Icelandic volcano erupts for seventh time in a year
  + stars: | 2024-11-21 | by ( ) www.nbcnews.com   time to read: +3 min
A volcano near Iceland’s capital erupted late on Wednesday for the seventh time in a year, spewing fountains of lava and smoke, the country’s meteorological office said, but there were no disruptions to air traffic or infrastructure. The eruption started with little warning at 11:14 p.m. local time Wednesday and created a fissure just under two miles long. The activity is estimated to be considerably smaller than the previous eruption in August, Iceland’s meteorological office that monitors seismic activity said. The first signs of an eruption were recorded just 45 minutes before a massive ground fissure was opened by magma forcing its way through the earth’s crust, Iceland’s meteorological office said. However, there had been no noticeable increase in seismic activity in recent weeks, the meteorological office said.

The suits were brought by the Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana, an advocacy group serving residents of 24 counties in the state. Federal prosecutors have also alleged that tenant screening checks can be discriminatory. Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana“I sent them my expungement records, but I kept getting denied,” Williams recalled in a phone interview. TransUnion settled the suit without admitting or denying the allegations and paid $15 million, the largest amount recovered in a tenant screening matter, the FTC said. “We want safe communities where people can contribute, can build their lives, and that’s what fair housing laws are here to do.”

“Far too often, patients relying on federal government health care programs are forced to accept bureaucratic, one-size-fits-all coverage,” Crapo said. But Trump’s lack of specificity about health care could empower Oz to fill in the blanks. Oz said on an AARP questionnaire: “We can expand Medicare Advantage plans. If Oz is confirmed and chooses to push more people into Medicare Advantage, as he has pitched, he may not have too hard a time. “In our focus groups, people say they’re satisfied with both traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage, and they make their choices based on different preferences,” Neuman said.

The Department of Justice is calling for Google to divest its Chrome browser, following a ruling in August that the company holds a monopoly in the search market. Chrome, which Google launched in 2008, provides the search giant with data it then uses for targeting ads. Additionally, the DOJ said that Google be prevented from entering into exclusionary agreements with third parties like Apple and Samsung. In August, a federal judge ruled that Google holds a monopoly in the search market. Last month, the DOJ indicated it was considering a breakup of Google businesses, including potentially breaking up its Chrome, Play or Android divisions.

Former Trump FBI deputy director and CNN senior law enforcement analyst Andrew McCabe said Thursday that Rogers would be a “totally reasonable, logical selection” to nominate to lead the agency, pointing to his knowledge of the intelligence community and his experience at the FBI. CNN has reached out to the Trump transition team and the FBI for comment. Sources previously said that Patel had been lobbying for the FBI director position, where he would be well-positioned to try to investigate Trump’s political enemies, declassify sensitive information and purge career civil servants. He also briefly considered installing Patel as deputy FBI director in the closing weeks of his first administration. The deputy FBI director job is a career position – not a politically appointed role – and then-Attorney General William Barr helped talk Trump out of putting Patel at the bureau at the time.

Bangkok, Thailand CNN —A Thai court has handed down the death penalty to a woman accused of fatally poisoning at least a dozen people, the first ruling in a high-profile serial murder case that has gripped the nation. The court convicted her of charges including premeditated murder, robbery causing death and spiking food or other consumables resulting in death. In addition to the death sentence, she was also ordered to pay compensation for unrecovered stolen items. Thanicha told CNN on Thursday that Saratat denies the accusations against her and plans to appeal her conviction. No executions have taken place since, but courts have handed down the death sentence in several cases, including the high-profile murders of two British backpackers in 2019.

The United Nations’ nuclear watchdog agency censured Iran on Thursday evening for failing to cooperate fully with the agency’s monitoring and inspection, as the country is obligated to do under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. The censure by the International Atomic Energy Agency could lead to penalties against Iran, including renewed economic sanctions. The agency’s Board of Governors voted 19 to 3, with 12 abstentions, for the censure, despite intensive lobbying by Iran and its foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi. The three votes against were cast by Russia, China and Burkina Faso. Mr. Araghchi promised that Iran would retaliate if the resolution passed, most likely choosing to accelerate its enrichment of uranium to levels close to bomb grade, rather than putting a cap on that enrichment.

