Pyle started answering strangers' questions about their gas and diesel engines on JustAnswer as a side hustle in October 2006. He quit his full-time $75,000-per-year job at Ford Motors when JustAnswer outpaced his salary in 2012, Pyle says. Pyle made $170,500 in 2023, an average of $14,200 per month, on JustAnswer, according to documents reviewed by CNBC Make It. The Basic Income Guaranteed: Los Angeles Economic Assistance Pilot, or BIG:LEAP, gave over 3,200 households $1,000 in monthly no-strings-attached cash payments for 12 months starting in January 2022. BIG:LEAP compared the outcomes of households receiving cash payments to nearly 5,000 households with similar incomes and family situations in the control group. In the last six months, participants were more likely to establish proximate safety and work toward protecting themselves in the future. Overall, it stands in contrast to what some critics of basic income argue, including that cash payments majorly reduce employment or don't prepare participants for the future. Housing cost burdens decreased among all study participants.

Discovery has filed a lawsuit against the NBA after the league rejected its matching offer to broadcast the league’s games for the next decade, ending the media company’s four-decade relationship with the NBA. “Given the NBA’s unjustified rejection of our matching of a third-party offer, we have taken legal action to enforce our rights,” a WBD spokesperson said in a statement. But the league said WBD “did not match the terms” of its deal with Amazon. While WBD maintains the rights to the NCAA March Madness tournament, along with the MLB, NHL and NASCAR, the NBA remains crucial to the media conglomerate. The cable channel TNT has built a programming slate around the NBA games, most notably the highly rated “Inside the NBA” show featuring Barkley, Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith and Shaquille O’Neal.

Gavin Newsom appeared this week wearing work gloves and Ray-Ban sunglasses as he hauled a garbage bag from under a freeway overpass in California. His message was obvious: He wanted state and local officials to clear out homeless encampments, just as he was doing, and he had signed an executive order to spur them into action. “There are no longer any excuses,” Mr. Newsom said in a video statement that was released Thursday and filmed at an encampment where everything from a box fan to a plastic kiddie pool had been stashed. Hours later, the mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, responded with her own set of visuals from a different encampment cleanup in the nation’s second-largest city. But in California, where Democrats dominate the state government and run its largest cities, the matter has become an intraparty dispute, especially after a Supreme Court decision last month gave local officials greater authority to crack down on encampments.

Amazon on Monday announced a new $79 Echo Spot alarm clock with a revamped design and improved audio quality. It marks the first upgrade to the device since Amazon introduced the Echo Spot in 2017. Amazon said members of its $139-per-year Prime program can purchase the new Echo Spot for $44.99 through July 17, when it is running its Prime Day megasale. Amazon is updating the Echo Spot as it is expected to overhaul Alexa, the voice assistant that powers its smart speakers, CNBC previously reported. One result of this openness is a love of travel — I've visited 40 of the 50 United States and 25 countries (and counting). So, I still take an annual solo trip these days. Like many parts of parenting, traveling solo is a push-pull in two directions for me. Tiffany Nieslanik traveled all over Europe when she was younger, and it showed her that solo travel isn't scary. When that time comes, I don't want to have forgotten who I am outside "mom," and my annual solo trip helps me remember who that is.

Los Angeles residents, long exhausted by homelessness, were optimistic when Mayor Karen Bass started an aggressive effort to move people from encampments into motel rooms in late 2022, soon after she took office. Sidewalks that had been blocked by lines of tents were cleared. But even as Ms. Bass touted the success of Inside Safe, her signature program aimed at moving people off the streets, she warned that the population of homeless Angelenos could still grow before her efforts made a dent. Ms. Bass and her allies on Friday received major validation: For the first time in six years, the number of people who were homeless in Los Angeles decreased from the year before, according to the region’s most recent point-in-time count, which took place in January. In Los Angeles, the nation’s second largest city, where encampments have vexed neighbors for years, the overall number of people experiencing homelessness decreased by 2.2 percent, while the number of unsheltered people in the city — homeless people who are not in emergency shelter and are sleeping on the street, in tents or in cars — decreased by 10.4 percent.
