WASHINGTON — An ex-Army soldier who was previously court-martialed for shooting a handcuffed Iraqi civilian was sentenced to over four years in federal prison on Monday for assaulting officers during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Richmond was sentenced to 51 months in federal prison after he pleaded guilty earlier this year to a felony count of assaulting, resisting or impeding an officer with a deadly weapon. Both the prosecution and defense agreed that Richmond's sentencing guidelines were between 51 and 63 months in federal prison. Another Jan. 6 rioter, Christopher Maurer, was sentenced to 50 months in prison on Monday after pleading guilty earlier this year to assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon. President-elect Donald Trump has described Jan. 6 defendants as "warriors," "unbelievable patriots," political prisoners and “hostages," and said he would "absolutely" pardon some, if not all, of the Jan. 6 defendants.

The Library of Congress said hackers broke into its communications systems and were able to read its email correspondence with congressional offices for most of this year. In a private notification sent Friday to some congressional offices, obtained by NBC News, the Library of Congress said that hackers “accessed email communications between congressional offices and some Library staff, including the Congressional Research Service.” The hackers had access from January until September, the notification said. The Library of Congress, the world’s largest library, offers a dedicated research staff for Congress. Last year, it gave congressional staffers more than 76,000 custom responses to inquiries, according to its most recent annual report. WASHINGTON — The House Ethics Committee plans to meet Wednesday to discuss its report into former GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general, a source familiar with the meeting confirmed on Monday. But the committee lost jurisdiction over Gaetz when he resigned from the House on Thursday and has not released any public report on its probe. On Friday, an attorney said that his client testified privately before the Ethics Committee that she personally witnessed Gaetz have sex with a minor. The House Ethics panel had been scheduled to discuss the report at its regular Friday meeting but it was postponed after Gaetz resigned. Appearing on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday, Sen. CNN —“Impoundment” is another word that Americans may need to learn in the vernacular of President-elect Donald Trump’s second term. Trump took the time to record a video about impoundment during the Republican primary season, and he promised seizing control over spending from Congress would be a top priority if he was elected. Impoundment occurs when Congress appropriates money that the president then declines to spend. As a result of these standoffs, Congress passed a law to curtail a president’s use of impoundment, particularly for policy reasons. Although Trump claims that his plan to raise tariffs will replace the revenue lost to these tax breaks, experts say that’s not possible. President-elect Donald Trump's tax proposals could cost trillions of dollars. In addition to eliminating taxes on certain income, Trump also floated making interest paid on car loans fully tax deductible; getting rid of the controversial cap on state and local tax deductions; ending the double taxation on Americans who live abroad; exempting police officers, firefighters, veterans and active-duty military from federal income tax; and even exploring jettisoning the federal income tax itself. Though his campaign didn’t release details on the proposal, Trump indicated that he would eliminate both federal income taxes and payroll taxes, which fund Social Security and Medicare. Virtually all tipped workers would get some tax relief if Trump also gets rid of payroll taxes on tips, the Tax Policy Center found.

Latino voters overall were more than a quarter of Arizona’s electorate — Gallego won them by 22 points while Harris carried them by 10 points. As for Latino men, Trump won them by 12 points nationally, marking a stunning 35-point swing from 2020 that powered him to victory in key states, according to NBC News' exit polls.
