CNN —An awards ceremony curveball indeed: Emma Stone, winner of the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in “Poor Things,” dealt with a sartorial snafu just moments before she took the stage to accept her trophy. “My dress is broken,” Stone appeared to mouth while en route to receive her Academy Award. “I think it happened during ‘I’m Just Ken,’” she explained, referencing Ryan Gosling’s performance of his song from the “Barbie” movie — and, presumably, some dance moves she’d indulged in (because who wouldn’t boogie down with Gosling should the opportunity present itself?). That goes for MBAs as much as MFAs, and it’s a lesson Lyft executives learned the hard way on Tuesday, when an errant zero sent its stock (briefly) to the stratosphere. The Lyft typo came in an earnings report that stated, incorrectly, that the company’s estimated gross margin would expand by 500 basis points, which would amount to a stunning five-percentage-point bump. The stock shot up more than 60% before Lyft’s CFO corrected the error on a call with analysts, bringing the stock back to Earth. With the error in the rear view, Lyft shares were up up 30% Wednesday, bolstered by stronger-than-expected earnings and a rosy outlook for future cash flows. “Look, it was a bad error, and that’s on me,” Lyft CEO David Risher told CNBC on Wednesday.

Washington CNN —A federal appeals court has expanded the scope of a ruling that limits the Biden administration’s communications with social media companies, saying it now also applies to a top US cybersecurity agency. Similar to the ruling last month, in which the appeals court said the federal government had “likely violated the First Amendment” when it leaned on platforms to moderate some content, the new ruling says CISA violates the Constitution. “CISA used its frequent interactions with social media platforms to push them to adopt more restrictive policies on censoring election-related speech,” the three-judge panel wrote. But the court’s new ruling was only modified to add CISA as an enjoined entity. The judges said they were pausing their new injunction for 10 days, and the Biden administration has the option of asking the Supreme Court to issue a more lasting pause on the modified ruling.

On Tuesday, $155 billion chip giant Intel (INTC.O) inked a new partnership with Tower Semiconductor (TSEM.TA), which Intel boss Pat Gelsinger recently gave up on acquiring for $5 billion. The deal will see Tower spend $300 million on equipment at Intel’s New Mexico campus, bolstering Gelsinger’s nascent chip-manufacturing-for-hire services. Intel ended its year-and-a-half-long quest to acquire Tower in August, after failing to win sign-off from Chinese antitrust enforcers. Signed in February 2022, the deal was aimed at strengthening Intel’s pivot into manufacturing chips designed by others by bringing in Tower’s know-how. By signing up Tower as a partner, Gelsinger wins a chunk of its business without the trouble of competition roadblocks.

Walmart accidentally taxed some Alabama customers twice after its system mixed up a tax change. Alabama's sales and use tax base rate on food, which is added to varying local tax rates, was cut from 4% to 3% on Friday. In a statement to NBC 15 News, Walmart confirmed that some of its customers and Sam's Club members had been charged two rates of tax. It's not the first time a sales tax change has caused havoc in Walmart stores.

The retailer's second-quarter sales, however, dropped 5%, partly due to the fallout of a backlash against its Pride merchandise in May. Target now expects annual comparable sales to decline in the mid-single digit range compared to its prior forecast of low-single digit decline to a low-single digit increase. It expects 2023 adjusted profit per share between $7 to $8, compared with the prior range of $7.75 to $8.75. On an adjusted basis, Target earned $1.80 per share in the quarter ended July 29, beating expectations of $1.39.
