For a brief moment, after Celine canceled its men’s wear show in Paris because of the recent unrest in France, there were concerns about whether last week’s couture shows would go as planned. Thom Browne, for his debut couture show, turned an opera house into a wonderland full of fantastical suiting. Valentino showed ethereal gowns against the backdrop of the Château de Chantilly, a palatial property outside Paris and one of the most extraordinary venues I’ve ever photographed. In the crowds outside the shows, there was noticeably less peacocking. Others traded boxy clothes, which have dominated the style of guests and fans in recent years, for pieces with softer, more fluid silhouettes.

LOW-KEY LUXURY At the fall fashion shows, many designers proposed quiet, classic clothes rife with sophistication. From left: fall looks from Fendi, the Row and Loro Piana. This season put an end to that. Perhaps inspired by political and economic uncertainty, or maybe by the fact that women exist in the tangible world again, not just behind filtered screens, brands including Saint Laurent, the Row, Bottega Veneta and Fendi turned out exquisitely wearable, sometimes understated clothes. The shift in tone resonated with guests, some of whom are cautiously optimistic it might last beyond this crucial season for the brand.

Net losses for the year came in at $202 million, compared to a net income of $256 million in the prior fiscal year.
Adidas is locked in a court battle with fashion label Thom Browne over its use of stripes. The designer Thom Browne arrived in a shorts suit and striped sock on the trial's first day. A model's feet at a Thom Browne runway show in 2017, left, and Adidas socks and sneakers. The lawyer for Thom Browne argued that the two companies do not compete, as "Thom Browne is a luxury designer and Adidas is a sports brand," according to WWD. A pair of striped socks from Thom Browne can retail for $120, while similar crew socks from Adidas cost around $16 for a three-pack.
AFTER THREE YEARS of upheaval and change, many women are realizing their old wardrobes are no longer a good fit—both literally and figuratively—for their post-pandemic selves. Here, two writers of different generations seek guidance on suiting up for their next chapters. The Woman in her 40s: Baze MpinjaA couple of months ago, I went to a sample sale for the first time since the pandemic began. For instance: While most of my fellow crazed shoppers were throwing elbows to snag sky-high pumps, I only had eyes for kitten heels. Apparently, after years of working from home in cozy socks or sneakers, I’m no longer interested in suffering for chic footwear—even if I can get it at a deep discount.

But protocols failed to match reality at the Niagara Falls plant, according to more than a dozen workers. In addition to those signature diseases, which are rare even among asbestos workers, the tiny strands can harm the body in other ways. In the 15 years that followed, congressional attempts to ban asbestos would continue to fall short. OSHA declined to make an official available for an on-the-record interview or comment on ProPublica's findings at the Niagara Falls plant. At the OxyChem plant in Wichita, union president Keith Peacock said he was comfortable with the way asbestos was handled.
