Sen. Joe Manchin, the West Virginia Democrat who often bucked party leadership and flirted recently with leaving the party altogether, announced he would not seek reelection on Thursday in a blow to Democrats’ chances of retaining the seat. “After months of deliberation and long conversations with my family, I believe in my heart of hearts that I’ve accomplished what I set out to do for West Virginia,” Manchin said in a video statement posted on social media. “I have made one of the toughest decisions of my life and decided that I will not be running for reelection to the United States Senate.”Manchin, 76, was first elected to the Senate in 2010, after serving as the governor of West Virginia. He faced tough reelection prospects next year in the deep red state that had led many to question whether he would bow out of the race. And recent teasing about leaving the party or launching a third-party bid for the presidency added to the intrigue.

I’ve watched U.S. warplanes attack Afghanistan; barely escaped a direct strike from a Russian MiG in Georgia, and lived for weeks under relentless Israeli bombardment in Lebanon. Israel has so far killed more than 8,000 people, the Gaza Health Ministry said, more than 40 percent of them children. But having spent time under bombardment, and having reported in Gaza, I have no time for these explanations. If we are to believe the Israeli political and military leadership’s own words — and I think we should — the assault on Gaza was driven, first, by straightforward vengeance. We could find out with a cease-fire, but they say we can’t ask for a cease-fire.

To the Editor:Re “Student Letter Hits Fault Line in Free Speech” (front page, Oct. 19):The unequivocal support for Hamas by some students at elite colleges is irksome and puzzling. These bright young students claim to value tolerance and inclusion while objecting to capital punishment. Carla S. SchickOakland, Calif. To the Editor:It strikes me that the students at Harvard who complain about being “doxxed” misunderstand the concept of free speech. New York CNN —Former US Ambassador Jon Huntsman blasted the University of Pennsylvania’s response to antisemitism and is promising to halt his family’s donations to the prestigious university. The strong criticism from Huntsman, a 1987 graduate and former UPenn trustee, comes amid a growing backlash from donors and trustees. The Huntsman family has been such prominent supporters of UPenn that the Huntsman name is on the main Wharton School building. The controversy began last month when a multiday event took place on campus at UPenn called the Palestine Writes Literature Festival. Magill, UPenn’s president, is trying to quell the backlash and conceded the response to the Palestine Writes Literature Festival was inadequate.

New York CNN —Wall Street CEO Marc Rowan is calling for the leaders of the University of Pennsylvania to resign and donors to close their checkbooks over an alleged failure to condemn antisemitism and hate. Words of hate and violence must be met with clear, reasoned condemnation, rooted in morality from those in positions of authority,” Rowan wrote. Rowan, whose fortune is estimated by Forbes to be nearly $6 billion, is one of the university’s wealthiest donors and supporters. But the billionaire CEO argues UPenn leaders failed to condemn the “hate-filled” Palestine Writes Literature Festival, a multi-day event that took place at the university’s campus last month. “We unequivocally – and emphatically – condemn antisemitism as antithetical to our institutional values,” the UPenn leaders wrote.

UAW expands strike, hitting Ford’s largest factory

CNN —The United Auto Workers union surprised Ford with a major escalation of its strike, ordering workers off the job at the company’s largest plant. “We have been crystal clear, and we have waited long enough, but Ford has not gotten the message,” said UAW President Shawn Fain. He said that the union wanted a different offer from Ford from what it had presented before. The UAW has been on strike against not only Ford, but also General Motors and Stellantis, since September 15. By hitting the Kentucky Truck Plant, the union is going after a much more profitable part of Ford’s line-up.

McCarthy’s Centrist Path Out of a Government Shutdown

But with a funding bill seemingly out of reach, all signs suggest that those entrenched positions will result in a long and painful government shutdown. And it may be enough to arouse a dormant group of centrists whose own interests favor a functional legislative branch. And adding to McCarthy’s bind is the pledge that conservatives will call for his ouster should he work with Democrats to avoid a shutdown. Moderate Republicans, flanked by House Democrats, seize upon the moment. Meanwhile, another possible path, however unlikely, appears open to willing Democrats and centrist Republicans.

