Evan Spiegel, CEO of Snap Inc., speaks onstage during the Snap Partner Summit 2023 at Barker Hangar on April 19, 2023 in Santa Monica, California. Snap shares tanked 30% in Wednesday morning trading, a day after the company missed revenue estimates and issued light guidance in its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings report. Snap reported revenue of $1.36 billion for the quarter, slightly below the $1.38 billion expected by analysts, according to LSEG, formerly known as Refinitiv. They noted that strong ad improvements and impression growth at Meta and Amazon could represent another headwind for Snap's ad revenue. "Stepping back, 4Q was a mixed bag, but the acceleration in 1Q gives us confidence that things are getting back on track," the analysts wrote.

Carlyle, the Washington, DC-based alternative asset manager which manages some $382 billion in assets, this week announced that it would install a new chief human resources officer. Jennifer Barker, a partner who's been with Carlyle since 2016 and presently serves as the firm's head of international human resources, will step into the role of chief human resources, taking over for Bruce Larson, formerly a senior human-capital executive at Goldman Sachs who joined Carlyle in 2019, according to a Carlyle regulatory filing. Others include Lúcia Soares, the firm's chief information officer and head of technology transformation, appointed in July; Eleena Melamed, global chief operating officer of investor relations and head of client strategy, appointed in August; and Meg Starr, formerly Carlyle's global head of impact, who became global head of corporate affairs in December. In a Thursday memo announcing the switch, Schwartz said Barker will report to Christopher Finn, Carlyle's chief operating officer, and take a seat on the firm's leadership and operating committees. She is also interested in rethinking how companies deliver feedback to their employees, perhaps through the arcane rite of the performance review.

UK inflation posts first rise in almost a year
  + stars: | 2024-01-17 | by ( Hanna Ziady | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
London CNN —UK inflation accelerated in December for the first time since February last year, official data showed Wednesday. Core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy prices, remained stuck at 5.1%, while services inflation increased from 6.3% to 6.4%. The UK data mirrors the trend in the United States and Europe of slight upticks in headline inflation. Energy prices could also rise if the conflict in the Middle East escalates further. Still, several leading UK economists shrugged off the latest increase in inflation, noting that inflation could return to the Bank of England’s 2% target by the spring, helped by recent falls in energy prices.

“Succession,” “The Bear” and “Beef” won top awards in a show that seemed like a throwback to another era, when TikTok didn’t exist and people still tuned in for appointment TV. The comedian and first-time Emmy host sang the 1970s and 1980s theme songs for “Good Times” and “The Facts of Life,” before moving on to honoring “Miami Vice” with Blink-182’s Travis Barker on the drums.
