The CDC says infections are a leading cause of death in dialysis patients. Black and Hispanic patients on dialysis experience dangerous bloodstream infections at higher rates than white patients, federal health officials said, urging healthcare providers to work to reduce disparities in infection risks. U.S. adults undergoing dialysis treatment for end-stage kidney disease were 100 times more likely to have Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections than people not on dialysis, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday in an analysis of data from 2017 to 2020. Staph infections are caused by a common bacterium found in people’s noses and on their skin and can result in severe disease or death.
Feb 6 (Reuters) - Preventable bloodstream infections related to kidney failure treatment are more common in U.S. Patients whose kidney function falls below a certain level require a dialysis machine periodically to do the organs' work of cleansing the blood. The highest use of central venous catheters was seen in Black patients ages 18 to 49. Even after accounting for use of these catheters, the risk of S. aureus bloodstream infections was still higher in Hispanics than in whites. There were also more S. aureus bloodstream infections in areas with higher poverty, crowding, and lower education levels.

Aureus Asset Management CEO Karen Firestone has been sharing her investment thesis on CNBC's "Halftime," and now she shares her favorite stocks for the near and long-term with CNBC Pro, and offers advice on finding sell discipline and gauging risk.
One of the more senior brokers told me that the most important lesson I could learn about the stock market was – drumroll, please – "Buy low. By the second week in March, the S & P 500 had dropped 12% and the Nasdaq Composite had fallen about 20%. In mid-June, the S & P had sunk 23.4% from its Jan. 3 peak of 4,796, and the Nasdaq had collapsed more than 30%. On Oct. 12, the S & P closed at 3,577, down 25.4% from its peak. Since the market low in October, about half of the cohort has climbed 20%.
Data released Friday showed consumer spending, adjusted for inflation, declined 0.2% in December from the prior month. That means consumer spending slowed at the end of 2022, stoking fears of a recession ahead. AXP 3M mountain American Express shares have gained nearly 18% so far this year. Group A Streptococcus (GAS) is the name for bacteria that can cause infections like strep throat, scarlet fever and impetigo. However, the 2014 study examined different bacteria and found that while their numbers increased following the nasal flu vaccine, that did not lead to increased bacterial disease. A recent UK study has also found that while infections of influenza itself be linked to increased cases of Group A Strep, the nasal vaccine is associated with a reduction in bacterial infections. But it did not investigate group A strep bacteria; rather, the study investigated Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus, which Mina said in an email, are “very different” pathogens to group A strep. A 2014 study does not show the nasal spray flu vaccine causes Group A Strep.