AdvertisementTrump wants the power to refuse to spend federal dollars that Congress has already approved. Impoundment has been floated as one way that Trump could singlehandedly enact DOGE's recommended cuts to the federal budget. Meanwhile, lawmakers on Capitol Hill — including those on the House and Senate Appropriations Committees that control government spending — don't seem concerned about Trump's impoundment power grab just yet. He added that there "would be a problem" if Trump tried to impound funding approved by both chambers of Congress. AdvertisementWhat Trump could do with such sweeping powersEven if Congress won't grant Trump impoundment powers, he has another potentially more attractive avenue — the courts.

It’s true that analysts expect the Trump administration to generally be less hostile to mergers. Yet it’s also true that some Republicans – including some tapped to join the Trump administration – have been described as “Khanservatives” because they’ve called for tougher, not weaker, antitrust scrutiny. Earlier this year, Gaetz told NOTUS that the FCC chair’s work “inspired me” and he expressed hope she stays in power for a Trump administration. As Gaetz fights to survive a tough nomination process to be attorney general, Comcast dropped a bombshell in the media industry by spinning off MSNBC, CNBC, USA, Oxygen and other networks. “It’s hard not to look at the spinoff of CNBC and MSNBC as potentially a response to the new administration,” said Petro.

Amazon is the largest player in the market, offering cloud services via its Amazon Web Services (AWS) arm. Ofcom subsequently referred its cloud review to the CMA to address competition issues in the market. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau on Thursday issued a finalized version of a rule saying it will soon supervise nonbank firms that offer financial services likes payments and wallet apps. That would include popular services from Apple and Google , as well as payment firms like PayPal and Block . "Digital payments have gone from novelty to necessity and our oversight must reflect this reality," said CFPB Director Rohit Chopra. A year ago, the CFPB said it wanted to extend its oversight to tech and fintech companies that offer financial services but that have sidestepped more scrutiny by partnering with banks. The CFPB said the rule will take effect 30 days after its publication in the Federal Register.

Trump has not announced his pick to lead the SEC, but the expectation is that the next chair will be friendlier to Wall Street and crypto. The best and worst developments in public health have always come from moments of crisis. But many of the elixir victims were very young children, and agency officials wasted no time spinning the incident up into a national crisis. The public grew skeptical of the effort when the vaccines were linked to an extremely rare but serious side effect. “It was supposed to be this great triumph,” says Joshua Sharfstein, a professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and author of “The Public Health Crisis Survival Guide.” “But it ended up seeding a generation of vaccine hesitancy instead.” The takeaway from these and similar parables is clear, Dr. Sharfstein says: Crisis can be a powerful catalyst for shaping policy and improving society. 6 Airports in Northern Haiti Are Reopened to U.S. Flights
  + stars: | 2024-11-21 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
The Federal Aviation Administration said on Thursday it was allowing U.S. flights to resume to six airports in northern Haiti. had barred U.S. airlines from operating in Haiti for 30 days after three commercial jetliners were struck by gunfire, including a Spirit Airlines flight as it was trying to land at the country’s main airport in Port-au-Prince, the capital. That flight diverted instead to an airport in the Dominican Republic. The stoppage of flights had stranded passengers all over the world and also affected the flow of aid into Haiti, as even humanitarian flights were grounded. The agency said its bar on flights to Port-au-Prince would remain in place until Dec. 12, but it was allowing American carriers and general aviation pilots to fly to six airports in Haiti: Port-de-Paix, Cap-Haïtien, Pignon, Jeremie, Antoine-Simon and Jacmel.

If confirmed by the Senate, three key nominees would largely be responsible for executing Trump's "drill, baby, drill" agenda across the federal government. The Interior Department leases millions of acres of public lands and waters for oil and gas drilling. The oil and gas industry is pushing the Trump administration to issue a new five-year offshore-leasing program. Woods of ExxonMobil told Semafor last week that the Trump administration should keep regulations to curb methane emissions from oil and gas infrastructure. But Trump attacked electric vehicles on the campaign trail, adopting the oil and gas lobby's messaging.

The two have now shed some light on what Trump has called the Department of Government Efficiency plans to do. They appear to be taking a page from Musk’s playbook for extreme cost-cutting. “We won’t just write reports or cut ribbons,” Musk and Ramaswamy wrote in an opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal, addressing skepticism that their initiative, known as DOGE, can achieve.
