Peter Thiel attributed recent Trump support in Silicon Valley, in part, to Elon Musk's efforts. Thiel told journalist Bari Weiss that Musk provided "cover" for other tech leaders to support Trump. AdvertisementBillionaire Peter Thiel credited Elon Musk, in part, with helping other tech leaders feel comfortable publicly supporting President-elect Donald Trump. Weiss asked Thiel if the Tesla CEO was "the critical ingredient" that allowed other business leaders to feel safe endorsing the divisive president. Thiel characterized the feeling inside Silicon Valley as one of growing frustration toward "corporate governance" and "how ridiculous it's gotten to manage these ideologically deranged millennial employees."

AdvertisementIt was perhaps inevitable that Elon Musk — a tech titan and a prolific gamer — would try to turn government spending into a game. It's a natural move for Musk, who came up in the tech world in the early 2000s, as "gamification" took hold. "That's that kind of logic that you end up having if you're not really cautious about how it's designed." AdvertisementFor the government, that might hinge on what counts as waste and whether Musk's leaderboard can get people to agree. Otherwise, Hon said gamification might have short-term benefits but backfire in the long term as important, less-tangible factors are crowded out by overemphasizing one metric.

"Investors should take advantage as munis are poised to deliver good performance into year-end and 2025, in our view," he added. Interest income from municipal bonds is free of federal income taxes. Further, if the investor resides in the same state that issues the bond, the interest income can be exempt from state taxes. Both of those tax cuts could reduce muni bond demand, Li said. Nearly 63% of the US population has fluoridated water flowing through their taps, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Hawaii is the only US state without any fluoride in municipal taps; fluoridated water is only available there on military bases. As such, fluoridated water is now mandated on any military base with more than 3,300 people. Rumors have circulated that drinking fluoridated water can lead to bone cancer (osteosarcoma), but long-term studies from both the UK and US haven't found any credible evidence of higher rates in areas where people drink fluoridated water. Their review concluded that some studies of fluoride consumption have found links between higher fluoride water levels and lower IQs in kids.

The coming reign of the only child
  + stars: | 2024-11-11 | by ( Ann Friedman | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +16 min
American women are having kids later in life, leaving less time to bear multiple children. American women in general are having children later, but the delay is most pronounced among the most educated. Even religious conservatives, who are biblically motivated to be fruitful and multiply, are starting families later and more often having only one child. So what will the coming reign of the only child mean for America? Just as having children is no longer seen as a required stage of adulthood, having siblings will no longer be a de facto part of childhood.

Chatter that President-elect Donald Trump could appoint former U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to oversee trade policy is moving markets, from the dollar on currency exchanges to stocks that would be sensitive to tariffs. During Trump's first term as the president, Lighthizer was central to his protectionist policy and was U.S. trade representative role when Trump launched the trade war with China. "Any clues on Trump's appointments may be market moving," Jim Reid, research strategist at Deutsche Bank, said in a note. Trump's policy proposals to cut taxes and slap tariffs on imports are believed to undermine the currencies of some of America's biggest trading partners. Bank of America tracks a basket of consumer stocks with high exposure to China tariffs, and these companies plunged on Friday.
