The worst is over for CrowdStrike shareholders after steep losses tied to the major global IT outage caused by the company, CNBC's Jim Cramer predicted Monday. "I think it's the bottom" in CrowdStrike's stock price, Cramer said Monday on "Squawk on the Street," shortly before the opening bell. Shares of CrowdStrike were higher in the premarket and added more than 3% in early regular trading. CRWD mountain 2024-07-18 CrowdStrike since close July 18, day before global IT outage The declines "were not an overreaction because [the IT outage] was really bad," Cramer said. Earnings reports from Google’s parent company, Alphabet, and Tesla on Tuesday led to a drop in big tech stocks, while shares of smaller companies remained strong. The Russell 2000, an index of smaller companies that’s considered to be more tied to the ebb and flow of the economy, was down just 0.48 percent, in line with trading in recent weeks and indicating that shares of smaller companies stayed relatively robust. Investors were expecting perfection from the tech giants’ earnings reports, said Daniel Ives, a tech analyst at Wedbush Securities. “Investors are negatively reacting to any whiff of softness that we see from these big tech players,” he said. “I think it’s an overreaction after a massive run in tech stocks.”

"Buying because the stock price has gone down without knowing some of the underlying issues or without understanding some of the underlying activities, could be problematic," says Clark Bellin, president and chief investment officer at Bellwether Wealth. After all, a stock could take major losses and then soar to new heights à la Apple. But what about that same markdown in the price of that company's stock? You'll just have to figure some things out before you buy, says Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA. Rather than scrambling to do research, he says, keep a watchlist of stocks you'd be interested in buying at the right price.

Oil prices have gained about 4% this week, recovering from a sell-off last week on an OPEC+ plan to increase production in the fourth quarter. Oil market analysts generally viewed the sell-off as an overreaction. Lower interest rates typically boost economic growth and lift crude oil demand. The U.S. reported a surprise oil stockpile build of 3.7 million barrels, whereas analysts had expected inventories would fall. A growing number of analysts see the oil market tightening at least through the third quarter before loosening in 2025.

Crude oil futures Friday posted a third straight weekly loss on worries that demand may be softening even as OPEC+ plans to increase production. Here are Friday's closing energy prices:The OPEC+ production increase would start when refineries are down for fall maintenance and then ramp up as demand typically weakens heading into winter. Still, oil market analysts have widely described this week's sell-off as an overreaction, noting that the OPEC+ production increase does not start until October. In the meantime, oil balances should tighten as the cuts remain in place during the summer driving season when demand typically rises, according to JPMorgan. JPMorgan and Barclays have said oil demand growth remains relatively healthy.

CNN —Microsoft’s buzziest new AI feature is raising concerns that it could potentially be misused in the wrong hands. It’s different from a keyword search; the tool regularly saves screenshots of the user’s screen and stores them directly on the device. It then uses AI to process the data and make it searchable. Jen Golbeck – a professor of AI at the University of Maryland who focuses on privacy – said the recall feature could pose a potential “nightmare” if the device falls into the wrong hands. Still, Michela Menting, a senior research director at ABI Research, believes the feature is a “step backwards” for privacy.

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesLONDON — U.K. inflation could be about to hit a major milestone, with some forecasting that a sharp fall in the April print will take the headline rate below the Bank of England's 2% target. That would represent a plunge from the current level of 3.2% and could "make or break" a June interest rate cut, economists say. Ashley Webb, U.K. economist at Capital Economics, said that if the headline rate does fall below 2% in April, as he expects, it would be "momentous." "This will be crucial in determining whether the first interest rate cut from 5.25% will happen in June (as we expect) or in August. We think inflation will fall further, perhaps even to 1.0% later this year," Webb said in a Friday note.

Stress at work is inevitable — but embracing it can help you become stronger, smarter and happier, according to one Ivy League expert. According to Wiens, the "most underrated" skill successful people use to stave off burnout is shifting their stress response from "fight-or-flight" to "challenge." You're probably familiar with fight-or-flight, the stress response that can happen when you encounter a perceived threat. Wiens discovered this correlation by studying people thriving in high-stress environments, including business executives and police chiefs. Practicing this alternative response can boost your resilience in the face of stress and, in turn, lead to better health, emotional well-being and productivity at work – even during periods of high stress, Wiens discovered.

Club holding Wells Fargo will post quarterly results on Friday, followed by our other financial holding, Morgan Stanley, on Tuesday. In theory, higher borrowing costs mean Wells Fargo can generate more money from those interest-earning assets, but it's not that simple. It's hard to say with the fluid inflation and rate expectations whether Wells Fargo might change its NII outlook when it reports on Friday. Those alternatives will still be shared, American officials said, including in talks early this week between top Biden advisers and Israel’s defense minister. Hours after the delegation was canceled, Israeli minister Gideon Sa’ar submitted his resignation from the current government after not being included in the war cabinet. That led American officials to view Netanyahu’s statements Monday that the US had changed its position as peculiar and strange, the official said. Indeed, Biden’s advisers have been weighing various options for how to respond should the Rafah operation proceed. “We have no way to defeat Hamas without entering Rafah,” Netanyahu said after meetings at the end of last week with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Kathy Hochul announced on Wednesday that hundreds of National Guard soldiers would be deployed to patrol the New York City subway system and check riders’ bags, her office made an adjustment: Soldiers searching bags would not carry long guns. The change, which was first reported by The Daily News, was ordered by Ms. Hochul on Wednesday for implementation on Thursday, according to a spokesman for the governor. Ms. Hochul issued a directive that National Guard members would be prohibited from carrying long guns at bag-check stations, he said. Soldiers not working at the stations would presumably be allowed to carry them. “It will, unfortunately, create a perfect storm for tension, escalation and further criminalization of Black and brown New Yorkers.”
