Calmer winds helped California firefighters battle the once out-of-control Mountain Fire on Friday as they continued to defend homes from the destructive blaze, officials said. CNN —Investigators in Wisconsin used genetic genealogy to solve a 50-year-old cold case this week, charging an 84-year-old Minnesota man with killing a woman who was found dead in 1974, authorities said. “This is a huge victory for our agency,” Bygd said at a Friday news conference. A police search is underway after 40 monkeys escaped from a research facility in South Carolina on Wednesday night. Police in Yemassee, Beaufort County, said the animals escaped from Alpha Genesis, a business that provides "nonhuman primate products and bio-research services," according to its website. It is also not known what trials the escaped monkeys were taking part in, nor whether they were exposed to any diseases. Alpha Genesis did not immediately respond to an overnight request for comment from NBC News. In 2022, three monkeys escaped following a traffic accident in rural Pennsylvania.

CNN —Residents in a small South Carolina town are finding themselves in the middle of a real-life game of Jumanji after 43 monkeys escaped Wednesday from a research facility. The rhesus macaque primates are all still on the loose after escaping from the Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center in Yemassee, town administrator Matthew Garnes said late Thursday morning. In an update shortly before noon, police said Alpha Genesis had eyes on the monkeys and were attempting to entice them with food. The young primates – all female and between 6 to 7 pounds – have never been used for testing and are too young to carry disease, police said. The Alpha Genesis test facility specializes in nonhuman primate research for the biomedical research community.

Arizona law enforcement alleges that an 18-year-old killed his mother and tried to report her as kidnapped to cover up her death. Less than 10 minutes later, the son of Mary Collier, 38, called 911 to report her supposed kidnapping. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said its deputies quickly confirmed that the body was Collier’s. Her son who made the call was identified as the suspect in her death, the sheriff’s office said. Lt. The Colbert County Sheriff’s Office in Alabama is asking the FBI to investigate a case involving a Black man whose body was found hanging in an abandoned home amid claims from his wife that his death was made to look like a suicide. The sheriff’s office requested the FBI's involvement in the death of 39-year-old Dennoriss Richardson, whose body was found in September, according to The Associated Press. The sheriff's office did not immediately respond Saturday to a request for comment from NBC News. "The FBI is aware of the tragic death of Dennoriss Richardson and takes allegations of federal law violations seriously," the FBI said in a statement. CNN —Ahead of potential civil unrest due to Tuesday’s presidential election, the National Guard is on standby as a precaution in several states, including Washington state and Oregon, where hundreds of ballots were damaged or destroyed after at least three ballot drop boxes were recently set on fire, officials say. Tina Kotek said in a statement Friday the National Guard is standing ready as political leaders call for peaceful protests, according to CNN affiliate KTVZ. A possible suspect wearing a Halloween Michael Myers mask was seen in the area of a Harris County, Texas, home where a man was found shot to death, authorities said Friday. That investigation is still open and active, the sheriff’s office said Friday. Authorities spoke with witnesses and viewed security videos from neighboring homes and learned that a possible suspect was seen walking in the area wearing a mask of Michael Myers, the fictional murderer from the "Halloween" movie series. Two children were found unharmed in the home, the sheriff's office said. Witnesses said that someone in the Myers mask walked up to the victim while he was in his garage and started shooting, local news station KHOU reported.

A Florida man has been charged after he allegedly left two improvised explosive devices in bathrooms at the Hard Rock Casino in Tampa. Eckley allegedly left two remote-controlled improvised explosive devices inside two male restrooms at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino on Sept. 29, FDLE Commissioner Mark Glass said in a news conference. One of the devices was found by an employee, who reported it, and the casino was eventually evacuated out of caution. The investigation found that three days prior to the discovery of the devices, a man was seen behaving “very suspiciously” at the casino on Sept. 25. The incident is still under investigation and it's not clear what motivated Eckley to leave the explosives in the casino.

A Montana man found slain in his tent earlier this month welcomed his alleged killer, a stranger, to his campsite and offered him a beer, the Gallatin County sheriff said Thursday. Abbey in a confession to detectives “stated, Dustin welcomed him to the campsite and offered him a beer,” Springer said. “The motives of this attack are still unknown.”DNA from a beer can found in the tent was matched by the state crime lab to Abbey, Springer said. He set up the camp on Oct. 10, a Thursday, and he planned to pick his girlfriend up from work the next night, Springer said. The girlfriend and a friend drove to the campsite on Oct. 12, a Saturday, and found Kjersem dead inside the tent, Springer said.
