CNN —An emperor penguin surprised locals when it appeared on a beach in Australia after making an epic journey of thousands of miles from its home in Antarctica. Ocean Beach is more than 2,200 miles due north of Antarctica, suggesting the penguin probably swam significantly further to reach Australia. “It stood up in the waves and just waddled straight up to us, an emperor penguin, he was probably about a meter high, and he was not shy at all,” he added. But as Earth’s temperature rises as a result of greenhouse gas and carbon dioxide emissions, sea ice is at risk of disappearing. This widespread “catastrophic breeding failure” is the first such recorded incident, according to the report, and supports grim predictions that more than 90% of emperor penguin colonies will be “quasi-extinct” by 2100 as the world warms.

The agency granted a similar waiver for Amazon's Prime Air program in May, though that was limited to flights in College Station, Texas, one of the cities where it has been conducting tests. Alongside the FAA approval, Matt McCardle, head of regulatory affairs for Prime Air, said the company is starting to make drone deliveries Tuesday near Phoenix, Arizona. Prime Air encountered regulatory hurdles, missed deadlines and had layoffs last year, coinciding with widespread cost-cutting efforts by CEO Andy Jassy. In response, Amazon executives told residents the company would identify a new drone delivery launch site by October 2025. WATCH: How Amazon's drone delivery program stacks up to competitors

Technology companies' push to directly power artificial intelligence with nuclear plants hit a major roadblock, after a federal regulator rejected a request to increase power for an Amazon data center. Constellation Energy and Vistra Corp. tumbled nearly 8% and more than 3%, respectively, in sympathy. The Amazon data center campus can still use 300 megawatts of power from the Susquehanna nuclear plant, according to Talen. The FERC decision does not impact Constellation's plans to restart the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in 2028 through a power purchase agreement with Microsoft . Tech companies are increasingly turning to nuclear power because it is reliable and does not emit carbon dioxide emissions.

How F1 can help engineer the world's net-zero future
  + stars: | 2024-11-04 | by ( Chris Hawes | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
F1 produced 223,031 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2022, with almost 75% coming from travel and shipping. Unlike soccer, which produces more than 30 million metric tons per year by some estimates, F1 has the engineering capabilities to provide solutions. As reported in April, these goals are difficult to square with F1's decision to increase the number of races in its calendar. The final pedal F1 can push is energy efficiency, and teams are already looking for ways to transfer learnings from the track to their infrastructure. "We want to take that approach ... and apply it to the building and infrastructure side of the campus as well."

Apart from making up for a shrinking labor force and the need to reduce workloads for drivers, the system also will help cut carbon emissions, she said. The plan in Switzerland involves an underground pathway, while the one being planned in London will be a fully automated system running on low-cost linear motors. Japan's shortage of truck drivers is worsening due to laws that took effect earlier this year that limit the amount of overtime drivers can log. The domestic transport capacity stands at about 4.3 billion metric tons, almost all, or more than 91%, by trucks, according to the Japan Trucking Association. As is true in most places, truck drivers have tough jobs requiring them to be on the road for days at a time, work that most jobseekers find unappealing.

"When you think about F1, you think about speed, you think about innovation, you think about efficiency," Ellen Jones, F1's Head of ESG, told CNBC's "Inside Track." The race cars themselves make up a tiny fraction of the sport's total emissions, at just 0.7%. In 2019, F1 established its sustainability strategy, setting an ambitious target to become net zero by 2030. "The key about our net zero by 2030 commitment is it's not just F1. Dominion Energy is talking with other tech companies about developing small modular nuclear reactors, after the Virginia utility entered into an agreement with Amazon last month to look at advancing the next-generation technology. Tech companies are investing in nuclear power as they hunt for carbon-free, reliable electricity to support the growing energy needs of artificial intelligence data centers. Alphabet 's Google agreed last month to purchase power from the startup Kairos Power, a developer of small modular reactors. Small modular reactors promise to reduce capital costs and speed the deployment of nuclear plants. There is no operating small modular reactor in the U.S. right now.

To be sure, it wasn't the typical beat-and-raise quarter that Linde has become known for over the years. Linde Why we own it: The industrial gas supplier and engineering firm has a stellar track record of consistent earnings growth. It increased to $10 billion thanks to the largest gas project sale in company history. Other companies in the industrial gas space have a shakier track record at this, especially for clean hydrogen projects. Guidance For the fourth quarter, Linde expects adjusted EPS in the range of $3.86 to $3.96, implying 8% to 10% growth compared with the year-ago period.

Small modular reactors (SMRs) promise to reduce capital costs and accelerate construction timelines that typically plague nuclear plants, but the technology has struggled to reach the commercial stage. The difference now is the appetite of tech companies for fossil-free fuel.
