Citing "industry challenges," McDonald's on Tuesday announced that it was temporarily serving breakfast until 10.30am instead of midday across Australia. ☆ Google’s greenhouse gas emissions are soaring thanks to AI

AI systems need lots of computers to make them work. The end result has been that Google’s greenhouse gas emissions have soared 48% since 2019, according to the tech giant’s annual environment report. An October study from Dutch researcher Alex de Vries estimated that the “worst-case scenario” suggests Google’s AI systems could eventually consume as much electricity as the country of Ireland each year, assuming a full-scale adoption of AI in their current hardware and software. It added that data center electricity consumption is currently growing faster than it can bring carbon-free electricity sources online. The company has also used AI to suggest more fuel-efficient routes to drivers using Google Maps.

Hargrove is CTO of Ceres Power, a developer of clean energy technology, including electrolysers for green hydrogen. An International Energy Agency report, published in January, highlighted that on average a typical Google search uses 0.3 watt-hours of electricity versus 2.9 watt-hours for a ChatGPT request. Hargrove said if this consumption was not managed properly "then the perverse effect could happen that we use so much more energy."

Some might think that, questions of morality aside, fossil fuel investments are just too good to pass up. Even in the United States, where President Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act is making historic investments in clean energy, oil exports are at an all-time high. On closer examination, the simplest argument against funding new oil, gas and coal projects is not that they’re immoral. A common type of solar panel used in the U.S. is excluded from Section 201 tariffs designed to protect domestic solar manufacturing, and a moratorium on tariffs against solar components imported from several Southeast Asian nations is in place. Biden vetoed legislation last spring that would have imposed tariffs on solar components from Cambodia, Malaysia and Thailand. "What this is doing is it's not allowing these domestic companies to scale," Widmar said. The company has intentionally overbooked to provide a buffer against the volatility in the solar market, he said.
