This image, from June 2023, shows blades for the Haliade-X turbine in New Bedford, MA. A project to develop a facility described as the United States' "first commercial-scale offshore wind project" continues to move forward after its first turbine was installed in waters off Martha's Vineyard. In an announcement Wednesday, Avangrid — which is part of the Iberdrola Group — and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners said the Vineyard Wind 1 project would eventually have more than 60 turbines. "The project will consist of 62 wind turbines to generate 806 Megawatts, enough to power more than 400,000 homes and businesses in Massachusetts," Wednesday's announcement said. Avangrid CEO Pedro Azagra described the news as "a monumental achievement and a proud day for offshore wind in the United States," adding that there was "important work ahead" to install the project's remaining turbines.

Soon, factories processing whale oil, meat and bones sprung up on the islands. After crude oil was discovered in 1859, the demand for whale oil decreased dramatically in the following decades. In 1990, French national Serge Viallele set up the first whale watching company in the archipelago, on Pico island. The number of whale watching boats is strictly limited by a license system, which issues a maximum number per island – or per zone for the smaller islands. For now, whale watching remains a major draw for visitors to the islands.

CNN —Some 9th and 10th grade Bedford High School students, in Bedford, New Hampshire, mostly boys, took pictures of 11th and 12th-grade girls’ buttocks and breasts without their consent, “grading them and sharing those with others,” according to letters sent to parents Thursday and Friday by High School Principal Robert Jozokos. A Change.org petition, created Thursday by a 12th grade female who attends Bedford High School, said the students “deserve to be expelled” and not suspended. When asked what consequences the students face, Bedford School District Superintendent Michael Fournier said in an email to CNN, “Once the investigation is complete, the high school administration determines next steps. “The Bedford School District stands with all victims of harassment of any kind. We have engaged with community resources to assist both students and families as they need,” Fournier said in a District letter sent to parents Friday.

Christie spent the bulk of a Tuesday town hall in Bedford answering policy questions on topics ranging from unions to Taiwan, engaging audience members in back-and-forth conversations. “The fact is that there are no perfect candidates in this race, as I said before,” Christie said at the Bedford town hall. I’m not even under one criminal indictment.”Another person who attended the town hall in Bedford, New Hampshire voter Gary Johnson, 64, asked Christie a question banning assault weapons. After Christie could see Johnson was unsatisfied with his answer, Christie allowed Johnson to express his opinion. “You’re not going to fix mental health.”Nevertheless, Johnson, an independent, told NBC News he plans to vote for Christie in the primary.

A new study by HouseFresh aimed to find the “dirtiest” cities in the United States by analyzing 12.3 million sanitation-related complaints made to 311 systems across the country. The remaining 26 cities were ranked based on the number of sanitation complaints per 100,000 residents. By this metric, Baltimore was found to be the “dirtiest” city, with 42,295 complaints per 100,000 residents. New York landed in 17th place, with 3,728 complaints per 100,000 residents, or less than a tenth of Baltimore’s rate. Four Brooklyn ZIP codes were among the city’s dirtiest 10.

Betty Tyson, who spent half her life in prison for the brutal murder of a businessman in a gloomy alleyway in Rochester, N.Y., before a judge ruled that she had been wrongfully convicted, died on Thursday in Rochester. She was 75. Her sister, Delorise Thomas, said the death, in a hospital, was caused by a heart attack. On May 28, 1998, 25 years to the day after she was arrested, Ms. Tyson, 49, left the maximum-security Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in Westchester County and headed home to freedom after Monroe County’s district attorney announced that he would not seek to try her again. By then she had become New York State’s longest-serving female inmate.

A black bear attacked a young boy outside his home in Bedford, N.Y., on Tuesday morning, but his parents were able to scare the animal away and save their son, officials said. By the time emergency workers arrived, the boy’s mother, a doctor, had bandaged him, said Carlos Cano, the chief of the Armonk Fire Department. Mr. Cano’s colleagues, who responded to the scene, told him that the bear appeared to have grabbed the boy, who he said was about 7. When officers arrived, the bear was still in the family’s yard, and they shot it. The North Castle, N.Y., police department said the animal had presented a danger to emergency and workers and residents.

Private equity firms have bought up hundreds of smaller apartment buildings in trendy New York neighborhoods. Private equity firms own a very small, but growing, fraction of American real estate. Some argue that private equity, hedge funds, and other institutional investors are a convenient target and are being unfairly blamed for the nation's worsening housing affordability crisis. The recent increase in private equity purchases, particularly of single-family homes, has drawn scrutiny, including from Congress, over the last few years. Democrats also couldn't reach agreement on measures that would have boosted tenant protections, including rent stabilization and eviction protections.

In New York City, debates over affordability often center on the proliferation of opulent high-rise developments. But in the boroughs, deep-pocketed investors are buying up hundreds of smaller buildings, prompting a new set of concerns in the city’s deepening housing crisis. Over the past few years, private equity firms have quietly spent hundreds of millions of dollars buying apartments in neighborhoods like Bushwick, Bedford-Stuyvesant and Williamsburg in Brooklyn and Ridgewood in Queens, property records show. Private equity firms — which typically invest money on behalf of pension funds, endowments or other large sources of wealth — focus on assets, like businesses or housing, that they can buy relatively cheaply but that have big profit potential. Their expansion into the housing market across the nation has prompted scrutiny in Congress about whether the trend is amplifying America’s affordability problems.

CNN —The New York City Council approved a bill Thursday to make the pandemic-era outdoor dining program a permanent part of the city, with some restrictions, according to the Office of New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The city instituted the outdoor dining program in 2020 under the administration of Adams’ predecessor, Bill de Blasio, to assist the struggling restaurant industry during the height of the pandemic. Under the new bill, however, roadway dining structures such as outdoor sheds will need to be removed during the winter. Sidewalk dining will be allowed with a permit all year-round, according to a statement from the city council. If you’re moving to New York City and want to find the most popular rental neighborhoods, it makes sense to follow locals in the know. Recently, RentHop did just that by studying web traffic to New York City listings that originated from within the city. Two Queens neighborhoods and four Brooklyn neighborhoods showed increased popularity. Astoria, Queens, rose to the top from ninth place a year ago. Other drops in Manhattan included Greenwich Village and the West Village, ranked 10th and 11th, each dropping six spots from last year; and the Bowery area ranked 13th, falling seven spots.

On the eastern edge of Bedford-Stuyvesant — a Brooklyn neighborhood synonymous with hip-hop excellence — a tiny wellness center is tucked between a Pentecostal church and a real estate office. On certain nights, one could be excused for thinking this is a waiting room and not what it actually is: a battleground. Here, in this unassuming room, the Trap NY — one of several battle rap leagues based in New York City — hosts most of its events. But those tapped into today’s vibrant and multilayered battle rap ecosystem know that this modest gym is far more than a setting where wannabe rappers roast each other. Founded by Tyrell Reid, known as No Mercy, the Trap NY is a well-known institution where future stars of this culture are born.
