Before last year, paid sick leave was generally not offered to railroad workers. That's instead of joining all the other major freight railroads in negotiating jointly with rail unions on an agreement over pay and benefits. The rail industry reached the brink of a strike in the fall of 2022 before Congress and President Joe Biden intervened to force rail workers to accept a contract. Union Pacific, BNSF and Norfolk Southern now have paid sick time agreements in place with all their unions. Canadian National also trails behind the big U.S. railroads, but still offers sick time to about 46% of its U.S. workers.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday suggested railroad stocks may be starting to climb. "Boy is that terrific for the West Coast operators, and there you're thinking about Union Pacific and Canadian Pacific Kansas City." Cramer reviewed earnings reports from Union Pacific , Canadian Pacific Kansas City , CSX and Norfolk Southern , saying all except the latter have potential. Canadian Pacific Kansas City saw the largest volume growth of the bunch. If investors feel confident about the economy, they have Cramer's "blessing to stick with Union Pacific, Canadian Pacific, or CSX — in that order, by the way — and forget about Norfolk Southern for the moment."

We don't know what we want. The rails are too significant to ignore even as the bond market seems to rely, I would say, wrongly, on the broader data. I think it's a factor of big money flows that aren't sensitive to what moves rates and don't mind being wrong. ATLANTA (AP) — It's a fight over land in one of rural Georgia's poorest areas, but it could have implications for property law across the state and nation. A hearing officer will take up to three days of testimony, making a recommendation to the five elected members of the Georgia Public Service Commission, who will ultimately decide. Railroads have long had the power of eminent domain, but Georgia law says such land seizures must be for “public use." “This is not a taking of necessity from private property owners to serve truly public interests and the public as a whole. The case matters because private entities need to condemn private land not only to build railroads, but also to build other facilities such as pipelines and electric transmission lines.

Photo: WTVQ/Associated PressHundreds of emergency workers in Kentucky were trying to put out a large fire on Thursday after a freight train carrying molten sulfur derailed a day earlier in Rockcastle County. The derailment of the train, operated by CSX , prompted evacuations in the small town of Livingston, authorities said. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency due to the derailment, which involved 16 cars, according to the Florida-based train operator.

State officials said Friday they were monitoring the air for traces of hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide, but there had been no detection of those substances at the derailment site or the nearby town of Livingston since Thursday morning. McCann said an access road has been built to reach the derailment area and a handful of crashed train cars have been removed. The CSX train derailed around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday near Livingston, a remote town with about 200 people in Rockcastle County. CSX said the cause of the derailment and what caused the sulfur to ignite are still under investigation. Officials said they are also monitoring water quality in the area but a nearby creek is dried up and doesn't have moving water.

LIVINGSTON, Ky. (AP) — A railroad company promised hotel rooms and Thanksgiving meals for people asked to evacuate a small Kentucky town after a train derailed, catching fire and spilling chemicals. The CSX train derailed around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday near Livingston, a remote town with about 200 people in Rockcastle County. Two of the 16 cars that derailed carried molten sulfur, which caught fire after the cars were breached, CSX said in a statement. CSX promised to pay the costs of anyone asked to evacuate, including a holiday dinner. He asked the public to keep in mind the emergency workers and people forced to spend Thanksgiving away from home.

(Reuters) - A train derailment involving 16 cars, two of which spilled molten sulfur, sparked a fire north of Livingston, Kentucky, railroad operator CSX said on Wednesday, prompting officials to tell residents to evacuate. The cause of the derailment and the scale of the fire were not immediately clear, though ABC News said one crew member suffered minor injuries. "We will work together with local authorities to secure the area and safety is our top priority as we develop a recovery plan," CSX said on its website, adding that the burning of molten sulphur releases sulphur dioxide gas. Giving initial details of the incident, which took place at about 2:23 p.m., it said at least 16 cars were involved, two carrying molten sulphur that lost some of their contents, which then caught fire. Short-term exposure to colourless sulphur dioxide can harm the human respiratory system and make breathing difficult, the U.S.

The CNBC Supply Chain Survey was conducted October 21-October 31 among logistics executives who manage freight manufacturing orders and transportation, including those at C.H. The new portals, equipped with high-speed cameras, will take hundreds of pictures of every passing locomotive and rail car. Unlike previous versions, these new inspection portals will be able to capture all sides of a train that passes through them with well-lit images. University of Delaware professor Allan Zarembski, who leads the Railroad Engineering and Safety Program there, said it's significant that Norfolk Southern is investing in so many of the portals. The Atlanta-based railroad didn't say how much it is investing in the technology it worked with Georgia Tech to develop. That crash put the spotlight on railroad safety nationwide and prompted calls for reforms.

A decline in transportation stocks is sending a worrying signal about the broader stock market. Transportation stocks are viewed as a leading indicator because they point to the movement of goods around the country. If companies are seeing a slowdown in growth and their stock prices fall, it could be a grim warning for the rest of the economy and stock market. Morning Bid: To 5% and beyond, bond yields soar

The company earnings picture, meantime, was mixed to sour over the past 24 hours in both the U.S. and Europe. Despite decent demand at a typically awkward 20-year bond auction on Wednesday, yields continued to spiral higher overnight and ahead of Fed Chair Jerome Powell's key speech later on Thursday. The upshot of all factors has seen Treasury yields climb ever higher through the night - with two-year and 20-year yields , now both above 5.25%, the latter at a record high and the former the highest since 2006. Ten and five-year tenors also saw yields soar to within a hair's breadth of 5% early on Thursday too. The ructions in the bond market and incoming earnings saw Wall St indexes (.SPX), (.NDX) hit their lowest in 10 days on Wednesday and futures were in the red again ahead of the open today.

(AP) — CSX reported a 24% drop in the railroad's third-quarter profit Thursday as it hauled 2% less freight, but the CEO said customers are noticing that its trains are running more smoothly. The Jacksonville, Florida-based railroad said it earned $846 million, or 42 cents per share, in the quarter. Hinrichs said customers are noticing that the railroad's service has been consistently better over the past year, and that is opening the door to more conversations about increasing the amount they ship on the railroad. Three CSX employees have died on the job since June, prompting unions to call for better training and a review of the use of remote-control locomotives. CSX is one of the nation’s largest railroads, operating trains on more than 20,000 miles (32,000 kilometers) of track in 23 Eastern states and two Canadian provinces.
