CNN —Memorial Stadium was the place to be on Wednesday night when the University of Nebraska women’s volleyball team hosted in-state opponent Omaha. The official attendance of 92,003 in Lincoln – at what normally is the university’s football stadium – set the world record for the largest announced crowd at a women’s sporting event, according to the school. “Nebraska has the best fan base in the world, the best volleyball fans in the world,” Albert said before introducing head coach John Cook. “And I was thinking this morning, there’s only three things that shut down the University of Nebraska: 1) snowstorms, 2) Covid, 3) Nebraska volleyball in the stadium. During what the school called “Volleyball Day,” the record-setting crowd gave a roaring ovation to the fourth-ranked Nebraska volleyball team as players walked onto the court.

MUNICH, Germany, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Bundesliga record signing Harry Kane scored twice in his first league appearance in front of a home crowd on Sunday to steer champions Bayern Munich to a 3-1 victory over Augsburg and make it two wins out of two matches. Despite their second straight league win coach Thomas Tuchel was not happy with his team's overall performance, especially after a sluggish first half. Bayern had their opponents on the backfoot from the start but chances were few and far between. Augsburg did manage to cut the deficit in the 86th when they caught the Bayern defence napping and Dion Beljo rounded keeper Sven Ulreich. Bayern are on six points, as many as Union Berlin, Bayer Leverkusen, VfL Wolfsburg and Freiburg.

New signing James Maddison, taking on departed captain Kane's number 10 shirt, pulled the strings in midfield and provided two assists as Spurs took the lead, fell behind and came back for a point with all the goals in a lively first half. Postecoglou, who arrived in July as the replacement for Antonio Conte and is the first Australian to manage in the Premier League, took Romero off immediately after the VAR decision despite the player's obvious reluctance to leave. Bryan Mbeumo equalised 15 minutes later from the penalty spot after Son Heung-Min, taking over from Kane as captain, fouled Mathias Jensen. The South Korean had an otherwise quiet afternoon and was substituted in the second half while striker Richarlison was even less visible. Brentford, who finished ninth last season and one place behind Tottenham, beat Spurs 3-1 in their previous encounter at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium last May, with Kane scoring for the hosts.

Volkswagen closes its Wolfsburg factory for three weeks every summer when workers go on vacation. Unlike the US, it's common in European countries to take a long summer vacation. A Volkswagen factory in Germany shuts down for a three-week summer vacation each year, kicking off the long summer break with a "chorus of trumpets, trombones and drums," Bloomberg reported. It's common for workers in some European countries such as France, Sweden, and Italy, to take a long summer vacation, even for an entire month. Usually for Europeans, peak summer vacation season starts from mid-June, till the end of August.

London/Berlin CNN —Tesla has lodged an application to double the production capacity of its plant near Berlin to 1 million electric vehicles a year. The expansion means the Tesla factory, which delivered its first vehicle in March last year, would overtake Volkswagen (VLKAF)’s sprawling plant in the German city of Wolfsburg, stealing its crown as Europe’s biggest car factory. Anyone objecting to Tesla’s proposal to expand the German factory has until September 18 to do so. Tesla’s biggest factory outside the United States is in Shanghai. In 2022, more than half of the vehicles Tesla delivered were made in China.

Tesla wants to double the production capacity of its assembly plant outside Berlin to one million electric vehicles a year, a move that would make it the largest car plant in Europe at a time when German automakers are struggling to keep pace in the transition to electric vehicles. Since it began production in Grünheide 16 months ago, Tesla has disrupted the German automobile landscape. Over the first half of this year, for the first time, it eclipsed Volkswagen in electric vehicle sales. Volkswagen and other German automakers, including BMW and Mercedes-Benz, have spent years fumbling their attempts to produce electric cars that can compete with Tesla in price and popularity. Across the continent in June, new registrations of electric cars increased more than 66 percent from a year earlier, outselling diesel cars for the first time, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.

