conservative candidates,” Valant said. Shaw, a former teacher, said she is concerned about the Moms for Liberty chapter's influence in the county.

Abandoned golf courses are being reclaimed by nature

CNN —Golf courses, despite occupying large green spaces, are not necessarily good for the environment. Santa Barbara's Ocean Meadows golf course has been returned to its wetland state, which doubles as a flood defense for the city. Rivers and streams are often diverted or altered to make way for a golf course, but conservationists want them to flow freely. In other areas of the country, local councils are repurposing unprofitable municipal golf courses to create more natural spaces. A golf course turned nature reserve, Yalukit Willam can now be enjoyed by the Melbourne residents.

[1/3] People react as residents of Tel Aviv show support and solidarity with the families of hostages who are being held in Gaza in Tel Aviv, Israel, October 21, 2023. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to eliminate Hamas and Israeli troops could enter Gaza at any moment, but many families are urging him to focus solely on the hostages. Israel has a long experience of dealing with hostage crises, but has previously shied away from attempting rescue operations in the densely populated Gaza Strip. Some of the freed Palestinians returned to the ranks of Hamas, including its current leader in Gaza, Yahya Al-Sinwar. We have to help these hostages very fast," said Daniel Lifshitz, whose grandparents, aged 83 and 85, were abducted and have vanished into Gaza.

Two new immunizations promise to protect babies from respiratory syncytial virus – if people can find them. Providers are scrambling to offer Pfizer's vaccine, Abrysvo, to pregnant patients and Sanofi's monoclonal antibody, Beyfortus, to babies. Until now, the only preventative treatment was another monoclonal antibody called Synagis that's given once a month during RSV season, which generally runs from fall through spring. Sanofi's Beyfortus is a monoclonal antibody that's given directly to babies and provides them with immediate protection. "I know that [RSV]'s a threat to little babies, and so to have an opportunity to prevent illness in the first place is really exciting."

CNN —A spooky image of a mushroom, a beached orca taking its final breaths, and a pair of Nubian ibex battling on a clifftop are among the winning images of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2023 competition. In many parts of the world, horseshoe crabs continue to be harvested for their blue blood, which is used in the development of vaccines. Young photographer Carmel Bechler discovered several barn owls in an abandoned concrete building near a busy road. The Wildlife Photographer of the Year, in its 59th year, is produced by the Natural History Museum of London. By showcasing the diversity of life on Earth, the competition hopes to inspire people to care and advocate for the natural world.

When Fidji Simo took over as chief executive of Instacart in 2021, the grocery delivery start-up’s growth was cratering as its pandemic boom ebbed. Ms. Simo, a former executive at Meta with experience in advertising, played to her strengths. She also hatched a plan to sell software tools and other products to grocery companies to help improve shopping experiences, they said. Then she embarked on a good-will tour to visit the grocery companies and hosted their executives at her home in Carmel, Calif. As Instacart prepares to go public next week, it is a markedly different company. Envisioned in 2012 as a service that matched people at home with contract workers who would shop for them and deliver groceries, it has increasingly focused on advertising and software products as its delivery business has slowed.

It is considered "green" if produced with renewable energy and "gray" if the process is fueled with carbon-emitting natural gas. "When we get to the Gulf, (offshore wind) will start becoming much more disconnected from the grid," said Cheryl Stahl, principal project manager at risk assessment firm DNV. In comments to BOEM on the planned Gulf sale earlier this year, those three companies noted the potential of offshore wind to produce green hydrogen in the region. "The Gulf of Mexico is uniquely situated to facilitate and benefit from green hydrogen production via offshore wind," Shell said in April, pointing to the region's existing port and pipeline infrastructure as well as new federal funding for green hydrogen development. The American Clean Power Association, a trade group that represents offshore wind and other renewable energy developers, also said in its comments to BOEM that green hydrogen would "increase market viability of offshore wind."

There is little to be gained from getting overly attached to source material. When a story told first in one form is adapted into another, it becomes a different creature — in the details and sometimes the broad outlines, too. The book is a quiet, gentle thing, and it takes its time, layering in the details of Addie and Louis’s pasts and presents. Each has been lonely since long before their spouses died: his marriage marred by a scandalous affair, hers numbed by the death of a child. When Addie’s young grandson, Jamie, comes to stay with her, he’s lonely at first, too, and scared of the dark.

