As Dwight progressed through the Air Force, he was handpicked by President John F. Kennedy’s White House to join Chuck Yeager’s test pilot program at Edwards Air Force Base in California’s Mojave Desert. That fabled astronaut breeding ground, site of “The Right Stuff,” might have turned Dwight into one of the most famous Americans and the first Black man in space. Dwight astronaut future took a more drastic turn when Kennedy was assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963. “Everybody was wondering, ‘What’s going to happen with Dwight?’" says Dwight. To the Black astronauts who followed in his footsteps, Dwight braved their path.

For Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, the conflict in Gaza has come home. Protesters angry over Israel’s assault on Gaza have become a regular presence outside Mr. Blinken’s residence in Northern Virginia, with some camping out for days in roadside tents. Palestinian flags and handmade signs express their fury at a diplomat who has become the face of President Biden’s policy toward the conflict. Passing cars drove over the words “Secretary of genocide” scrawled along the road in pastel chalk colors. They have “braved cold temperatures, winds and rain, 24 hours a day, to plead with Blinken” to support an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, the statement said.

BRUSSELS (AP) — Convoys with hundreds of angry farmers driving heavy-duty tractors advanced toward European Union headquarters, bent on getting their complaints about excessive costs, rules and bureaucracy heard by EU leaders at a summit Thursday. Even if the EU summit was supposed to be laser-focused on providing Ukraine financial aid for its war against invading Russia, the farmers were likely to squeeze their plight onto the informal agenda of the 27 leaders too. Jean-Francois Ricker, a farmer from southern Belgium, braved the winter night close to EU headquarters and said he expected 1,000 to 1,400 vehicles. Farmers coming to Brussels on Thursday have been insisting their protest will be peaceful and security forces have handled the protests lightly so far. I think we are addressing two very important (concerns) of them right now,” European Commission Vice President Maroš Šefčovič said.

Ukrainian officials say tens of thousands of people were killed, but Mariupol's actual death toll remains unknown. But Iowa caucusgoers and New Hampshire primary voters also exposed noticeable chinks in Trump’s electoral armor and worrying general election headwinds that he and his campaign will face in the coming months. Yes, Trump handily won a head-to-head matchup in a New Hampshire primary contest that wasn’t limited to just Republicans. “Twenty percent of GOP voters will not vote for him,” the Republican member told CNN. Visibly miffed by Haley’s conviction to continue on after New Hampshire, Trump spent the evening lashing out at her online and trashing her appearance in his victory speech. Of the 30% of New Hampshire GOP primary voters who named immigration as their top concern, nearly 8 in 10 voted for Trump, according to CNN’s exit poll.

Protests of up to 30,000 people have already taken place in cities including Berlin, Leipzig, Rostock, Essen and Cologne. Demonstrators gathered outside the capital’s redbrick town hall on Wednesday holding placards reading “Nazis out” and chanting slogans against far-right AfD politician Björn Höcke. The gathering of AfD members, neo-Nazis and other far-right extremists took place at a lakeside hotel outside the city of Potsdam on November 25. The AfD told CNN that the two “separated with mutual agreement.”However, the idea of a “mass deportation plan” was openly supported by one AfD representative in the state of Brandenberg. After much preparation, the 12-year-old's small scene turned into a big problem among school officials in Wheatland, Wyoming. Located on the eastern Wyoming plains, Wheatland is a small farming and ranching community with about 3,500 residents. There are few restaurants, no department stores — not even a local Walmart — and few performance venues besides Wheatland High School. "Unless you’re super closed-minded, I don’t see why you would do that.”Drama coach Stephanie Bradley, who also attended the high school, challenged the decision. “Most people in this part of Wyoming don’t come out early," Bradley said of LGBTQ+ teens on the state's rural plains.

Nakita Bell, who is currently renting in Detroit, said the recent drop in rates prompted her to consider buying. Lower rates are also giving some current homeowners an opportunity to save money. Winter turned its icy glare on the U.S. this week, blanketing cities and states from east to west with snow and sending temperatures into an Arctic spiral. Heavy lake-effect snow shut down city hall, canceled school in several districts and led to travel bans across multiple suburbs. Blades of grass hardened into icicles as snow fell and temperatures dropped in Houston, Texas. Pedestrians braved the cold while walking in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, and children sailed down snow drifts at the U.S. Capitol in Washington. And steam rising off of Lake Michigan in Chicago drew would-be photographers, bundled up and enjoying the view as winter settled in.

