He's the latest former DeSantis ally to take a shot at the governor's struggling presidential campaign. Gruters told The Washington Post that he "fully expected the downfall" of DeSantis' campaign. DeSantis' campaign has clearly struggled early on. Rep. Byron Donalds, another former DeSantis ally who also endorsed Trump, said he knew that DeSantis just didn't excel at building relationships. A representative for DeSantis' campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Special counsel Jack Smith's second indictment against Trump alleges he unlawfully tried to overturn his election loss to President Joe Biden in the 2020 election. One day earlier, a former business partner of Hunter Biden testified that the younger Biden put his father on the phone during business meetings about 20 times, according to U.S. House members. Numerous GOP lawmakers and other supporters of Trump were quick to link the timing of Archer's testimony to Smith's indictment. White House spokesman Ian Sams posted that Archer "appears to have actually testified that President Biden wasn't involved and didn't discuss their business dealings. As they did following his first federal indictment in June, Trump's defenders attacked Smith and questioned his credibility.

[1/2] Devon Archer, a former Hunter Biden business associate, arrives for a deposition before the House Oversight and Accountability Committee at the O'Neill House Office Building in Washington, U.S., July 31, 2023. But Democratic Representative Dan Goldman, who attended the interview, told reporters Archer provided no evidence of wrongdoing by the elder Biden. "There is no evidence that anyone other than Hunter Biden received any money in connection with the business transactions with Devon Archer," Goldman said. Republican Representative Andy Biggs, who has already co-sponsored legislation to impeach President Biden, said Archer's testimony implicated the president. "Archer talked about the 'big guy' and how Hunter Biden always said, 'We need to talk to my guy,'" Biggs told reporters.

Meme investors could spoil AMC’s next act

AMC is already fighting another lawsuit over its attempt to convert preferred stock into common shares, a novel scheme to avoid getting investors’ approval for share sales. It fits with other forays since AMC became a retail-favorite meme stock – like buying into a gold miner – that seem to disregard conventional governance niceties. Attracting a rush of retail traders means there are plenty of investors to call foul. If their push against the preferred stock gambit succeeds, AMC could struggle to raise new funds, which bodes poorly for repaying its $5 billion in debt. It turns out that, for a meme stock’s final act, the audience starts throwing tomatoes.

CNN —Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was once shunned by the United States. But in the nine years since that ban was lifted, Modi has been progressively embraced by the White House – now more than ever. Modi will also lead celebrations for the International Day of Yoga at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Wednesday, illustrating the influence of India’s soft power. US President Joe Biden meets with Modi during the Quad leaders summit at Kantei Palace in Tokyo, on May 24, 2022. Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin pose for photographs at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, India, on December 6, 2021.

How Democrats Can Win Workers

Today, I’ll be writing about what Democrats might do about the problem, focusing on a new YouGov poll, conducted as part of the Center for Working-Class Politics study. A key point is that even modest shifts in the working-class vote can decide elections. If President Biden wins 50 percent of the non-college vote next year, he will almost certainly be re-elected. But candidate messages that explicitly mentioned race were unpopular. Democrats who have won difficult recent elections, including both progressives and moderates, have often presented a blue-collar image.

But all the campus adventures amount to so much throat-clearing before he gets to the gravamen of his argument. In the introduction, he gives a hint at what’s to come: “What is needed — and what most ordinary people instinctively seek — is stability, order, continuity and a sense of gratitude for the past and obligation toward the future. They have been too degraded by an “invasive progressive tyranny” to yield anything other than a populist movement that is “untutored and ill led,” he writes, alluding to Trump. Deneen spends much of “Regime Change” taking cover in gauzy abstractions, so it’s the occasional blunt-force statement like this that reveals what he would ultimately like to see. There is a lot about “the past” in this book and barely any actual history.

Dr. Chatbot will see you now

Almost invariably, the chatbot answers were rated as three or four times as reliable as the ones from the poor wee humans. But here's the most striking part: The chatbot answers, on average, were rated seven times as empathetic as the ones from humans. It's as if the unfeeling android Mr. Data figured out how to convincingly emulate Dr. Crusher's comforting bedside manner. Give those medical chatbots access to people's individual medical records, and they could offer more precisely directed advice. Healthcare AI startups will want the cheapest versions with the most financial bang, which won't necessarily have the best patient outcomes.

BRASILIA, May 17 (Reuters) - Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's focus on foreign policy and a relentless schedule of trips abroad risks distracting him from tackling thorny domestic issues, two senior allies of the leftist president told Reuters. But so far, less than six months into his third term, he has made twice as many foreign trips as he did at the start of his first presidency in 2003. By comparison, fellow leftist President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of Mexico, who skipped the coronation, has made five foreign trips since taking office in 2018. "You have to focus on decisive issues," the aide said, citing a need for higher economic growth and job creation. Marco Feliciano, a pro-Bolsonaro lawmaker in the lower house, said "international trips are part of the presidential agenda, but not at the beginning of the government ...
New York CNN —All niceties have been thrown out the window as DirecTV finds itself ensnared in an ugly carriage dispute with Newsmax. The satellite carrier, which refuses to buckle to pressure and pay millions of dollars to broadcast the network’s low-rated programming, unleashed on the right-wing talk channel on Tuesday. At the center of the dispute: Newsmax has demanded DirecTV pay millions in carriage fees to continue including the channel in its lineup. They’ve accused DirecTV — which just added another right-wing talk channel to its lineup — of censoring conservative voices. Newsmax, led by Chris Ruddy, who is well-connected in GOP circles, has in recent weeks used its platform and political power to pressure DirecTV into paying up.
But it fell well short on Friday as they went behind 2-0 to Argentina in the second half at the Lusail Stadium. Van Gaal had to abandon all niceties and throw on two imposing centre forwards, looking to find them in a 'hit and hope' fashion. Winning at all costs, even if ugly, had been Van Gaal's mantra through the tournament, but left many Dutch purists upset. Never short on self-confidence, Van Gaal brushed aside the critics with an insistence he knew best. But there will be an overriding feeling that he got it wrong and that the young Dutch side did not play to their strengths.
Why most men don’t have enough close friends

And those who do maintain friendships with other men say they tend to have lower levels of emotional intimacy than women report. Research has shown close friendships protect our mental and physical health, she added. Assumptions 27 years later might be different, but social pressures remain that make it difficult for men to express the vulnerability and intimacy needed for close friendships, Sileo said. Men who were more emotionally restricted, focused on power and who scored high on surveys measuring homophobia are less likely to have intimate and close friendships, he said. “If you can have a handful of friends that are quality, that’s better than having a slew of friends.”
