Officials in North Carolina are searching for an inmate convicted of killing a 1-year-old girl after he escaped while being taken to a medical facility Tuesday in Hillsborough, North Carolina. Alston was convicted of first-degree murder in 2018 and sentenced to life behind bars, according to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction. The department said in a statement that Alston arrived about 7 a.m. Tuesday in a prison transport van to the University of North Carolina Medical Center's gastroenterology unit, where he had a medical appointment. Keith Acree, communications director for the Department of Adult Correction, told NBC affiliate WRAL of Raleigh that Alston was wearing a waist chain and handcuffs when he fled. Authorities established a perimeter covering at least a one-mile radius around the location of the escape, the Department of Adult Correction said.

The Archewell Foundation Parents’ Network aims to support affected families, including several whose children have taken their own lives as a result of online harm. During the CBS interview, the duchess was asked about the experience “that connects you to these families.”Appearing slightly uncomfortable, Meghan told interviewer Jane Pauley that she had not anticipated the question but understood why it was raised. Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, first revealed that she had experienced suicidal thoughts in an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021. In March 2019, the British royal family told social media users to show “courtesy, kindness and respect” when interacting with its online posts, after repeated cases of online abuse directed at Meghan and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. This followed Kensington Palace asking social media firms for help in combating the boom in abuse, which included sexist and racist comments.

And, fittingly, in the first full year of his reign, the British monarchy introduced a slew of measures to tackle its rising carbon emissions. The King’s two Bentleys will also be modified within the next year to run on biofuel, according to Britain’s PA Media. The Royal Household aims to transition to an “almost fully electric” fleet of vehicles eventually, the accounts said, without providing a target date. Whether biofuels used for vehicles reduce carbon emissions is contentious and depends on many factors, including their source. Crown Estate profits soared in the 2023-24 financial year to a record £1.1 billion ($1.4 billion), boosted by revenue from offshore wind projects.

London CNN —Arriving in a horse-drawn open carriage, King Charles III and Queen Camilla attended Royal Ascot in style this week. “We wish all the participants this week the very best of luck in seeking that unique thrill of a Royal Ascot winner.”Last year’s Royal Ascot saw an unlikely win for Charles, with his horse, Desert Hero, overcoming odds of 18 to 1 to land first place. Opinion | How John Roberts Lost His Court

A self-described documentary filmmaker, trolling a gala dinner for a gotcha moment by engaging Supreme Court justices in conversation and surreptitiously recording their words, arguably scored with Justice Samuel Alito when he told her he shared their stated goal of returning “our country to a place of godliness.”But with Chief Justice John Roberts, the undercover provocateur, Lauren Windsor, struck out. In response to her question about whether the court had an obligation to guide the country “toward a more moral path,” the chief justice shot back: “Would you want me to be in charge of putting the nation on a more moral path? That’s not for lawyers.” He went on: “And it’s not our job to do that. It’s our job to decide the cases as best we can.”Good for Chief Justice Roberts. Still, his admirable response to what he surely assumed was a private query invites a further thought.

The new portrait of Kate Middleton was taken in June at her home in Windsor. She added that she has been experiencing "good days and bad days." She wrote that,"On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well." Kate added that her treatment is ongoing but that she is starting to do "a little work from home" and that she hopes to attend more public engagements over the summer.

CNN —As a journalist and professor who teaches media ethics, I have long been against the kind of undercover secret recording activist Lauren Windsor made of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito and his wife, as well as Chief Justice John Roberts. Join us on Twitter and FacebookWhat Windsor discovered does not tell me as much as ProPublica and The New York Times have about the secrecy and shocking lack of ethics in the Supreme Court. But she did make me think Alito is even farther to the religious right than I thought. But while the approach was similar, Maryland has a law against secret recordings; two-person consent is required. But she broke no law in taking us behind closed doors and a little further into the mind of Alito.

She is at a private event, not open to journalists. She baits them with leading questions, trying to trap them into agreeing with her stated opinions. One reasonable interpretation is that Justice Alito was agreeing merely to be polite. Lauren Windsor is no brave agent working to trap a drug gang leader, or working in the resistance behind enemy lines. Most decent people of all political persuasions will be disgusted by her behavior and sympathize with the justices who were the victims of her dishonesty.

Advertisement"One side or the other is going to win," Alito told Windsor at the event, according to both outlets. Windsor told The Times that making the secret recordings was the only way she believed she could get answers to her questions. Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr.’s wife, Martha-Ann, recently told a woman posing as a conservative supporter that she wanted to fly a Catholic flag at the couple’s Virginia home in response to a Pride flag in her neighborhood. “You know what I want?” the justice’s wife said to the woman, Lauren Windsor, who secretly recorded the conversation during a black-tie event last week at the Supreme Court. “I want a Sacred Heart of Jesus flag because I have to look across the lagoon at the Pride flag for the next month.”But Ms. Alito said that after she suggested the Sacred Heart of Jesus flag as a retort to the symbol for L.G.B.T.Q. rights, her husband said, “Oh, please, don’t put up a flag.”She said that she had agreed, for now, but that she had told him that “when you are free of this nonsense,” “I’m putting it up and I’m going to send them a message every day, maybe every week. I’ll be changing the flags.”

Alito has long made clear his special solicitude for religious claims, whether before the court or on the flagpole outside his house. Still, it should shock us to hear him lay out his worldview so bluntly — and to a woman he never met before. It shows an utter lack of regard for the court’s delicate posture of neutrality in the constitutional system and American society. For a long time, Alito seemed like an outlier on the court, lobbing his sour, grievance-filled dissents from the sidelines. In that regard, this is really the Alito court.
