Handwritten notes from Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's papers on a major abortion case in 1989. The correspondence and notes foreshadow where O’Connor landed in the 1992 Planned Parenthood v. Casey case, when Justice Anthony Kennedy, hostile to Roe v. Wade in 1989, was ready to join O’Connor in upholding Roe. Accelerating the tensions all around was the time pressure of the Missouri case. O’Connor wrote that Kennedy said, “Roe is just flawed analytically” and that he wanted to “return this debate to democratic process” in the states. Sixty-seven percent of respondents in the Marquette poll supported the court’s decision in the abortion pill case. Americans still unhappy with the court overallAlso consistent over the past couple of years has been overall near-record dissatisfaction with the Supreme Court. The latest Marquette poll found 57% of Americans disapprove of the court, compared with 61% who felt that way two years ago. The Marquette poll was conducted from July 24 to August 1 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. The survey found that views on the Supreme Court depended heavily on partisan affiliation, with just 24% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents viewing the court favorably compared with 73% of Republicans.

In an August 1 note to clients, the bank's top global strategist urged investors to sell stocks when the Federal Reserve issues its first rate cut. Hartnett and his team studied the last 12 rate-cutting cycles going back to 1970 and identified three varieties of rate cuts. Hartnett said surging global central bank rate cuts are signs that the economy is in for a rough stretch. Investors expect the Fed to cut rates for the first time this cycle at its September meeting. "Emergency Fed rate cuts being priced in makes little sense given the economic backdrop in the U.S. and would only serve to destroy policy maker credibility."

In 1973, the median size of completed single-family homes was 1,525 square feet, according to US Census data. But as the cost of buying a home has exploded and McMansions have fallen out of favor, homebuilders have reversed course, building smaller homes with an eye to first-time buyers. Today, smaller, often more affordable homes under 1,000 square feet are harder to come by in most US suburbs. According to an NAHB survey, 17% of homebuilders said they built homes on smaller lots in 2023 to support home sales, and 14% said they built more townhouses. With Harris at the top of the ticket, Democrats now see a chance to refocus voters on the issue and restore their margins among the abortion rights voters who had notably drifted away from Biden. In both the 2020 and 2022 campaigns, voters who backed legal abortion provided overwhelming support to Biden and other Democratic candidates. Across all of those battleground states, Biden this year was performing well below that level with voters who support legal abortion, polls have found. Those abortion rights voters also split about evenly on whether Biden or Trump was better for the economy. “Many of them aren’t single issue abortion voters; they are worried about the economy and inflation, they are worried about immigration,” McLaughlin said.

Justices weren’t in a hurry to hear the caseThe immunity case first arrived at the justices’ door in December. Perhaps, she hoped to influence lower court judges to read the Roberts opinion as more flexible for a future prosecution. In the month since the Supreme Court granted former President Donald J. Trump substantial immunity from prosecution, a recurring critique of the decision has emerged. Lawyers and scholars say the ruling bears a striking resemblance to Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision establishing a constitutional right to abortion. They point to at least four features of the immunity decision that also figured in Roe, which was overturned in 2022 as “egregiously wrong” in a slashing majority opinion from Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. He wrote that there was nothing in the text of the Constitution about abortion, that the majority had concocted a three-part test for enforcing the right out of whole cloth, that a revision of that three-part test had introduced a vague and unpredictable “undue burden” standard and that the ruling had removed an important question from the legislative process. “The judicial method employed by Trump v. United States resembles Roe v. Wade in the ways that matter,” Richard D. Bernstein, who filed a supporting brief in the case on behalf of conservative critics of Mr. Trump’s legal positions, wrote in a blog post a week after the decision.

Martin S. Indyk, a diplomat, author and foreign-policy thinker who spent decades trying to solve the riddle of Middle East peace, twice as the United States ambassador to Israel and later as a special envoy for President Barack Obama, died on Thursday at his home in New Fairfield, Conn. An Australian-bred academic with a quick wit, blunt manner and pro-Israel pedigree, Mr. Indyk cut an unconventional figure in the State Department of the 1990s. But he propelled himself to the heart of America’s efforts to make peace between the Israelis and Palestinians. In 2013, he shuttled from one side to the other as Mr. Obama’s emissary. Fifteen years earlier, he helped craft an agreement between them at the Wye Plantation in Maryland on behalf of President Bill Clinton.

One letter dated July 8, 1981 – three weeks before the royal wedding – was handwritten by Diana on Buckingham Palace stationary, telling Collison about the pre-wedding preparations. There are eight countries in the world with declared nuclear arsenals, four of which — the United States, China, India, and Russia — have a complete nuclear triad. Israel's triad has some notable distinctions and limitations compared to those of the other four.
