If Robert Kaplan still had a say in the matter, he'd be pushing for a half percentage point interest rate reduction at this week's Federal Reserve meeting. The former Dallas Fed president told CNBC on Tuesday that making the bolder move of 50 basis points would better position policymakers heading into the latter part of the year and the economic challenges ahead. "If I were sitting at the table, I would be advocating for 50 in this meeting," Kaplan said during a "Squawk Box" interview. One basis point equals 0.01%. Kaplan ran the Dallas Fed from 2015-21 and is now a managing director at Goldman Sachs.

Bausch + Lomb parent company Bausch Health is spinning off the eye-care company with an upcoming IPO which will list on the New York Stock Exchange and TSX with the ticker symbol “BLCO”. This would greatly benefit BLCO stockholders, of which Bausch Health is the largest. As an 88% owner of BLCO, Bausch Health's value derived from such a sale would be $12.32 billion. Adding the value of the proceeds from BLCO sale, the Xifaxan cash flows and RemainCo yields a total value of $25.93 billion for Bausch Health. After subtracting 100% of the Bausch Health debt, that would yield an equity value of $10.49 billion or $28.19 per share.

The Wall Street investment bank sees the S & P 500 rising about 6% to 6,000 in the next 12 months from Friday's close of 5,626.02. Goldman Sachs suspects that a reversal is coming as mid-cap earnings top those of large caps. And while small caps should post even higher earnings growth next year, that cohort is filled with unprofitable companies, Ma noted. "Low-quality segments of the market, such as small caps, will likely remain pressured at these levels due to weak balance sheets and low profitability." Below are 25 mid-cap stocks in the S&P 400 that Goldman Sachs spotlighted due to their solid balance sheets, double-digit expected earnings growth for 2025, above-average sales growth, and cheap valuations based on their forward earnings multiple versus their five-year median.

DirecTV and Disney have reached a deal that brings Disney’s ESPN and other channels back to the pay-tv provider’s customers after a roughly two week blackout. On Saturday, DirecTV and Disney said they reached a deal that called for “market based terms” on pricing. DirecTV will be able to offer Disney’s streaming services in its packages and a la carte, the company said in a release Saturday. The amount of customers DirecTV lost during the dispute was not “immaterial,” said DirecTV Chief Marketing Officer Vince Torres at Goldman Sachs’ Communacopia & Technology Conference on Thursday. DirecTV offered its customers a $30 credit, financed by stopping payments to Disney as soon as the blackout began, Torres said.

As one VC partner told Business Insider at the time: "Sam is bigger than Taylor Swift." But the bigger you are, the faster the fall, and a few months later, things began to unravel. Lower interest rates may impact your investment portfolio following the Fed's first rate cut. "They get spooked by something like policy changes and sell out of a diversified investment portfolio. "Generally, lower interest rates boost the economy as lending gets cheaper for consumers and businesses, " says Eckles. However, as interest rates fall, the attractiveness of these cash investments declines. The inverse relationship between bond prices and interest rates means that as rates fall, bond prices rise, providing another return component.

It's also common to draw parallels between the dot-com bubble and today's hype, leading investors to wonder if there's an AI bubble that's about to pop, too. Goldman Sachs' big AI headline of the month is "To buy, or not to buy, that is the question." The note from September 5, led by Peter Oppenheimer, suggests the answer is "to buy" but also to diversify. And the third is the application providers, which are the companies creating services for end users to harness AI.
