A poll released last week from AAPI Data, a data analytics firm that focuses on Asian Americans, found that 66% of Asian American voters plan to support Harris and 28% intend to back Trump. The same survey found that 62% of Asian American voters say they have a favorable opinion of Harris, compared with 35% who hold an unfavorable view. Republican officials declined to elaborate on efforts to win over Asian American voters. The Harris campaign has three full-time staffers at the national headquarters dedicated to engaging Asian American voters, a spokeswoman said, with additional staff being deployed to Georgia and other battleground states. As she presided over a virtual phone bank from her kitchen one night last week, she said she believed Asian American voters could make the difference in her Southern battleground state.

For the study, released jointly by Chinese American civic engagement nonprofit Committee of 100 and NORC at the University of Chicago, researchers sampled 504 Chinese Americans in March. But the Biden-Harris administration published a memorandum in 2021 condemning the use of racist rhetoric toward Asian Americans. About two-thirds of respondents said they felt that the rhetoric used by U.S. media when reporting on the issue negatively affects how strangers treat them. It featured 1,105 Asian American registered voter respondents, and reported a margin of error of plus or minus 5.1 percentage points. Before Harris entered the race, 46% of Asian American voters said they would choose Biden. Meanwhile, 28% of Asian American voters have a favorable opinion of Donald Trump, slightly down from previous polling. Tim Walz was found to be favorable among 56% of Asian American voters, more than twice the percentage that found Republican Sen. JD Vance favorable.

In the first college admissions process since the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action last year, Asian American enrollment at the most prestigious U.S. schools paints a mixed, uneven picture. Columbia University — which, unlike the other Ivies, groups Pacific Islanders with Asian Americans — saw an increase of nine percentage points in its enrollment of Asian American applicants, while Brown saw an increase of four percentage points. They found that registration for Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders increased by 43%, from 550,682 to 787,982 voters. However, things changed in 2020 when Asian Americans had a significant double-digit increase in presidential election turnout. Ramakrishnan pointed out that since the data set ended before Vice President Kamala Harris entered the race, it’s likely that the increase in Asian American voter registration is even more dramatic. “We’re seeing this more generally, regardless of race and ethnicity, but especially what I’ve seen is among younger voters, among female voters, voter registration has gone up significantly in the last month,” he said. “I would expect the Harris candidacy to also drive higher voter registration and higher voter interest among Asian Americans.”For more from NBC Asian America, sign up for our weekly newsletter.

BOSTON — A Massachusetts man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for threatening to kill a group of Asian Americans and repeatedly hitting one of them with his car. “This defendant targeted this man solely because he was Asian American. He yelled “go back to China” and threatened to kill them before repeatedly hitting one of them, a Vietnamese man, with his car. There had been a dramatic spike in verbal, physical and online attacks against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, which was thought to have originated in China. “There are bad people who do bad things and good people that do a bad thing,” the attorney wrote in the sentencing memorandum.

The contenders for San Francisco mayor are perfecting the pronunciation of their names in Cantonese.
