CNN —USA Basketball’s decision to omit Caitlin Clark from the Olympic roster was initially met with some shock. However, USA Basketball has made a “terrible decision,” according to CNN Sport analyst Christine Brennan, by omitting a phenomenon like Clark from the roster. Breanna Stewart, a two-time WNBA champion, Brittney Griner, a nine-time All Star and A’ja Wilson, a two-time MVP, have all represented Team USA at an Olympic Games before. “She’s the biggest thing in sports, not just women’s basketball in the United States,” Brennan said of why Clark should be included. With or without Clark, Team USA is the overwhelming favorite to win gold in Paris and continue its unbeaten Olympic record stretching back to 1992.

A new women's basketball league has attracted a star-studded roster of investors from the media and sports world at a time when ratings and general interest in the WNBA and other professional women's leagues is rising. Unrivaled, the pro women's basketball league founded last year by New York Liberty's Breanna Stewart and Minnesota Lynx's Napheesa Collier of the WNBA, said Thursday that it had closed on a seed funding round ahead of its January launch. Athletes will be given equity in the new league, and Unrivaled said it will also feature contract opportunities that will offer the highest average salary in women's pro sports league history. Many female athletes play in other countries when the WNBA season ends to boost their earnings potential. Unrivaled's season will run from January to March and feature 30 of the top women's basketball players across six teams for a 3-on-3, compressed full court style of play on a soundstage in Miami.

CNN —Caitlin Clark had the best individual game of her fledgling WNBA career to date, registering 22 points, six rebounds and eight assists, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Indiana Fever from losing a third straight game. The Fever lost 91-80 to the New York Liberty on Saturday to begin the season 0-3, though the performance was a marked improvement on the 36-point drubbing suffered against the same opponent two days earlier. Clark’s 22 points came on an efficient 52.9% shooting, including 4-of-10 from three-point range, but the recent No. “I thought I came out and just played harder [than two nights ago], and I think that’s going to be just my biggest focus going forward,” Clark said, per ESPN. The WNBA’s stars aren’t asking to be paid an equal dollar amount to NBA players, however. WNBA players have made progress on salaries since 2020, when they reached their latest collective bargaining agreement with the league. Sharing the revenue pieBecause it’s a smaller and younger league, women’s players have had less bargaining power with team owners over their pay than men. While NBA players receive 50% of total NBA revenue, the WNBA must hit a certain revenue threshold annually before any revenue sharing agreements kick in. This has held back women’s salaries.