Share Share Article via Facebook Share Article via Twitter Share Article via LinkedIn Share Article via EmailHere's why the U.S. is having so few roundaboutsResearch shows roundabouts reduce crashes, clear up congestion and can save cities money. But America has a fraction of the roundabouts that far smaller countries like France, Spain and the United Kingdom have. Some states are adopting them, and the small town of Carmel, Indiana, now leads European cities. So why haven't more U.S. cities done this? Are they are all they are cracked up to be?

Consider the simple roundabout — a traffic circle well known in Europe but less familiar across most of America. Proponents say roundabouts can dramatically reduce crashes, injuries and deaths, can improve traffic and even save a city a fair bit of money. "'Can you get rid of this traffic light near my house or near my business?' The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which is funded by the insurance industry and issues widely watched crash test ratings for vehicles, says roundabouts are considerably safer for drivers and pedestrians and cause much less congestion than traffic lights. We have been rated over and over by various organizations [as] one of the best places to live in the United States; one of the best places to retire; one of the best places to raise families; one of the best places for single people.

Sally Kempton, who was once a rising star in the New York journalism world and a fierce exponent of radical feminism, but who later pivoted to a life of Eastern asceticism and spiritual practice, died on Monday at her home in Carmel, Calif. She was 80. Her brother David Kempton said the cause was heart failure, adding that she had suffered from a chronic lung condition. Ms. Kempton’s literary pedigree was impeccable. Her father was Murray Kempton, the erudite and acerbic newspaper columnist and a lion of New York journalism, the ranks of which she joined in the late 1960s as a staff writer for The Village Voice and a contributor to The New York Times. She was a sharp and talented reporter — although she sometimes felt she hadn’t properly earned her place as a journalist and owed it largely to her father’s reputation.

The next day, a longtime associate of Mr. Adams had been charged in a straw donor scheme to raise money for his mayoral campaign; the mayor was not implicated. In June, Wall Street Journal Reporter Dawn Gilbertson used the Colorado-based carrier's new flight subscription, which markets unlimited travel to anywhere in Frontier's network. Moreover, there are several caveats to "unlimited" travel. However, she also realized "unlimited" travel can actually be very limiting.

I hugged my father goodbye in Dublin and boarded a plane for New York. We had student work visas and a vague plan to make enough money to spend the summer in California. We had visions of swimming in the Pacific and walking across the Golden Gate Bridge. We fell in love with vibrant Berkeley and spent as much time as we could in its music stores, bookstores and cafes. It was 1998, but the earthy scent of Nag Champa lingered in the air, just as it must have in the hippie days.

Before the Hamilton County, Ind., chapter of Moms for Liberty achieved national notoriety this month for quoting Adolf Hitler in its newsletter, it was already at war over education in the schools of Indianapolis’s suburbs. School board meetings blew up over “critical race theory” and “social emotional learning.” A slate of conservative school board candidates endorsed by Moms for Liberty faced off last year against a slate opposed to the group’s efforts to commandeer the school system. The diversity, equity and inclusion coordinator of Carmel Clay Schools was under attack. Transgender students, or the theoretical threat such students could pose, were suddenly front and center. “It was bad,” said Carmella Sparrow, the principal at a charter school in Indianapolis who had moved to suburban Carmel for the public schools but found herself doing battle with Moms for Liberty and its supporters at local school board meetings.

New Zealand uses Betty, an aging Boeing 757, to transport Prime Minister Chris Hipkins. Betty's so prone to breakdowns that they sent an empty backup so he didn't get stranded in China. The twin Royal New Zealand Air Force planes are about 30 years old and due to be replaced by 2030. Back in New Zealand, acting Prime Minister Carmel Sepuloni was left to explain. In 2016, then Prime Minister John Key was on his way to India with a delegation when they got stuck in Australia until a backup plane was sent from New Zealand.

The economist Selma Hepp says home prices in some areas are rising because of limited inventory. The US housing market started off on a solid footing this year as home prices rose.