Tesla has faced considerable delays to its planned opening date for the plant due to a high number of objections filed by local citizens, mainly over environmental impact and water usage. For the expansion, Tesla has committed to not using any additional water capacity, instead recycling the 1.4 million cubic metres of water it is licensed to use. When up to speed the plant would have a greater output than Volkswagen's Wolfsburg plant, which would trail behind at a capacity of 800,000 vehicles and output of just 400,000 last year. Tesla currently produces around 5,000 cars a week in Grunheide and has not provided a timeline for ramping up output. GRUENHEIDE, Germany, July 18 (Reuters) - Tesla (TSLA.O) on Tuesday sought to assuage Brandenburg state residents' concerns by holding a question-and-answer session on the EV maker's planned expansion that would make its local plant the biggest car factory in the country. Tesla, which currently produces around 5,000 cars a week, hopes to double the plant's production capacity to 1 million vehicles a year and add 50 gigawatt hours of battery production capacity, though it has not provided a timeline. While Volkswagen still holds the highest EV market share in the region, Tesla is making its mark. Tesla has long argued that the plant's impact is relatively low and referred to the benefits of EVs in combating climate change. "Water isn't a Tesla problem - it's a general problem," said 68-year-old local resident Matthias Handschick.

BERLIN, July 18 (Reuters) - Tesla (TSLA.O) is due to hold a question-and-answer session on Tuesday for citizens in the German state of Brandenburg on the ramifications of a planned expansion of its EV and battery plant which would make the site the biggest car plant in the country. The event could help the U.S. carmaker prevent delays to securing the go-ahead from local authorities for the expansion plans similar to those it faced in preparing to open the plant, when numerous citizen objections put it behind schedule. Local environmental groups have expressed several concerns over the electric vehicle (EV) plant from the impact of tree-felling to its water usage. Tesla has long argued the plant's impact is relatively low and pointed to the benefits of EVs in combating climate change. While Volkswagen still holds the highest market share in EVs in the region, Tesla is making its mark.

Swen Pfoertner/Pool via REUTERS/File PhotoSHANGHAI, June 6 (Reuters) - Volkswagen 's Chinese joint venture with SAIC Motor (600104.SS) has transformed one of its plants in Shanghai for production, research and development of electric vehicles (EV), the German automaker said on Tuesday. Production of internal combustion engine models at the main plant of SAIC Volkswagen in Anting of Shanghai will be relocated to other plants, Volkswagen said in an emailed statement to Reuters, which came after comments on social media saying Volkswagen was shutting a plant in Shanghai. The change will not affect the production capacity for individual models, it added. The move underscores Volkswagen's efforts to accelerate its shift to electrification as it has been losing shares in its biggest market where it lags behind Chinese rivals in launching new EV models. Volkswagen-branded cars have been outsold by electrified vehicle maker BYD since November last year, according to data from industrial associations.

CNN —Barcelona Femení overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat Wolfsburg 3-2 in a dramatic Women’s Champions League final and banish its disappointment from last year. The only blemish on Barcelona’s all-conquering record these past few seasons was last year’s Champions League final, as it succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against Lyon, despite otherwise marauding through records and later becoming the first ever football team to win 50 consecutive league games. Saturday’s final against Wolfsburg in Eindhoven, Netherlands was a chance for redemption, but 2-0 down at half time, it seemed that Barcelona would have to wait at least another year to secure a second Women’s Champions League trophy. HAMBURG, May 31 (Reuters) - Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) has introduced extra shifts at its factory in Wolfsburg, the carmaker's biggest, after supply chain disruptions in the wake of the Ukraine war and global chip shortage have eased, a senior executive said. Imelda Labbe, who is part of the management board of the Volkswagen brand, said in an internal interview seen by Reuters that Volkwagen's German plants were significantly better utilised than in 2022. "Our production network in Germany was hit particularly hard by the consequences of the corona pandemic, the global chip crisis and the Ukraine war," Labbe said. This also includes the carmaker's plant in Wolfsburg, where Volkswagen is based, Labbe said, adding that the site could only produce 400,000 car, or half its annual capacity, in 2022. Instead, Volkswagen had to introduce extra shifts from May to meet production targets, Labbe said, adding this has positively impacted delivery schedules, which have come down to around 3 months in Europe for its fully electric ID models.

