In fact, the Biden administration recently imposed its own set of tariffs, while extending ones first levied during the Trump administration. Take the tariffs the Trump Administration imposed on washing machines in 2018. The washing machine tariffs were part of a broad new tariff regime Trump imposed in an effort to protect American workers from anti-competitive Chinese trade practices. It resulted in what is generally viewed as a “trade war” involving retaliatory tariffs imposed on American goods. The White House gave a rationale similar to the Trump administration when it announced its tariffs.

After almost two decades of failed attempts to reopen, a landmark Upper West Side movie theater may be resurrected with a plan from a potential new buyer and celebrity support. They have formed the Upper West Side Cinema Center, a nonprofit corporation, whose website lists Martin Scorsese, Ethan Hawke and John Turturro as advisers, along with Bob Balaban, Griffin Dunne and the “American Psycho” director Mary Harron. (They would call it the Metro Cinema Center.) Representatives for Scorsese and Dunne confirmed their involvement. The proposal includes a five-screen theater dedicated to art house releases, classic film and special events; it would also have an education center and a cafe.

Because of its remote location, everything — including guest transfers, staff switching shifts, and even laundry runs — relies on motor-powered fishing boats. I booked a shuttle service from Costa Rica to Bocas Town and took a short taxi ride from the town center to the port. From there, the resort sent a boat to pick me up. Bob Newhart Holds Up.
  + stars: | 2024-07-18 | by ( Jason Zinoman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Bob Newhart, who died on Thursday at the age of 94, has been such a beloved giant of popular culture for so long that it’s easy to forget how unlikely it was that he became one of the founding fathers of stand-up comedy. Before basically inventing the hit stand-up special, with the 1960 Grammy-winning album “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart” — that doesn’t even count his pay-per-view event broadcast on Canadian television that some cite as the first filmed special — he was a soft-spoken accountant who had never done a set in a nightclub. That he made a classic with so little preparation is one of the great miracles in the history of comedy. A Roman Catholic from the west side of Chicago, Newhart came off as an entirely respectable example of Midwestern nice. Newhart brought his own kind of neurosis, a comedy rooted in nuanced deadpan and silence.

The Irony of Dr. Ruth

I will never forget the afternoon I spent, about 30 years ago, with Dr. Ruth Westheimer, interviewing her for a now-long-lost magazine article — my first ever. At 4-foot-7 Dr. Ruth used them to keep her feet from dangling when she sat down. Dr. Ruth’s office testified to her own engaged and connected life. Dr. Ruth, it turned out, was an avid and accomplished skier, a fact that should not have surprised me but did. Ruth Westheimer posed a perpetual contradiction: Her form never seemed to match her content.

A plan to build a casino over a sprawling rail yard on Manhattan’s Far West Side has a new, formidable opponent: parkgoers. Friends of the High Line, an influential nonprofit that operates the nearby 1.5-mile rail-line-turned-park, said Wednesday that it will muster supporters to attempt to thwart the development plan. The opponents of the casino proposal said the development would block views of the city from the High Line and create gusty winds and cast long shadows that could hurt local businesses. The proposal, submitted in February, would also create a 1,180-foot apartment tower, a 1,376-foot office building, a public school and day care. The development, in Hudson Yards, is being led by Related Companies, which built the eastern half of the site, and Wynn Resorts, a Las Vegas gambling giant.

Where to Watch July 4 Fireworks Around New York City

Members of the public can watch free of charge from spots along Hudson River and areas of New Jersey. Other fireworks shows will take place on Staten Island, in Coney Island, in Westchester County and at Jones Beach on Long Island. The Macy’s fireworks will be launched from barges positioned on the river between West 14th and West 34th Streets. The best spots to watch from will be in Manhattan along the West Side Highway between those streets, or across the river near the New Jersey waterfront in Hoboken, Weehawken and Jersey City. There are five places where the public can enter the West Side Highway to watch the show.

We Counted 22,252 Cars to See How Much Congestion Pricing Might Have Made This MorningToday would have been the first Monday of New York City’s congestion pricing plan. We sent 27 people to count vehicles manually at four bridges, four tunnels and nine streets where cars entered the business district. In total, we counted 22,252 cars, trucks, motorcycles and buses between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Monday. But it does give you a rough sense of scale: It’s a lot of cars, and a lot of money. had planned to use the congestion pricing revenue estimates to secure $15 billion in financing for subway upgrades.
