CNN —Satirical news site The Onion won the auction to acquire conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ Infowars, which was sold off as part of a defamation settlement after he falsely called the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre a hoax. The Onion’s bid was backed by the families of eight victims of school shooting and one first responder. Jones was previously ordered to pay $1.5 billion to families of the Sandy Hook shooting victims. Jones had used Infowars to spread some of the most disturbing and disgusting lies and conspiracy theories into the public discourse. Though Collins declined to detail the bid amount, he said it was the highest and that the funding came from The Onion itself.

Bidders interested in acquiring the media company founded by conspiracy theorist Alex Jones will battle it out at a bankruptcy auction Wednesday, potentially silencing his Infowars broadcasting platform for good. "All you leftists celebrating the end of Alex Jones and Infowars, you're fools," he said. Jay Westbrook, a University of Texas bankruptcy law professor, said the ultimate goal would be to earn a "maximum return for the victims." Jones, 50, founded Infowars, which operates under Free Speech Systems, in 1999. "Despite the judgment, Alex Jones still has a First Amendment right to speak his mind and continue to speak about anything he wants," he said.

Tesla is recalling 2,431 Cybertrucks to replace defective drive inverters, according to notices made public by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Wednesday. It's the sixth recall of the Cybertruck since the angular steel pickup went on sale about a year ago. Tesla addressed the previous Cybertruck recall with an over-the-air software update to fix an issue that caused images from the truck's backup cameras to not display correctly after the driver shifted into reverse. The latest Cybertruck recall requires the replacement of a part called a drive inverter, which provides power to the wheels of the vehicle. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has clashed with NHTSA and other federal regulators for years.

Jones was found guilty of defamation by juries in Texas and Connecticut for using his Infowars megaphone to falsely claim the massacre was a hoax. But if “bad guys” buy Infowars, as Jones put it Monday, he’ll “keep broadcasting until they show up” after the Wednesday auction and shut down the fringe outlet. A man was killed Monday while fixing a dump truck in Mississippi when scalding asphalt fell on him, police said. Officers found the private contractor, who was tasked with picking up asphalt, “buried under hot asphalt," the chief said. "It appeared to be some type of malfunction with his dump truck,” Wade said. Darrell Sheriff, 41, was underneath the truck working on a hydraulic line when the tailgate opened and asphalt fell on him, the Associated Press reported. His family said he was a “good, hardworking family man,” Wade said.

Traffic on I-96 near Webberville had been temporarily stopped late Saturday as utility crews were completing work on power lines in the area. A semitruck with a trailer was heading westbound around 11:45 p.m. and crashed into the stalled vehicles. Police said more than a dozen vehicles were involved in the crash. Michigan State Police said Sunday that the victims were a 29-year-old man from Carson City who was driving a Ford pickup and three relatives from Lansing who were in a Chevy Trax. Authorities continued cleanup efforts Sunday and said I-96 near the site of the accident would “be closed for an indefinite period.”
