The incident began on October 18 when a man called 911 pretending to be a distressed hiker, according to a Friday news release from the Monroe County Tennessee Sheriff’s Office. When first responders arrived at the scene in Tellico Plains, they found a dead man with identification belonging to Andrade, according to the sheriff’s office. Investigators discovered that Nicholas Wayne Hamlett, 45, of Alabama had been using Andrade’s identification and that he was wanted in Alabama on a parole violation, the sheriff’s office said. The sheriff’s office advises anyone with information about the case to share it with them and to call 911 if they see Hamlett. CNN has reached out to the Monroe County Tennessee Sheriff’s Office for more information.

DNA testing has revealed that a skull found decades ago in the wall of an Illinois house belonged to an 18-year-old woman who died just after the American Civil War. How did the skull end up in a wall in Illinois when Granger's body was buried in Indiana? "Grave robbing was quite common in that era as it was quite profitable. While the practice was illegal, the law forbidding grave robbing was not always enforced, Russell said. It was hugely controversial as a result, with riots and even murders of alleged perpetrators following some suspected grave robbing incidents.

CNN —Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been cleared from concussion protocol and is set to play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters Friday, emphasizing that medical experts have expressed support for the star to return. He had been placed on the injured reserve list and was eligible to return to play this week provided he cleared protocol. The Dolphins went 1-3 without their signal caller, as the offense averaged a league-low 8.75 points per game during his absence. McDaniel was asked Wednesday why Tagovailoa was placed on the injured reserve list if the quarterback said he was symptom-free. Esther Granger was identified by the Kane County Coroner’s Office on Thursday as the woman whose skull was found in 1978, but she died more than 150 years earlier. The skull was turned back into the police and officials linked this skull to the 1978 report, which renewed the investigation. In 2023, Kane County officials contacted Othram, a Texas company that works on solving cold cases across the country, to assist with further DNA testing. Officials contacted Granger’s great-great grandson, Wayne Svilar, and he submitted his DNA for testing, which was a match, he said during Thursday’s news conference. Svilar, 69, said he did not believe the news when he was first contacted by county officials in April about his great-great grandmother.

CNN —Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since suffering another concussion in the game against the Buffalo Bills last month. Dolphins’ star wide receiver, Tyreek Hill, was very excited, saying having Tagovailoa back almost made him cry. “Just having him in the lineup, having him call the plays, having him direct the offense, just hearing his voice. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was asked before practice Wednesday why Tagovailoa was placed on the reserve/Injured list if the quarterback said he was symptom-free. “During this stretch where he hasn’t been on the field, he’s in a more powerful place with the team,” McDaniel said.

As Election Day approaches, the campaigns are putting significant time and attention toward courting Black men, seen as a crucial — and potentially movable — voting bloc in a tight presidential race. However, that number drops to 68% for Black men under 50, compared to 21% who support Trump. “It’s very important to not operate from the assumption that Black men are in anybody’s pocket,” she said during an interview with the National Association of Black Journalists in September. For Trump’s part, efforts to reach Black men voters through campaign surrogates or Trump himself have lessened in recent months. Bartell also pointed to Kevin Cooper, a Black man on death row for killing a white family, as well as marijuana convictions of Black men.

Donald Trump on Friday dismissed more questions about whether he would release his current medical records, doubling down on refusing to provide a health update even as Kamala Harris works to sow doubts about his fitness for the presidency. The 78-year-old Republican nominee, when asked if he will release his health records, suggested that he has already shared enough information about his medical status. "Yeah, my health records – I've done five exams over the last four years. Trump told CBS News in August that he would "very gladly" release his medical records, but his campaign has not done so. Asian American evangelicals are a diverse, evolving group of voters increasingly seeking to distinguish themselves from their white counterparts. According to a 2023 Pew Research Center survey, about a third of Asian American adults identify as Christian. “The Asian American Christian’s identity is the convergence of cultural experience, historical background and core theological transformation,” Kim said. “I do hope and pray Asian American Christians take their civic responsibility seriously,” he said. One more thing Southern California is known for: earthquakes. While the San Andreas is the most famous, scientists know it’s not the only fault that can produce a powerful earthquake in Southern California. Residents clean up in the Van Nuys neighborhood following the 1994 Northridge earthquake in Los Angeles on January 17, 1994. Many newcomers have no idea the havoc a big earthquake can wreak, including young Angelinos who grew up in Southern California‘s quiet times. “We need to be prepared, because we could have an earthquake that’s pretty big at any time,” Husker said.

CNN —China flew a record number of fighter jets and other warplanes around Taiwan during its large-scale military drills on Monday, the island’s Defense Ministry said. No Chinese warplanes were spotted entering Taiwan’s sovereign airspace, a step that would be considered a major escalation. While not directly comparable, the spike in Chinese warplanes on Monday superseded the previous daily record in September 2023, when 103 Chinese military aircraft were detected operating around Taiwan in a 24-hour span. In response to the latest incursions, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said it employed its own aircraft, navy vessels and coastal missile systems to monitor the activity. Black men have historically voted overwhelmingly for Democratic candidates, with turnout typically lagging that of Black women but consistent nonetheless. Even a relatively small drop in support from Black men for Harris could be significant given the razor-thin margins in battleground states. “Black men prioritize being the primary breadwinners of the household and care about real wages and permanent jobs. The Harris campaign also plans to ramp up its programming specifically designed to engage Black men. This week, it is set to partner with Black male celebrities, influencers and activists to hold “Black Men Huddle Up” events in battleground states, NFL and NCAA watch parties that will double as an avenue for Black men to discuss the stakes of the election.

China’s military exercises around Taiwan, a democracy of 23 million people, have become increasingly frequent in recent years and have tended to coincide with events that have angered Beijing. In August 2022, China launched a week of military drills following a visit to the island by then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Ahead of the drills, the Eastern Theater Command released a propaganda video entitled “prepared for battle” on its social media accounts. The PLA did not say whether the drills involved live fire exercises, and, as of now, China has not launched any missiles. A total of seven Chinese warships plus additional Coast Guard vessels were detected near the Taiwan Strait, according to the ministry.