The plane that listed Mr. Prigozhin as a passenger left Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport on Wednesday at about 6 p.m. local time, bound for St. Petersburg. The paint and a partial registration number, RA-02795, visible on the aircraft match a jet that Mr. Prigozhin is known to use. Was Mr. Prigozhin killed? New York CNN —On Tuesday, the Teamsters union will announce if their 340,000 members at UPS have ratified a new contract or if they rejected it, reviving the risk of a crippling nationwide strike. The company is calling it a win for the union members, for the company and for its customers. While rank and file at UPS voted down a deal five years ago, a majority did not participate in that ratification process. There are numerous examples in recent years of rank-and-file union members voting down deals recommended by their leadership and sometimes forcing a strike. Hong Kong CNN —China has unveiled a sweeping foreign relations law enshrining its right to impose “countermeasures” against actions that it deems a threat – in Beijing’s latest bid to bolster its position amid strained relations with the West. “This is the first comprehensive foreign relations law … but it (reads) more like Xi Jinping’s foreign policy declaration,” Zhao said, adding that its release comes at a moment when Xi is focused on countering what it sees as US efforts to contain China. “The party, not the government, runs China’s foreign relations. The law also includes China’s pledge to promote “high-level opening-up” of its economy, development of foreign trade and and encouraging and legally protecting foreign investment. In recent months, a campaign against consulting and due diligence firms has unnerved foreign businesses in China.

Can the U.S. See the Truth About China?

Photo illustration by Bráulio Amado Talk Can the U.S. See the Truth About China? To see China solely as trying to displace the United States is only going to stoke more fears. The Chinese people believe that a substantially weakened Russia might not be in the interest of China, because if there were the sense that the United States needed to seek out an opponent, China would be next. And then also, the United States thinks that China wants to displace it. The industrial espionage stems from a lack of appreciation from the start of intellectual property, and the United States, by pushing China to do more intellectual-property protection, is actually good for China.
Last week, local governments across China began to convene for annual legislative sessions laying out their respective policy goals for the year. Economists estimated the entire year’s deficit could hit a record 10 trillion yuan ($1.4 trillion) in 2022. Beijing, the nation’s capital, said Sunday that it had spent nearly 30 billion yuan ($4.5 billion) last year on preventing and controlling Covid. The city didn’t reveal its 2021 Covid spending. During the past three years, the bills amounted to 30.5 billion yuan ($4.6 billion.)

More than 7,000 nurses go on strike in New York City
  + stars: | 2023-01-09 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Jan 9 (Reuters) - Thousands of nurses at two New York City hospitals went on strike on Monday after contract negotiations stalled over pay and staffing levels, a move that caused one of the facilities to postpone procedures and appointments. The walkout involves more than 7,000 nurses at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx and Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, the New York State Nurses Association said in a statement. "These nurses are dedicated professionals who provide quality patient care under unimaginable conditions," New York State AFL-CIO president Mario Cilento said. Montefiore Medical Center also said it was committed to create over 170 new nursing positions. Since beginning contract negotiations four months ago, the union had been able to reach agreements or new contracts for nurses at seven other New York City hospitals.

Today, the US consumes only a fraction of that Saudi oil, and China is Saudi Arabia’s biggest client and trading partner. Over the last year, Gulf Arab countries appear to have ramped up their independent-minded policy.
CNN —Spanning decades, “Unveiled: Surviving La Luz Del Mundo” is another #MeToo story, this time on a disturbingly epic scale, exploring alleged sexual abuse that occurred across generations in a Guadalajara, Mexico-based mega-church, and the victims that eventually rose up to speak out. Founded in 1926, La Luz Del Mundo (Spanish for “The Light of the World”) says it has branches around the world, carrying the word of God from a designated apostle chosen from the ranks of its guiding family. CNN has reached out to La Luz Del Mundo for comment. While HBO’s poster for “Unveiled” features the line, “Bringing the truth into the light,” time will tell whether that light turns out to be the best disinfectant. “Unveiled: Surviving La Luz Del Mundo” premieres December 6 at 9 p.m.
But agency veterans, outside public health officials, and workplace organization experts said the current workplace structure could be a major barrier to that goal. As of early 2020, much of the workforce of the FDA and the National Institutes of Health was working remotely. Today, the NIH is mostly back in the office, but the FDA said many of its employees continue to work remotely when possible. Many people have fled the U.S. public health workforce in recent years, burned out from the covid-19 response. Benjamin said the CDC would likely have made its pandemic stumbles even if staffers hadn’t been working remotely.

Credit Suisse Chief Executive Ulrich Körner is reshaping the $11 billion group to put some bad years and big losses firmly in the past. Credit Suisse is setting up joint ventures between CS First Boston and the parent’s trading and wealth management businesses, according to a person familiar with the matter. An added complication is that CS First Boston bankers could be getting paid in their own division’s stock, rather than Credit Suisse shares. Michael Klein will step down from the Credit Suisse board of directors to help launch CS First Boston, the bank said.
