Wall Street’s expectations for a September rate cut rose to roughly 93% on Thursday from 73% the day before, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. “A September rate cut should be a done deal at this point,” wrote Ron Temple, chief market strategist at Lazard, in a Thursday note. Some economists worry that if the Fed doesn’t cut rates by then, cracks could begin to deepen in the labor market. A September rate cut “may not be the magic elixir some investors are seeking,” wrote Brent Schutte, chief investment officer at Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management, in a Monday note. On an annual basis, consumer prices are increasing at their slowest pace since June 2023, matching the lowest annual rate since early 2021.

Singapore’s state food agency (SFA) has approved 16 species of edible insects for sale and consumption in the country, according to a July 8 public circular addressed to food traders. Insects approved by the SFA include locusts, grasshoppers, mealworms and several species of beetle. “Insects are an overlooked source of protein and a way to battle climate change,” according to a 2022 report by the World Economic Forum. Live insects are commonly sold in Singapore as food for pets like songbirds and reptiles, but they could be a new and exciting option for human diners. “As the insect industry is nascent and insects are a new food item here, SFA has developed an insect regulatory framework which puts in place guidelines for insects to be approved as food,” SFA said.

Mashups involve combining two or more dishes — sometimes a mixture of sweet and savory or a fusion of cuisines. They can provide a twist on a classic and sometimes generate social media buzz. And they've been appearing more and more frequently on restaurant menus. Birria — a Mexican beef stew — has been served in the form of quesadillas, poutine, pasta, tacos, and ramen, including at sit-down restaurants as well as at taco chain Del Taco. In a report from November, the National Restaurant Association called birria a "social media darling" and said diners should expect to see it on menus in creative applications.

It’s one of eight courses in “Imaginary Futures,” a multisensory dining experience at Krasota. For its AI scenario, Krasota’s co-founders — digital artist Anton Nenashev, chef Vladimir Mukhin, and entrepreneur Boris Zarkov — ceded control to technology. “Any technology that interferes with the social aspects of dining will not succeed,” such as headsets or goggles, says Spence.

Over a week ago, Taquería El Califa de León was simply one of Mexico City’s nearly 11,000 registered taco shops, though there are undoubtedly many more that aren’t. But it was mostly a locally known taco stand. That day, the Michelin Guide, the world’s most widely recognized arbiter of fine dining, released its first Mexican edition. Of the 18 establishments in Mexico awarded at least one Michelin star, many of them fancy restaurants, El Califa de León was the only street-food stand. (Outdoor food stands in other parts of the world have been awarded Michelin stars.)

Tire-manufacturing brothers André and Édouard Michelin released the first Michelin Guide in 1900 in an attempt to encourage motorists to try out restaurants around France. Another surprise Michelin award came in April when Disney World's Victoria & Albert's restaurant — which it calls its "culinary crown jewel" — earned a coveted star. In its review of the restaurant, the Michelin Guide said: "This restaurant is by no means an easy reservation, but the reward is a kind of magic rarely seen these days."

CNN —A tiny, no frills taco stand in Mexico with just four items on its menu has been awarded a star by the coveted Michelin Guide. Taquería El Califa de León, located in the San Rafael neighborhood of Mexico City, was among the establishments to garner either one or two stars in the first ever Michelin Guide Mexico, published earlier this week, making it the first Mexican taco stand to receive the honor. Fernando Llano/AP“The secret is the simplicity of our taco,” Rivera Martínez told the Associated Press. “With meat and tortillas of this caliber, the duo of house-made salsas is hardly even necessary,” says the Michelin Guide.