Two-thirds of Republican voters don’t think President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory was legitimate, despite all evidence to the contrary. Iowa caucusgoers, unlike most of the country, overwhelmingly support banning most or all abortions nationwide. Iowa voters could be asked on the general election ballot to make clear there is no right to abortion guaranteed in their state’s constitution. While Trump held a commanding lead among Iowa caucusgoers without college degrees, college graduates were more closely divided among Trump, former South Carolina Gov. INDIANOLA, Iowa—As he stood on the brink of a seemingly unstoppable march to another Republican presidential nomination, Donald Trump couldn’t stop thinking about all the ways he had been betrayed. “Do you think this is fun? Actually?” the former president mused. “It’s not fun,” he said, “but we’re getting our point across.”The hundreds of devoted supporters who had braved subzero temperatures Sunday to cram into a second-floor auditorium at the Simpson College student union, half an hour south of Des Moines, hung on Trump’s every word as he riffed for nearly two hours. The crowd was dotted with white caps bearing the words “TRUMP CAUCUS CAPTAIN” in embroidered gold letters, and the former president wore one himself—a totem of the ruthlessly professional organization that Trump’s campaign has built, a far cry from the slapdash operation that failed to deliver him Iowa in early 2016.

Plunging temperatures have put much of the country in a deep freeze this holiday weekend, combining with snow, freezing rain, ice or gusty winds in some places to endanger nearly 100 million people from Northern California to coastal Maine. Forecasters said hundreds of records gauging the cold could be broken this week, as frigid air gripped a huge swath of the nation, including southern cities like Dallas, Memphis and Little Rock, Ark. Other places braced for sleet or snow, with Buffalo, N.Y., expecting up to two feet of snow. While some people hunkered down indoors, stocking up on food and firewood, others braved the cold to attend events for the Iowa caucuses, cheer on their favorite teams at the Chiefs-Dolphins N.F.L. playoff game or go skiing, among other activities.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley pushed across ice-cold Iowa Saturday to find voters open to an alternative to former President Donald Trump with just two days before the state's caucuses open the Republican primary calendar. DeSantis in particular is under great pressure in Iowa given his campaign's heavy bet on a strong finish in the caucuses. Courtney Raines, a special education teacher, came to hear Haley on Saturday morning and said she would try to see DeSantis later in the day. Opinion: A turning point in Ukraine

Last year, Ukraine passed legislation shifting its Christmas celebrations in line with many Western dates – a step to further distance itself from traditions commonly observed in Russia. As 2023 drew to a close, Russia launched the biggest air attack on Ukraine since the beginning of its full-scale invasion. The intensity and frequency of the attacks — on the back of reports that the Ukrainian counteroffensive is stalling and that western backers of Ukraine are holding back billions in funding — marks a major turning point in the war. While it’s impossible to put an exact number on Ukrainian war losses, anyone who visits the military portion of the Lychakiv Cemetary in Lviv can see that its expanded to almost maximum capacity. Ukraine scored a big win last week when the EU approved sanctions against Russia’s largest diamond producer, Alrosa, and its CEO.

All Eyes on Iowa as Republicans Ready for Caucuses

Known for his hard-line stances against abortion and LGBTQ+ priorities, DeSantis could get a boost from an Iowa Republican electorate that is unusually socially conservative. But even those plum endorsements aren't moving Iowa Republicans from the Trump camp. "Donald Trump is a lap ahead of the field," says former Iowa Republican Party co-chairman David Oman, a former chief of staff to two GOP Iowa governors and a prominent Haley supporter. The morning after an anticipated Trump win in the Iowa caucuses, a trial starts in New York to determine a second set of damages in a defamation case brought by writer E. Jean Carroll. And while the GOP winner is all but assured in Iowa, the state has still played a key role in the primary process.

China has decommissioned 70.45 gigawatts (GW) of coal-fired plants in the last decade, and is building far more renewable energy capacity than any other country. Coal power makes up about 70% of emissions in China, which has committed to being carbon neutral by 2060. After 2025, it is unclear whether China will approve new coal plants. But like many cities in China's coal country, coal revenues and jobs are an incentive to keep building. Several workers in Yulin expressed little doubt about whether new coal plants make economic and environmental sense.

2023 was a tumultuous year for the venture capital industry. This year, Business Insider asked the most important VCs across the US to name the most promising VCs in their cities. Business Insider also asked the general public and last year's rising stars who they thought should make the cut. “I don’t know what the hell I was doing wearing this.”But Chalamet has long relied on the wow factor of a shirtless suit for red carpet engagements. Chalamet's magenta velvet suit was from Tom Ford's latest collection. Jean-Paul Gaultier's "Pin Up Boys" from the 1996 season were early examples of the shirtless suit on the runway.
