Alyssa Powell/Business InsiderThe American Express® Green Card just got a refresh, with a record-high welcome bonus offer and improved benefits. The travel statement credit isn't as straightforward as it sounds, but it's a great deal if you can use it. Plus, if you max out the travel statement credit, you'll offset the entire annual fee (and then some) for the first year. Amex Green Card benefitsThe Amex Green Card already comes with statement credits that can help offset the annual fee, though they're not the sole reason to open the card. But there are other Amex Green card benefits that are appealing to travelers that don't require signing up for a subscription.

May 4 (Reuters) - American International Group Inc (AIG.N) beat market estimates for first-quarter profit on Thursday, as record underwriting gains cushioned the blow from lower alternative investment returns. AIG, one of the world's biggest commercial insurers, said net premiums written in its general insurance for the quarter ended March grew 5% to $6.97 billion. Total consolidated net investment income rose 9% to $3.5 billion, partially offset by lower alternative investment income, AIG said. The New York-based company's general insurance underwriting income rose 13% to $502 million, its strongest first-quarter underwriting results, the insurer said. The general insurance accident year combined ratio was 88.7%, compared with 89.5%, a year earlier.
Morning Bid: Hike and hold, bank angst and Apple

As the Fed delivered what markets assume will be the last rate hike of a brutal 13-month, 500-basis-point tightening cycle, further aftershocks from the March bank blowups reverberated in the background. And given they had advance knowledge of next week's quarterly loan survey before Wednesday's rate decision, it suggests the bigger picture they see remains somewhat equivocal. Norway's central bank raised interest rates as expected and signalled more to come. Events to watch for on Thursday:* European Central Bank policy decision, statement and news conference* U.S. first quarter unit labor costs and productivity, April layoffs, March trade balance, weekly jobless claims. May 3 (Reuters) - Carl Icahn's empire took another hit on Wednesday when his holding company's shares plunged further in the aftermath of a critical report from short seller Hindenburg Research, bringing the valuation drop since the short seller attacked it to more than $6 billion. IEP shares hit an intraday low of $31.78 - their lowest in more than a decade. The company is now worth $11.5 billion, 35% less than its value on Monday before Hindenburg published its report. The Hindenburg report has wiped $7.5 billion off Icahn's fortune, leaving him with a net worth of $10.8 billion, according to Forbes. “There is a karmic quality to this short report that reinforces the notion of a circle of life and death," he tweeted on Tuesday.
The biggest week of this earnings season showed us that things aren't as bad as many feared. The week ahead of earnings, including several more Club names, should tell us more. The results are always important, but it's the guidance and management commentary we will really hone in on to better understand the path ahead. In Amazon's case, a solid first quarter for its AWS cloud business was overshadowed by management seeing a material slowdown in April. ET: Nonfarm Payrolls Looking back It was the biggest week of this earnings season for the Club as several of our mega-cap holdings and industry bellwethers reported results.
The news that Johnson & Johnson had finally begun a roadshow for its long-awaited Kenvue spinoff elicited some satisfaction among IPO watchers. "The investor base is very familiar with the products," Matthew Kennedy, IPO market strategist at Renaissance Capital told me. In the 10 years from 2013 to 2022, about $55 billion was raised on average each year in the IPO market. But in 2022, the IPO market cratered. "Hopefully this will be a more rational IPO market," Rao told me, noting that IPOs have typically underperformed the market because of high initial prices.

It's been a tumultuous period for Quinn and the storied law firm he built over the past 37 years — now the world's largest litigation firm with hourly rates that can be north of $2,000. But behind the scenes, a shift at QE has been the talk of elite law firm circles. Indeed, the firm – known as a singular, even freewheeling, institution that brands itself as the "#1 Most Feared Law Firm in the World" — may appear to be less in the image of its founder as a generational shift brings changes. "We all thought it was important that the world understands this is not a one generation law firm." One former firm partner in California says he believes Quinn's inner circle generally got better deals.

Dividend stocks may be the way to go for investors as a recession becomes more likely, according to UBS. Dividend stocks on average outperformed the market by 4.5% during the 2001, 2008 and 2020 recessions, the bank said. "Dividend stocks can provide a margin of safety during uncertain times." Given this backdrop, UBS highlighted a slew of dividend stocks with big upsides, based on the bank's price targets. Analysts also forecast three-year dividend growth that's at least in the mid-single digits, in addition to sustainable payout ratios.

Fears of banking contagion remain, and investors are worried that global economies will suffer if the effects of higher interest rates torpedo more lenders. Michael Milken had helped popularize the financial instrument, with many using it as a way of funding leveraged buyouts. The country ended up getting external financial support from the International Monetary Fund and a $50 billion bailout from the United States. GLOBAL FINANCIAL CRISIS OF 2008The biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression was rooted in risky loans to shaky borrowers, which started to lose value after central banks raised interest rates in the period leading up to the crisis. watch nowHow 'early college' programs workIn some cases, students can even complete an associate degree by the time they finish high school, a type of dual enrollment known as "early college." These programs are not restricted to high school students on a specific — and often accelerated — academic track, as many AP classes are. Early college students are also more likely to enroll in college and earn a degree compared to their peers who were not enrolled in early college programs, according to one study by the American Institutes for Research. Although there are up to 900 early college programs nationwide, according to Zeiser, many are still under the radar. Early College High School is a Title I school in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District, which means there is a high percentage of low-income students.

Insurer American Insurance Group had some of the best underwriting performance in its history although net income fell. American International Group Inc. had improved profit margins in its core property-casualty unit and rising sales of some products, which were offset by volatile markets and severe winter weather that hurt results in some other areas. AIG , one of the biggest insurers by premium volume of businesses worldwide, had some of its best underwriting performance in history, continuing the company’s multiyear turnaround. The unit showed improvement in a key profitability metric that measures how much of each premium dollar is sent out the door in claims and related costs. For the full-year, AIG held those costs to below 90 cents, a long-held goal.

The about-turn in rates markets in just two weeks has been extraordinary - with Fed funds futures pricing moving from a terminal rate as low as 4.8% to 5.26% on Wednesday. Two-year Treasury yields soared to a 3-month high of 4.64% on Tuesday - where current Fed rates sit - and only gave back a fraction of that on Wednesday. U.S. stocks held up remarkably well on Tuesday - helped by hopes recession fears are easing even as rate speculation intensifies. Sterling slipped as UK inflation fell faster than expected last month, even though the annual inflation rate remains in double digits. They do not reflect the views of Reuters News, which, under the Trust Principles, is committed to integrity, independence, and freedom from bias.
Last month, property and casualty insurer Travelers Companies Inc (TRV.N) also reported a slump in quarterly profit, due to losses arising from the winter storm. AIG's underwriting income climbed 27% to $635 million from $499 million a year earlier, while net premiums written in its general insurance business fell 6%. The general insurance accident year combined ratio improved to 88.4% from 89.8% a year earlier. The metric excludes catastrophe losses, and a ratio below 100 shows the insurer earns more from premiums than it pays out in claims. So are we on the brink of a corporate credit crisis? Before the Bell spoke with Ruth Yang, managing director and global head of thought leadership at S&P Global Ratings to discuss what lies ahead for the corporate credit market. Before the Bell: What’s your big picture view of the credit economy right now? There will be slower growth with thinner margins and that’s going to change how people look at their investment opportunities.
