In today’s edition, we explore how Republicans are eyeing maintaining their current House majority and expanding their newfound Senate majority after Donald Trump's victory. But given Trump’s decisive victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, House Republicans are feeling bullish about their chances of preserving their slim majority. The party that will hold the majority in the House of Representatives in January 2025 has yet to be determined. Republican Tim Sheehy defeated Democratic Sen. Jon Tester in Montana, NBC News projected Wednesday morning, giving the GOP 52 Senate seats. And the races in Nevada between Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen and Republican Sam Brown and in Pennsylvania between Democratic Sen. Bob Casey and GOP challenger Dave McCormick are too close to call.

Vice President Kamala Harris and President-elect Donald Trump barreled into election night with cautious optimism that their respective campaigns would prevail. The polling averages showed a tight race that could be decided by razor-thin margins in key battleground states like Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. But as the first waves of returns streamed in, Trump’s advantages in the swing states quickly became clear — elating Republicans and demoralizing Democrats. The United States remains as bitterly divided as ever. Here, through photography and illustration, we explore a divided nation’s reactions to winning, losing and the future.

Next door in the 7th District, GOP state Rep. Ryan Mackenzie defeated Democratic Rep. Susan Wild, who had flipped a GOP seat in a 2018 special election. Republicans also flipped an open seat in Michigan’s 7th District, after Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin decided to run for the Senate. Because California is notoriously slow in counting ballots, some of the half-dozen hyper-competitive races there — critical to which party wins the House majority — likely will take days. In the 27th District, GOP Rep. Mike Garcia was narrowly beating Democrat George Whitesides with 65% of the vote in. In another California battleground race, NBC News projected Wednesday that GOP Rep. Kevin Kiley has defeated Democrat Jessica Morse.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Former President Donald Trump declared victory early Wednesday — NBC News has not projected a winner — after he took a series of swing states, including Pennsylvania. “I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honor of being elected your 47th president and your 45th president,” Trump told supporters at a victory party at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. “Because we are going to help our country heal.”Family and supporters surround former President Donald Trump at the Palm Beach Convention Center in West Palm Beach, Fla., early Wednesday. With his comeback victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in the books, Trump can rest easy. But he has not yet escaped from liability in a handful of high-profile civil cases, where he has been ordered to pay combined penalties of over $570 million. "In theory, there should be no effect" from Trump's election on those civil matters, former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani told CNBC. "It's well established that while a sitting president can't be prosecuted, he can face civil cases," Rahmani said. A state-level criminal case in Georgia, alleging Trump illegally meddled in that state's 2020 election, is also on ice.

Donald Trump declared victory in the presidential election early Wednesday morning, as the Republican led Kamala Harris in projected Electoral College votes in the presidential election. Neither Trump nor Harris has secured the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the White House, but after NBC News projected he will win Pennsylvania, the former president was just four electoral votes short of that goal. "I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honor of being elected your 47th president and your 45th president," Trump told supporters at the West Palm Beach, Florida, Convention Center, where he was flanked by family members and top members of his campaign. Former President Donald Trump bested Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. Trump won largely by breaching Democrats' "blue wall." The ex-president will now return to the White House after being ousted by Joe Biden in 2020. In defeating Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump will return to the White House after voters ousted him from office in the 2020 election. On the campaign trail, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump made a notable promise to retirees: No taxes on Social Security benefits. Any changes to Social Security would require at least 60 Senate votes, and Republicans would therefore need some Democratic support to pass those changes. "It's hard for me to imagine that Democrats would be willing to provide votes to get over that 60-vote threshold and weaken Social Security solvency," said Charles Blahous, senior research strategist at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, who has also served as a public trustee for Social Security and Medicare. The Trump campaign has pushed back on those findings, calling the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget "consistently wrong" in a statement to CNBC when the report was released. The Social Security trust fund used to help pay retirement benefits is projected to run out in 2033, according to the program's actuaries.

