House Republicans kick off their impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden on Thursday, but a majority of voters do not believe the process should move forward. In a new national NBC News poll, 56% of registered voters say Congress should not hold hearings to start the process of removing Biden from office, while 39% say it should. An overwhelming majority of Democrats (88%) oppose the hearings, while 73% of Republicans support them. Just 35% of GOP voters say support for impeachment would make them more likely to support a lawmaker. But 62% of Democrats say voting to impeach Biden would make them less likely to support a member of Congress.

Ron DeSantis’ exclusive interview with NBC News’ Dasha Burns covered a wide range of topics, including two issues dogging DeSantis on the campaign trail: abortion and his state’s new Black history standards. And although he’s pledged to be a “pro-life president,” he’s broken with some others in the GOP field and has not embraced a federal ban on abortions. “I think the reality is that that basically means the states are going to have primary control over it,” DeSantis said. Asked if he would veto a national abortion ban, DeSantis said, “We will be a pro-life president, and we will support pro-life policies. DeSantis defended the standards, saying “it’s very clear that they’re showing that this was a grave injustice, and it contradicted the founding principles of our country.”“Those standards were not political at all.

Republican presidential hopefuls have just two weeks left to qualify for the first presidential primary debate, which is set for Aug. 23. Candidates must hit the minimum threshold of 40,000 unique donors and the polling thresholds 48 hours prior to that debate, and also commit to supporting the eventual GOP nominee. So far, seven candidates have appeared to qualify for the debate in Milwaukee: former President Donald Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, North Dakota Gov. Senate Majority PAC, the main Democratic outside group involved in Senate races, is already stockpiling campaign cash ahead of a brutal fight to hold onto the Senate, according to new fundraising numbers shared first with NBC News. The super PAC raised $37 million during the first six months of the year, ending June with $24.6 million in its campaign account. “After defying history and expanding Democrats’ Senate majority in 2022, Senate Majority PAC’s strong fundraising sets us once more on the path to success,” SMP president JB Poersch said in a statement. President Biden is headed to Philadelphia Thursday to tout his “Bidenomics” agenda, hoping once again to make early headway with voters over economic issues. And for now, Biden has a chance to tout his economic agenda and successes while his potential Republican presidential challengers are bogged down, either in a battle for second place or by the potential of another looming indictment. Doug Burgum’s campaign announced Wednesday that he had received contributions from more than 40,000 individual donors, meeting one threshold to qualify for the first GOP presidential primary debate. That could be a blow to both Republicans as they take on (or consider running against) primary candidates who have support from GOP leaders. Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., may not have the highest poll numbers, but he kicks off his presidential campaign flush with another precious campaign resource: money. Scott is likely entering the 2024 race with more cash than his GOP rivals. The senator's federal campaign committee had $21.9 million in its account as of March 31, according to campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election. Former President Donald Trump's campaign had $13.9 million in its account, while biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, who has largely self-funded his campaign, had $9.4 million on hand. On top of the GOP gubernatorial primary in Kentucky, there are other contests taking place on Tuesday that could provide some clues about 2024 — even though it’s hard to draw too many lessons from individual races. Jaime Raskin, who is also considered a potential Senate candidate. TIME previously reported that Trone told associates he is willing to spend $50 million of his own money on the Senate race, but Trone declined to directly answer questions about that specific figure. That’s what people are just tired of — politicians that want to be on CNN and MSNBC and talk, talk, talk but not get something accomplished.
Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, could face a primary challenge if he decides to run for re-election, with a top state legislator officially exploring a run. Utah state House Speaker Brad Wilson launched an exploratory committee on Thursday as he weighs challenging Romney, telling the Associated Press that the Beehive State needs a "conservative fighter" and referring to Romney as a "professional career politician." I’ll have the resources, and I believe the people of Utah would be with me." In an interview with the AP, Wilson declined to say if he would seek Trump's endorsement in the race.

Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday she is backing Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff in California's Senate race — if Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein decides not to run for re-election. But that hasn't stopped other Democrats, including Schiff and Rep. Katie Porter, from jumping into the race. Schiff has been a staunch Pelosi ally, and the former speaker tapped him to lead the team managing former President Donald Trump's first impeachment. And Schiff and Porter may not be the only House members who decide to run for Senate.
