Amazon on Monday announced a new $79 Echo Spot alarm clock with a revamped design and improved audio quality. It marks the first upgrade to the device since Amazon introduced the Echo Spot in 2017. Amazon said members of its $139-per-year Prime program can purchase the new Echo Spot for $44.99 through July 17, when it is running its Prime Day megasale. Amazon is updating the Echo Spot as it is expected to overhaul Alexa, the voice assistant that powers its smart speakers, CNBC previously reported. The company typically makes a slew of announcements around its Echo and Alexa lines at its fall event, usually held in September.

One result of this openness is a love of travel — I've visited 40 of the 50 United States and 25 countries (and counting). So, I still take an annual solo trip these days. Like many parts of parenting, traveling solo is a push-pull in two directions for me. Tiffany Nieslanik traveled all over Europe when she was younger, and it showed her that solo travel isn't scary. Each year, close to two million people watch Nathan’s hot dog eating contest on ESPN, according to the frankfurter brand. Boys participating in a pie eating contest at the 4-H Club fair in Cimarron, Kansas. At the time, PR mavens Max Rosey and Mortimer Matz thought a hot dog eating competition would drum up some publicity for Nathan’s. Los Angeles residents, long exhausted by homelessness, were optimistic when Mayor Karen Bass started an aggressive effort to move people from encampments into motel rooms in late 2022, soon after she took office. Sidewalks that had been blocked by lines of tents were cleared. But even as Ms. Bass touted the success of Inside Safe, her signature program aimed at moving people off the streets, she warned that the population of homeless Angelenos could still grow before her efforts made a dent. Ms. Bass and her allies on Friday received major validation: For the first time in six years, the number of people who were homeless in Los Angeles decreased from the year before, according to the region’s most recent point-in-time count, which took place in January. In Los Angeles, the nation’s second largest city, where encampments have vexed neighbors for years, the overall number of people experiencing homelessness decreased by 2.2 percent, while the number of unsheltered people in the city — homeless people who are not in emergency shelter and are sleeping on the street, in tents or in cars — decreased by 10.4 percent.