In the top-of-the-ticket presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump entered the day virtually deadlocked in national polling and surveys of the pivotal battleground states. Senate Democrats and House Republicans were hoping to hang on to thin majorities amid fierce competition. Trump planned to gather family, friends and staff at Mar-a-Lago, his resort in West Palm Beach, Florida, to monitor returns. Along with the rest of the country, Trump and Harris must now await the judgment of voters in the seven swing states — Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona and Nevada — to find out who is right. Senate Democrats are also playing defense in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada and Maryland.

As Election Day finally arrives, election officials, legal experts and researchers are bracing for a flood of disinformation and legal claims as vote counting begins. The final week of the campaign featured three dynamics that could lead to a protracted legal dispute if the results are close, legal experts said. Election experts say that if a clear winner emerges quickly and voting proceeds without major disruptions, large numbers of Americans may have faith in the results. A misleading advertisement from the Election Integrity Network says “The Glitch Is In” alongside a carousel of news coverage of such procedural Election Day issues. The Election Integrity Network’s founder, Cleta Mitchell, promotes her thousand-strong group as a kind of “national neighborhood watch.”Researchers also point to a new kind of infrastructure around documenting and sharing such rumors on Election Day.

New York CNN —Journalists from multiple news organizations have been denied credentials to former President Donald Trump’s election night watch event in West Palm Beach, Florida, in retaliation for their coverage of Trump’s campaign. Reporters at Politico, Axios, Puck, Voice of America and Mother Jones were among those denied credentials. Some, like Politico, had been previously granted access to the Tuesday night event only to have the decision reversed. But around the time Palmeri published a piece about “anxiety” within the Trump campaign, her credential was denied. The Trump campaign and his former administration have a history of revoking credentials for reporters, often in retribution over their coverage.

Routh’s attorneys noted the many instances when Trump has praised Cannon by name for her decision to toss the documents case, including during his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention this summer. “I have no control over what private citizens, members of the media, or public officials or candidates elect to say about me or my judicial rulings,” Cannon wrote Tuesday. “This case, like the prior cited cases involving former President Trump, were randomly assigned to me through the Clerk’s random case assignment system. Special counsel Jack Smith is currently appealing Cannon’s dismissal of the documents case. I maintain no ongoing personal relationship with the prosecutor, nor have I communicated with him in years,” she said.

"Defendant cites a series of factors which he believes, when viewed in their totality, create an appearance of partiality," Cannon wrote. "Accordingly, the Constitution and the federal recusal statute require Your Honor to recuse herself from this case." She also wrote that Routh's case, like two other ones involving Trump that she presided over, "were randomly assigned to me through the Clerk's random assignment system. "I will not be guided by highly inaccurate, uninformed, or speculative opinions to the contrary," Cannon wrote. Cannon brushed aside the speculation that Trump would elevate her to a higher judicial seat or to the U.S. Attorney General's Office.

Former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries and an alleged accomplice pleaded not guilty on Friday to sex trafficking and interstate prostitution charges. Jeffries’ romantic partner, Matthew Smith, who was also arrested on Tuesday on sex trafficking charges, wasn’t at the arraignment. Jeffries, Smith and Jacobson have each been hit with a single count of sex trafficking, as well as 15 counts of interstate prostitution tied to 15 alleged victims. They organized “sex events” in England, France, Italy, Morocco, St. Barts, New York City and the Hamptons for Jeffries, Smith and “others,” according to the indictment. Afterward, it was either Jacobson or the staff members who paid the men for attending the sex events, it says.

CNN —Former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Michael Jeffries pleaded not guilty to a 16-count indictment at his arraignment in a New York federal court on Friday. Jacobson was employed by Jeffries and Smith to recruit, interview and hire men to perform commercial sex acts for Jeffries and Smith, according to the indictment. His attorneys did not comment as they left the courtroom, and Jeffries is due back in court on December 12. Jefferies stepped down as CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch in December 2014, having run the company since 1992. “As we shared when the accusations were first made public in October 2023, we are appalled and disgusted by the alleged behavior of Mr. Jeffries, whose employment with Abercrombie & Fitch Co. ended nearly ten years ago,” Abercrombie & Fitch said in a statement Wednesday.