DORTMUND, Germany, May 7 (Reuters) - Borussia Dortmund demolished hapless VfL Wolfsburg 6-0 on Sunday, with two goals apiece from Karim Adeyemi and Jude Bellingham, to stay hot on the heels of Bundesliga leaders Bayern with three games left in the season. Dortmund are now on 64 points, one behind Bayern, 2-1 winners against Werder Bremen on Saturday. "We are satisfied today but a long way from happy," said Dortmund coach Edin Terzic. Dortmund host Borussia Moenchengladbach next Saturday while Bayern take on Schalke 04. LEVERKUSEN, Germany, May 5 (Reuters) - Bayer Leverkusen slumped to a 2-1 home loss to Cologne on Friday to end their 14-game unbeaten run across all competitions and put their European spot in danger with three Bundesliga matches remaining. Cologne's Davie Selke struck twice in the first half -- either side of Amine Adli's equaliser -- to give them their third straight away win, their longest winning run away from home in 31 years. Selke stunned the hosts in the 14th minute, easily beating defender Jonathan Tah to head in and give Cologne the lead with their first chance of the game. The hosts were in full control of the game when Cologne struck again as Selke stabbed in his second goal of the evening in the 36th minute against the run of play. Bayern Munich, in top spot on 62 points, face Werder Bremen on Saturday.

MUNICH, Germany, May 5 (Reuters) - Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich will be without injured striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and defender Josip Stanisic when they travel with a "decimated squad" to Werder Bremen on Saturday, coach Thomas Tuchel said on the eve of the match. "He is feeling the knee and it causes discomfort," Tuchel said of Choupo-Moting's nagging injury. "He will out for about two weeks but two weeks at this stage are a lot and the number of matches is not increasing. Bayern reclaimed the lead last week with a win over Hertha Berlin as Dortmund slipped up against VfL Bochum with a draw. We have the chance to up the ante now but we cannot allow ourselves any more ups and downs," Tuchel said.
Bayern focused only on Bundesliga, delay board meeting

MUNICH, Germany, May 4 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich want as few distractions as possible as they look to salvage a disappointing season by at least retaining their Bundesliga title, delaying a much-anticipated board meeting until after the end of the season. After a shock German Cup exit with a home loss to Freiburg, Bayern were also eliminated in the Champions League last eight by Manchester City. With four games left and Bayern travelling to 12th placed Werder Bremen on Saturday, the club announced this week it would delay a May 22 board meeting until after the end of the season. "The Bayern Munich board has set a new date of May 30 for its scheduled second quarter board meeting," it said in a statement. Freiburg, in fourth on 56 points, host fifth-placed Leipzig, who have 54, in the battle for Champions League places.
LONDON, May 4 (Reuters) - Arsenal's Austria defender Laura Wienroither is the latest player in the women's game to rupture an anterior cruciate ligament after the club confirmed her injury on Thursday. Wienroither, 24, sustained the injury in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final defeat by Wolfsburg on Monday. She is the fourth Arsenal player to rupture an ACL this season after England captain Leah Williamson, England forward Beth Mead and Netherlands striker Vivianne Miedema. Studies have found women in sports that involve sudden deceleration or changing direction such as soccer are up to six times more likely to suffer an ACL injury than men. The prevalence of injuries in women's soccer in recent times has led to calls for better research.

CNN —Barcelona reached its third straight Women’s Champions League final with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea on Thursday, ensuring the Spanish club advanced 2-1 on aggregate. “In the second half I knew that it was a tense situation but also a dangerous one because one slip from us could have let Chelsea level the tie.
