GREENVILLE, N.C. — Sen. Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance on Sunday defended his 2021 comments about allocating more votes to people with children, saying they were a “thought experiment.”In a widely circulated video clip from a 2021 speech he gave to a conservative organization called the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, Vance suggested giving more votes to people with children than to people who have none. “Let’s give votes to all children in this country, but let’s give control over those votes to the parents of those children,” Vance said in his 2021 speech. “And I said, well, if we’re going to give the rights to the children, then we should actually just allow the parents to cast those votes. She said her husband’s “quip” was an effort to bring attention to U.S. policies that fall short of providing the support families need. What is it about our leadership and the way that they think about the world that makes it so hard sometimes for parents?’” she added.

When the judge threw out the involuntary manslaughter case against Alec Baldwin earlier this month after finding that the prosecution had withheld evidence that could have helped his defense, it left key questions that have hung over the case for more than two years unresolved. “As the week went by, it just didn’t, it didn’t seem like a very strong case,” Johanna Haag, known to the court as juror No. 7, said in a phone interview on Saturday. Gabriela Picayo, who was identified in court documents as juror No. 9, said that she too had been having serious doubts about the case against Mr. Baldwin before it was dismissed.

Read previewThe involuntary manslaughter charges against Alec Baldwin over the 2021 death of "Rust" cinematographer Halyna Hutchins has been dismissed, but the actor isn't able to put all the legal proceedings behind him just yet. While a New Mexico judge dismissed the case after determining that the state withheld key evidence from Baldwin's defense, the actor still faces civil lawsuits from Hutchins' family. Baldwin's lawyers have sent letters to New Mexico prosecutor Kari Morrissey and Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza asking them to preserve documents for future litigation, according to Reuters. The unequivocal victory by Alec Baldwin’s legal team in a New Mexico courtroom on Friday has lifted the threat of criminal liability for the actor’s role in the fatal shooting of the cinematographer on the set of the movie “Rust.” But several lawsuits brought against him after the tragedy still loom. Litigation was filed by “Rust” crew members and the family of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer who was killed when an old-fashioned revolver that Mr. Baldwin was positioning for a close-up discharged a live bullet that should not have been on the set. The proceedings against Mr. Baldwin were held off somewhat by the involuntary manslaughter case, which fell apart in a stunning series of events on Friday. The lead special prosecutor called herself to the stand before the judge dismissed the case permanently, determining that the state had intentionally withheld evidence from Mr. Baldwin’s defense that could have helped him. Mr. Baldwin walked out of the courtroom in tears.

CNN —The dramatic dismissal of the involuntary manslaughter case against actor Alec Baldwin over withheld evidence could mean the release of convicted “Rust” movie armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed from a New Mexico state prison, legal experts say. But the Baldwin case imploded on Friday – just two days after the trial began – with the sudden and shocking twists and turns of a nail-biting legal thriller. “I fully expect Hannah Gutierrez Reed to make the same argument for her conviction to be overturned,” Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor, told CNN. Her ruling regarding the failure to disclose the ammunition should carry significant weight in the Gutierrez Reed case, CNN legal analyst Joey Jackson said. Hannah Gutierrez Reed will go free as well.

While dismissing the involuntary manslaughter case against Alec Baldwin on Friday, the judge did not hold back. She delivered a searing criticism of the prosecution and state law enforcement officials who oversaw the case, declaring that they had intentionally and deliberately withheld from the defense evidence related to the fatal shooting on the set of the film “Rust.”“If this conduct does not rise to the level of bad faith, it certainly comes so near to bad faith as to show signs of scorching prejudice,” Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer said. The judge’s decision to end the case against Mr. Baldwin — without the option for the prosecutors to revive it — was the conclusion of a shocking day at the Santa Fe County Courthouse, in which a high-pressure trial against a movie star turned into an interrogation of the prosecution’s conduct. And it came after a series of missteps by different teams of prosecutors left Mr. Baldwin in legal limbo for more than two years.

Alec Baldwin 's involuntary manslaughter trial in New Mexico was put on hold Friday while the judge considers a defense motion to dismiss the case over disputed ammunition evidence. "We don't know if it's a live ammunition match or not," Baldwin's attorney Luke Nikas told the judge. The prosecution has said that the ammunition was not connected to the case and was not hidden. The issue came up Thursday on the second day of trial during defense questioning of sheriff's crime scene technician Marissa Poppell. "This is a wild goose chase that has no evidentiary value whatsoever," Morrissey told the judge Friday.

US actor Alec Baldwin participates in a pretrial hearing in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on July 8, 2024. A New Mexico judge on Friday dismissed the criminal involuntary manslaughter case against Alec Baldwin on the third day of the actor's trial, after ruling that prosecutors kept evidence about ammunition related to the case secret from defense lawyers. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer tossed the case against Baldwin, which related to the October 2021 accidental shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of his movie "Rust," with prejudice. Baldwin wept as the decision was announced, on what was the third day of trial in the case in state court in Santa Fe. "There is no way for the court to right this wrong," Sommers said, referring to the prosecution's actions.

The trial of Alec Baldwin took a dramatic turn on Friday when a manila envelope of previously unexamined evidence was brought into the courtroom, prompting the judge to put on blue latex gloves, cut it open with a pair of scissors and then get down from the bench to examine ammunition in the well of the courtroom. It was an unusual scene in a case that has seen dramatic twists and turns for more than two years. Lawyers for Mr. Baldwin, who is on trial for involuntary manslaughter for his role in the fatal shooting of the cinematographer on the set of the film “Rust,” called for the case to be dismissed on Friday, accusing the prosecution of hiding evidence that could help explain how live ammunition wound up on a film set where it was supposed to be banned. “They buried it,” Luke Nikas, a lawyer for Mr. Baldwin, said in court, accusing the prosecution of failing to disclose that it was given a batch of rounds said to be connected to the case when the defense asked to review all the ballistic evidence. “They put it under a different case with a different number.”

However, the technician testified the items were catalogued separately from Baldwin’s case and were not included in the “Rust” case inventory or tested to see if they matched the lethal round. Baldwin’s team argued prosecutors did not properly disclose this evidence to the defense and asked for the case to be dismissed. In response, prosecutor Kari Morrissey said investigators determined the ammunition was not a match to those found on the “Rust” set and had no evidentiary value to the case. The judge has ordered additional witnesses to testify before she renders a ruling on Baldwin’s motion to dismiss the case. At opening statements Wednesday, prosecutors alleged Baldwin was reckless with firearms on set and violated the “cardinal rules of firearm safety” with his actions.
