Its flagship Medallion Fund enjoyed annual returns of 66% during a period starting in 2018, according to Gregory Zuckerman's book "The Man Who Solved the Market." U.S. stocks have been rather volatile in the past month, but in the past week they had a strong run on hopes of rate cuts. Tech stocks, which would be boosted by rate cuts, have been a big part of that rally — with Meta , Alphabet and Amazon in particular having a strong showing over the past couple of weeks. Elsewhere, analysts are getting more optimistic on China stocks, especially those in the tech sector. Kevin Liu, managing director and strategist at CICC Research, said his conviction call would be a structural barbell allocation with themes including tech names "with high-end upgrading opportunities," among others. Stock screen Against this backdrop, CNBC Pro screened FactSet for stocks from four exchange-traded funds (KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF, Vanguard Information Technology ETF, Invesco China Technology ETF and the iShares MSCI China Multisector Tech ETF) to find stocks that: have beaten the S & P 500's around 9% year-to-date performance.

I think shares of the one-time cloud computing darling are at risk of falling even lower and I will give a bearish options trade to capitalize on it. As CRM matures and growth rates moderate, it simply cannot continue to command the industry-leading valuations it once did and has to face the reality of its fundamentals. This suggests that CRM will likely continue to trade back towards the midpoint of the range in the $210-220 area. This makes a valuation that is 40% higher than the S & P 500 harder to justify when growth rates are slowing down significantly. The trade With earnings in three weeks, CRM options prices are slightly elevated and warrant using a spread to lower the cost of seeking bearish exposure.

How US presidential election years affect the market

But if the past century is any guide, the long-term consequences of US presidential election years on investor portfolios, including 401(k)s, is minimal at best. Unsurprisingly, those four presidential election years occurred at times of seismic events: The Great Depression. The S&P 500 alone has generated an average return of 7% during presidential election years since 1952, according to LPL Financial. If you limit that to presidential election years in which the incumbent president is running for reelection, the average jumps to 12.2%. “If you’re not going to make a change in a nonelection year, you shouldn’t do so in a presidential election year,” Mukherjee said.

Inflation canceled that, and now it's almost certain that Wall Street's summer is canceled, too. That means Wall Street's fantasies of decamping to the Hamptons for the summer have shattered. You can see why this tug-of-war will keep Wall Street on its toes and off Georgica Beach. The simplicity that Wall Street hoped for is one of the few options that's no longer on the table.

Invigorating growth is critical: When the economy expands, it improves standards of living, promotes innovation and makes households wealthier. Economic growth in Spain and France was stronger than expected last year. But the US is outperforming mainly for one key reason: Robust productivity growth. Productivity growth came in well below expectations in the first three months of the year, according to Labor Department data released last week. A “course correction” isn’t an even stronger US economy: Economic policymakers around the world need to address a range of key issues.

Every year, tens of thousands of investors flock to Omaha — and many more tune in around the world – to watch Berkshire Hathaway chairman Warren Buffett field questions from shareholders at his company's annual meeting. But without getting into the nitty-gritty, here's two key pieces of advice Buffett shared on Saturday — one about money, and one about life. The description of the process he and longtime partner Charlie Munger employed offers tremendous insight to his investment philosophy. The point for investors: Buffett doesn't buy any investment based on vibes or impulse. "Charlie and I missed a lot of things … we never worried about missing something that we didn't understand," Buffett said.

Gold prices flutter higher as Fed holds rates steady

The Fed left interest rates unchanged on Wednesday as expected. Its latest policy statement kept key elements of its economic assessment and policy guidance intact, framing its discussion of interest rates around the conditions under which borrowing costs can be lowered. Traders were relieved that Powell slammed the door shut for further hikes, helping gold prices climb back above $2,300, City Index senior analyst Matt Simpson said. Lower interest rates increase the appeal of holding non-yielding bullion. The U.S. non-farm payrolls report is due on Friday.

The economist thinks the firm no longer keeps up with what CEO Elon Musk promises. Musk really wants Tesla to be a tech company, but it's an automaker, DeLong said. Advertisement"For all the current Tesla shareholders planning to offload their holdings in the next couple of years, everything hinges on the company succeeding as a meme stock, and Musk is diligently working toward that goal," DeLong argued. Last month, investor Roger McNamee warned that the stock would start trading like a car company if shareholders decided that Musk wasn't central to its narrative. In a similar vein, short-seller legend Jim Chanos called Tesla a "hopes and dreams" stock, trading more on Musk than fundamentals.

In an effort to navigate a market that remains highly concentrated under Big Tech's dominance, but also ripe for stock pickers, Barclays has dozens of stocks that share similar characteristics to the tech heavyweights. However, some select Big Tech remained fairly strong throughout the sell-off, with stocks like Alphabet and Apple bucking the downtrend. While Big Tech valuations still appear reasonable to Barclays analyst Venu Krishna, he pointed out that they're "not the only game in town," and suggested investors diversify their portfolios to beat their benchmarks. Yet, market returns, earnings upside, and institutional investor exposure remain highly concentrated in Big Tech," Krishna said in a Tuesday note.
